Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

Poetry Contest

Poetry Contest

Well, we haven't had one of these in a while, have we? Time for a new one, I say! Welcome, resident poets!

The rules are pretty simple. I am the first judge. I will give you a theme, and you must write a poem relating to the theme. Be creative with your interpretations! I will then judge the entries by a set date, and the winner will then be the next judge, and set the next theme. And so on, and so forth.

The first theme will be... *dramatic drumroll*

Stars! Whether you chose to write about the kind of stars you wish on, or the kind that take the stage, I will be eagerly awaiting your sparkly, shiny, beautiful poems. Have them in by... Saturday, March 18. Two weeks. Sound fair?

I hope to see your poems soon!

I had such a hard time picking a new theme that I decided to go with two, if that's okay with everyone. You can choose one to write your poem or combine them!

1) Love. Strong love, one-sided love, forbidden love...or it can be un-romantic love--you can write about things you love, places you love, people you love like family....

2) Art. Anything even remotely involving art. Artists, art history, your art, other people's art, modern art, etc.

Agh! I forgot to put the deadline in, too! What a hypocrite I am....

Let's say the deadline is November 30th.

I shall try to join this beauty. But poetry is failing me. Give me some time.

By the way, your themes fit perfectly into my poet mood lately. Thank you!

I did mine on Love!

Broken Hearts

Shattered pieces

The color of candy hearts

Stamped with the words "I Love You,"

In red edible ink

A mallet rests next to the chunks

Harder than steel;

Sharper than a knife.

Dusted with powder

Red, pink, white, and orange.

Used to crush

A heart as clear

Fragile

Weak

As glass.

A hand grabs the shards

With a sewing needle

And steel thread.

The hands stitch the heart back together

In hopes

That we can love again

After the end of this.

I wrote this prior to the contest, but it fits, so I hope that will be okay..

a love letter to a friend that hates me

——

she wants to disappear,

to wink out like a distant star,

slow and fading,

become a tiny spot on the horizon, a

half-forgotten, half-noticed

spot, a radio blip, a

silence.

she wants to be gone but

doesn’t want to be worried about.

wants it to be that

for all you know she’s in colorado,

safe and happy and coming

back next year,

except she wants to go somewhere much farther than

the centennial state

and never come back.

she’s perfect perfect perfect,

but not good enough—

not for herself, not for you,

not for anyone.

she lies in bed at night with tears not-quite-dried

and decides that her life goal

is to be half of what

they think of her.

drying out ballpoint pens in

color order, a

purple notebook, a styrofoam bird,

a dented water bottle, countless soccer

team photos,

old ballet slippers—

small things, pointless things,

and yet they are her world.

screw everything else

she wants and ever wanted!

she just needs you back, needs her friend again.

you don’t need her.

she’s replaceable, finite,

and you’re surrounded

by a million other people,

better people, better other better other and

not her.

she might disappear someday.

recede into her thoughts far enough that she

can’t come out,

become a scared turtle and retreat into

easy things, easy people. you are her

biggest problem but also the

best solution.

you are difficult, but you are worth it,

worth the time, worth the pain— all of it.

for you, she won’t let herself disappear.

she loves you.

The Cloud Around Me

Brushes flying

Paint splatting

Glitter and oil and feathers float like a cloud around me.

Heart soaring

Mind free

As I forget about the stormcloud hanging over me.

People jeering

Mocking laughter

Have no place in this cloud of calm.

Me tripping

Cameras flashing

Cannot penetrate my cloud of creativity.

And yet, and yet,

even I,

cannot paint away the day.

I can extend the deadline if anyone needs me to.

But also, you might have to find a different judge for this round because I might be prejudiced on account of Abi's poem.

Prejudiced in what way?

submitted by Abigail S., age 13, Nose in a Book

Because of a possible interpretation of its meaning, which is a subject I don't hold with.

Oh, I understand. It was intended to mostly be about friendship-love, but I get how it could be interpreted differently. If you really feel like you won't be able to judge fairly, then you can appoint someone else, but I honestly don't care if I win or lose or what.

This is soooo beautiful. Ahhh, how can you write something so deep and heartbreaking in 13 words?! I'm in awe.
