Writing/Art Contest
There have been things like this in the past, and I decided to bring it back.
So, you will team up with a partner. Each pair will have one writer and one artist. The judge will give you a theme and a deadline. The writer will write a story or a poem (maximum 100 words) relating to the theme, and the artist will make a piece of art relating to the theme. It's nice if they go together, but they don't have to.
At the deadline, the judge will judge the entries. The winners will become the next judge.
The first theme is growing. You could try something about plants, or children, or science, or something else entirely.
The deadline is two and a half weeks from now, September 9. I know people's schools are starting, and you'll need to find your partners, so I can extend the deadline if needed.
Good luck, and have fun!

Just a reminder: This thread exists! Please submit your work before the deadline. I don't want to give extensions.

Don't worry, we're still doing this! I haven't been able to get ahold of Blue though, so. . .

Do your best, and hopefully all will be well. Thanks for the update!

Yeah, THIS THREAD EXISTS!

So what do you want to do for this prompt? I think that having marmalade symbolize something more than food would be a good idea. I think maybe that we could write/draw about two friends doing something that has something to do with marmalade. What do you think?

Hi! Sorry I was offline for a while. Yeah, I think it would be kind of cool if marmalade means something to people because of their relationship. A couple (undeveloped/changeable) ideas:
1. Two childhood friends used to play with it: maybe they had a marmalade stand instead of a lemonade stand, or they found it in the pantry one day and decided/believed it was the food of fairies. Then maybe they meet as they are older, grown and changed, but they can still bond and laugh over marmalade.
2. A poor boy from a poor family has never tried marmalade before and when he does he learns to share it with others...? Its color reminds me of gold.
3. A teacher uses the sweetness of marmalade to capture her young students' attention and teach them something. A spoonful of sugar kind of thing.
4. Someone hates marmalade but they eat it for their mother's sake
Okay actually, there are a lot of potential ideas for this but I'm not sure if they have as much depth. Whaddaya think?
Rushing off to write my Beowulf-style poem for school but eagerly awaiting your response,
Brown Bear

i like the first one. Maybe we could do the one with the favorites, it seems like the most fun to me.
(February 26, 2018 - 8:43 pm)
Okay! I'll try to write a short story based on that... and I think you could get started on the drawing if you want. If they don't go together perfectly, I can edit the writing.

Ok!

FLIP!!!!!! I can't create someting this time! I'm SO SORRY! I'm going to be in Japan for a week and a half so I can't post anything!
(March 6, 2018 - 11:40 am)
Well, it's two days past the deadline and nobody's posted their submissions. So, by default,
NOBODY WINS.
MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA!
XD Yeah, no, I don't know. I still don't want to give extensions, but if September still can't contact Bluebird and Lucy isn't available... Perhaps we should set the match between writers? Kitten, everyone, what do you think?

(who is sorry for the delay)
mama's recipe
step 1: orange stained t-shirts, licking the juice of our fingers. it was awfully unsanitary, but we never cared: heat kills the germs; mama always told us that. old pans rusted after years of disinfectant soap, orange syrup soaking in sugar water
step 2: cranking up that old gas stove, always careful since we singed the tips of your hair, but you keep it short now, you hacked off 13 inches with a steak knife when you were 14. mama hid the knives after that
step 3: sweet hot oranges simmering over the heat on 80 degree summer days— I was never tall enough to stir the fruit though I always wanted to. you would always tease me and I pretended I never noticed
step 4: shaking hands as you poured the mixture through a sieve: you closed your eyes as I held it still. somehow your aim was on point; we’ve never burned my hands, not even when we were little
step 5: there were never enough jars, so we used the cracked ones though they never kept as long and we always remembered to eat them first. we still stumble upon old jars when we clean out the house; the faint smell of marmalade still lingers when we’re home

I love the story, both the plot and the way it unravels, the sweetness and the little details, the realness of the characters... And Blue, it's nice to see you stepping out of your usual medium and showing us you're also good with other materials, and I love how you put the last line of September's piece on the marmalade jar.
You two win by default, as Lucy and Brown Bear haven't submitted anything and I'm not about to offer more time, but you also win because you deserve it. But let's all try to be on time next round, shall we?
