Chatterbox: Down to Earth

POLITICS THREAD!!!!!!

POLITICS THREAD!!!!!!

This is a place for us to state, debate and discuss politics!  I encourage everyone to do so rationally and maturely, and would ask that all participants would refrain from abuse, even when in the heat of an argument, and that some of the more mature subjects would not be presented here. The Admins wll not publish any inappropriate comments.

However, I would discourage anyone from participating if they are easily offended, or dislike having their views challenged.

This may not be a popular idea, but I wanted to give people a chance to present their views and discuss the larger issues in our world today. I hope that this idea takes, and that it will also be enjoyable and informative! :)

I will begin by introducing a topic that is curently at large in America, but is also, I believe, appropriate for CB. I would ask the Admins to correct me if I am mistaken. :)

So-- what do you all think about the idea of including women in the military draft?

This thread is now closed for new comments.

I'm NOT against all Muslims. I've met one who came to my house and he's friends with my father. I'm only saying the Muslims who DO GO into a special Islam school are raised with terrorist ideas. Cayke, have you ever been discriminated because of your religion in public before? And do you think that that will cause you to become a terrorist? Are you really going to do that? I think not.

My point was that terrorists are NOT Muslims. They call themselves that, but they are not. I would appreciate it if you also did not refer to them as Muslims. And I have never been outright bullied, but I have had some negative experiences. I don't think bullying makes you a terrorist. Mei-xue, I agree with you on most points but I would like to point out that whites aren't the only bullies. Anyone can be a bully. Pearl, terrorists become terrorists because they are raised the wrong way, like you said. They grow up hearing the wrong things, then they act on them when they are old enough. Nevertheless, the fact remains that they are not Muslims and should not be called such.

There are good and bad people in every culture/religion.

There are Christians who aren't really Christian.

There are Muslims who are not Muslims.

There are Jews who are not Jews.

And also, Cayke, I'm curious, if this insults, I beg your pardon, I simply don't know much about Muslims.

So ... what are the beliefs of Muslims?

The beliefs of Christians, in short, is that there is one God, three persons, that Jesus Christ came down from heaven and was born in flesh and blood, that he died on the cross and rose again on the third day. That he will come again on the final day and take all believers into heaven. And we do not know when he is coming back. Only God the Father knows the exact day and hour. I know that there's a lot more I'm leaving out, but that's just a quick tidbit I wanted to say. And I'm working on reading the Bible all the way through myself as of now.

Again, I'm not saying that all Muslims are bad, but there ARE Muslims WHO ARE TAKING IT WAY TOO FAR. I've met some Muslims before and they were really nice. But don't try to pretend that all muslims are good and mistrusted and that there isn't a single bad one.

Regarding debt....Can't view all debt from one lens. Compare gambling debts to student loan debts. The former is money lost with absolutely no positive return (except maybe a lesson learned and then only if you are actually wise enough to see it as such; the latter, on the other hand, is not only an investment on future employment but brings with it knowledge and skills gained that no one can take away from you regardless of employment.  People who start their own business often take on loans that pay for themselves over time as their business grows.  Governments here and abroad spend money on various social programs knowing it is an investment in the future (and also to prevent future disasters). Do you know what led to the water crisis in Flint, Michigan?  It was due to a myopic governor so overly concerned with keeping costs down at the expense of everything else.  And yes, he did keep cost down in the short term but long term...?!  Oh my goodness, I don't even want to get into how much that it is going to cost this country, and I'm not even talking about the money!

Okay, really gone this time. Papers, papers, papers...! I'm not evening going to peek in here anymore.

*coughs*

*waves awkwardly*

Whatever I'm just stalling.

Ahem, so I didn't want to clog up DtE with a rant, so I'll just say it here.

I debated in my mind whether I should do this or not, but I decided to. First, we are not Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump! We are not in a polling booth! This is a small community full of awesome kids (sorry if that sounds babying idk how else to descibe you). We're supposed to be friends. Sure, we can argue and debate some, but why here? We made our case, and if we really want something to change, then we go out and do it in the real world (I have a feeling I messed something up by saying that but whatever).

But here, at least, we can have different opinions, but we have already stated them. Now can't we just be friends at least? On here? It's gone too far.

Or, maybe I'm wrong by arguing about arguing. Hopefully this will be the last speech for this or something.

Basically, what I'm asking is that the politics thread go to the bottom. It's causing misunderstanding, more arguing,

I know there will be contradictions against this, but I won't reply.

Oh dear goodness I'm so bad at this . . .

I didn't want to post on this thread. I really didn't. But I must interject.

I agree with Mei-Xue on the point about whose job it is to help our world. I don't agree with her because I am not religious. Quite the opposite. I am Jewish, and there is a Jewish value called Tikkun Olam. This translates literally to "fixing the world." In other words, this value means that we must fix the world in every little way we can. We. That is why G-d created Adam and Eve: So that someone could have RESPONSIBILITY for this world. The good in the world is shattered like a ceramic bowl and spread far and wide. If we could only try to put the pieces back together again, all the goodness would come together and this world would be lovely. But the only way to do that is to do it ourselves.

However, this is just my opinion. It doesn't mean that it is true.

Pearl:

This is how one of the Boston Bombers got to be so evil. It's because of his childhood, being bullied at school.

Cayke:

Of course not only whites can be prejudiced! Anyone can prejudiced, even without realizing. In the book Iron and Silk, it's about a white guy facing prejudice in China.

Cho: What do you mean by "Christains that aren't Christians"? Do you mean people who broke the Christian rules?

Sure. There are Christians who think that having two baptisms is okay, when in fact it's a big no no in my church.

And in my church, if you participate in Holy communion but don't really believe that it is Jesus Christ's own body and blood, then you are condemming yourself to eternal damnation.

Cho, there are some Christian denominations that allow communicants to believe that communion bread and wine represent (are symbols of) Jesus' body and blood and not the real body and blood.
