Sybill's Home~

Here, you'll see a cave with grass and trees growing on its roof. Some roots dangle in front of the entrance. You can see the flickers of a small fire deeper into the cave, and there are voices coming from in the cave.

All around, as far as anyone can see, are woods. It's actually quite pretty. Not to far away from the cave is a small pond that glitters.

Rose~

"My sister, Yin," Sybill says. "She is good at healing. If we can make it to my home, I can get healed. For now, um... I think I have an idea; we can make a sled-type thing." I start a mental list as she rattles off materials. "We need two sturdy branches, lots of vines or rope, those must be strong, and also a... a large boulder, or a hollow log half, or driftwood, anything I could lay on."

"All right. I can get those," I nod.

It doesn't take long, despite the recent wildfire. I keep near the stream and find rowans, shale and vines that don't snap when braided. I wish I knew what the plants were; they might be healing or edible.

The sun begins to set before I'm back, all the same, setting a more peaceful fire in the sky. Sybill examines my plunder and glances west, weighing the imminent darkness.

"Okay. Tie the branches to the boulder with some vines so it looks like a sled." She waits for me before continuing. "Now tie vines to the branches so you have rope to pull the sled with."

The result isn't pretty, but Sybill seems to think it's sufficient, as she drags herself onto it.

"Now, follow my directions and we're sure to reach my family's home," she says.

"All right," I assent. I slip on my pack and take up the sled ropes. "Where to?"

I walk for hours, Sybill calling out directions every now and then. The sky is clear, the moon bright, but the way is still difficult. Once, going through a particularly thick patch of trees, the vines holding the sled together snapped. I couldn't repair it in the darkness, so I carried the whole mess--including Sybill--on to the nearest clearing, whereupon I broke the slate. We settled on lashing pine branches to the rowan in its place. An hour before dawn, we came to a pond.

"Turn right here," Sybill calls. "And go slowly, because my family's home is nearby."

"Noted."

I amble on for a while, half-asleep on my feet.

"Stop here. Rose. Rose, stop. Rose!"

"What--oh. Apologies. I may be in need of sleep."

"Yeah, me too," Sybill agrees. "We're here, so maybe now we can. Pull me to the cave, the one with the vines on it."

I follow her instructions and sit down while Sybill calls out into the sheltered opening. The sky is beginning to lighten. It's quiet, and I close my eyes for a moment.

~Rose is probably going to fall asleep. It's not easy to stay awake for twenty-four hours straight, even less so when you're walking for most of that time.

Sybill ~

I call out.

No answer.

I open my jaws to call out again, but this time there is a reply.

"Sybill?"

Yin!

"Yin, it's me."

Yin carefully steps out of the cave, her milky blind eyes staring blankly into the distance. She carefully reaches out with a paw, and moves it across my entire body. I since when feels my burns and scars.

"Its you."

A silent tear slides down Yin's  face. Her fur is darker than mine, but I can still  see her shilleouted against the night sky.

"I have a friend. Her name is Rose. She is human."

I turn around and see that Rose has fallen asleep. That's not surprising.

Yin nods.

"I scent her."

Yin nudges me inside.

"Rest." She says.

And I do.

Rose~

I wake in the mouth of a cave. There is darkness to my right, a verdant brightness to my left. For a moment, I haven't any idea where I am.

Then I remember; night falling over charred forest, Sybill instructing me on how to make a sled, and seemingly endless walking. This is her home, I think, with her family.

I stir, stretch, step outside. It is well forested here, trees of all ages growing everywhere I look. The light shafting through them looks to be that of late morning or midday. A bird trills nearby, and another further off answers. I wonder where Sybill is.

~I was a little surprised about the paw thing. I guess I assumed that Yin would use her nose instead, that being more touch-sensitive and such, but it's your choice.

Sybill? Are you here? This isn't like you...

Ah, sorry!

I've been very busy lately, but I should been on more often now!

Sybill ~

My eyes blink open.

It takes me a moment to fully wake up, but when I do the first thing I do is look for Rose. Just by glancing around I can tell she isn't inside. I look at myself, and see that Yin has bandaged my scarred leg with some strange yet sturdy vine thing.

I stumble to my feet with a cough. Every time I step a tiny flare of pain goes of in my ribs, but its tolerable.

Just outside the den is Rose. She is sitting on a sun warmed bouoder, watching a  bird hop around.

It appears to be a Thunderbird in rough shape.

"Hello," I rasp.

Ah, there you are. *relieved*

Rose~

Something moves in my pocket. For a moment I haven't a clue what it could be, but then the thunderbird messenger peeks out and chirps. I relax.

"Little one, you frightened me," I smile. My words sound low and heavy, and using them reminds me of how much smoke I inhaled yesterday. My throat confirms this. The bird chirps again and moves to get out. I offer it my hand and lift it out. It flits down to the ground and begins looking for food. I find a slab of stone in a nearby sunbeam and watch.

I see Sybill emerge in the corner of my eye.

"Hello." Her voice is no better than mine, grating and thick.

"Good morning." I think of Lilly, coming in to breakfast with sleep still in her eyes. "How fare your ribs?"

~Mexi says miff! Are you miffed about something, Mexi?
