POLITICS THREAD!!!!!!

POLITICS THREAD!!!!!!

This is a place for us to state, debate and discuss politics!  I encourage everyone to do so rationally and maturely, and would ask that all participants would refrain from abuse, even when in the heat of an argument, and that some of the more mature subjects would not be presented here. The Admins wll not publish any inappropriate comments.

However, I would discourage anyone from participating if they are easily offended, or dislike having their views challenged.

This may not be a popular idea, but I wanted to give people a chance to present their views and discuss the larger issues in our world today. I hope that this idea takes, and that it will also be enjoyable and informative! :)

I will begin by introducing a topic that is curently at large in America, but is also, I believe, appropriate for CB. I would ask the Admins to correct me if I am mistaken. :)

So-- what do you all think about the idea of including women in the military draft?

This thread is now closed for new comments.

Weird fact: The person who wrote Iron and Silk is my friend's English teacher...

I just realized--Actually, some Asians are illegal immigrants. In nineteen-something, there was a Chinese Exclusion Act law passed where no more Chinese immigrants could come to America, only ones that were related to Chinese people already in America. This was racist, and they still wanted to come, so some pretended to be the sons and daughters of these people and came, illegally. These people were called paper sons and paper daughters. All incoming Chinese immigrants were put on an island called Angel Island, and they tried to screen out the paper sons and daughters. They were illegal. And yet they had every right to be here. They worked their butts off to get by. They gave up their homelands.

But apparently, they should be kicked out, because of the law! Because they had to be imprisoned on that terrible island, hoping not to get caught!

And the only reason the Exclusion Act was lifted was because of an earthquake.

Of course not only whites can be prejudiced! Anyone can prejudiced, even without realizing. In the book Iron and Silk, it's about a white guy facing prejudice in China. People can even say things that are offensive to two races! Like in that Grace Lin book, Grace was teased for being so American. A, that's offensive to Asians, saying that they can't be American. B, that's offensive to Americans, for obvious reasons.

Yes, exactly! What I was also trying to say was that Muslim children are usually bullied because people think they are terrorists, not because they look different. And so that makes Pearl right, because I don't think if you were called a terrorist in your childhood you would actually grow up to be one. So yeah. Topic dropped.

No, anyone who looks different can be bullied. African Americans. Asian Americans. Muslim Americans. Native Americans. Latino Americans. Anyone.

Plus, when he was little, I don't think that they were bullied because of the "Muslims are terrorists" thing. But seriously. If they are USUALLY bullied because they think they are terrorists doesn't mean ALWAYS. USUALLY ≠ ALWAYS.

Which one is your favorite? Mine is Dumpling Days. It's so cool to learn about the Taiwanese culture.

Starry River of the Sky. She wove so many familiar Chinese stories into that one novel, it's crazy! Madame Chang is Chang'E, the Moon Lady. Mr. Shan, Shan actually means mountain in Chinese! There's a Chinese story about a boy who was drowning in a pot and it had to be broken to save him, just like how Rendi's sister saved Rendi! There's more, too, I just can't think right now.

I couldn't find it, but I have a screenshot from the Wall Street Journal website. It's right here:
Thank you, Mei-xue. The Wall Street Journal is certainly a reputable source. I searched and found the whole article. It says that a complaint has been filed against Harvard University based upon research from some independent source. But the article and/or replies to it go on to mention other great schools that do NOT consider race when granting admission to students. It seems that what your comment said is an accusation against Harvard only, not any other schools, and that right now it's still a complaint that's not been ruled upon in a court of law.

Quoting a source out of context can change the intended original meaning. That's why we are so careful about what we post on Chatterbox.
