Short story ideas?

As part of my english course, I have to write a short story. My english course gave me no ideas as to how to write this short story or what I should start with--it's more of just focused on making sure my story is grammatically correct. Yay! 

I have no idea where to start on this or how to even write a short story, or even what the length of a usual short story should be. Does anyone have experience with this?

So, I know I already have a picturings thread, but it's basically dead, so I'm starting a new thread specifically dedicated to drawing you guys' OCs! They can be from stories, RPs, solo writes, etc. One thing though-- if you want me to draw an Æ, Captcha, or CBer, then please request a picturing on  my other picturings thread. The reason this is on Inkwell is because it's for characters from stories or RPs. Thanks!

I brush my fingertips against my gun. It's a bad habit, I know. I'm still not used to the extra load on my hip. It's been a couple of weeks, but the weight drags me down. It's supposed to be thirty-eight ounces, but there's a lot of weight that number doesn't account for.

i just wondered if anyone on here had heard of the magazine StoneSoup? Or submitted something to it? I'm thinking of sending in artwork or something... (most of my stories would be waaaay too long)......
