I wasn’t really sure what to call this thread, but I’ve had this idea floating around in my head for awhile now. Basically, anyone can post anything here. It's not plagiarism to name something after somebody. I have an orchid named Einstein (because it's overgrown roots kinda look like his hair). That's not plagiarizing Albert Einstein. And even if I were naming it after something from a copyrightable work, it's still not plagiarism; it's just being a fan. Now if I were to name all the characters in my story after all the characters in somebody else's book, and claim that I had come up with the names, especially if they were unique names, that could be borderline plagiarism. But just naming a pet or an item (or an avocado tree) after something isn't plagiarism.
As it so happens, I think I might name it after the Avogrado guy, because it would fit my trend of naming my plants after scientists.
