Sybill's Home~

Here, you'll see a cave with grass and trees growing on its roof. Some roots dangle in front of the entrance. You can see the flickers of a small fire deeper into the cave, and there are voices coming from in the cave.

All around, as far as anyone can see, are woods. It's actually quite pretty. Not to far away from the cave is a small pond that glitters.

All right, great!

Sorry for not being on. I'm in Scotland, but that hasn't been for two weeks... *shakes head* Yell at me if I do this again.

And I just saw that you're not here. For when you get back, then.

Rose~

We decide that the best way to travel is with me carrying her over my shoulders, in the fireman's carry. I have practiced it with Lilly, ages ago, although Sybill is different. We practice, too, over the next few days. I figure out how often to rest and how to adjust my pack. Sybill figures out ways to duck branches I miss and keep a lookout for us.

On the sixteenth day, I can hold off no longer. Sybill makes this clear at breakfast.

"My burns are healed."

"Mhm."

"It's getting colder. Last night it was almost freezing."

"We have blankets for our journey."

"We also have meat, water, bandages, herbs, flint and tinder, all your weapons..."

"I understand."

"So can we go, then? It's been, like, a month!"

"It has been approximately nineteen days since you broke your ribs."

"Yeah, and they're better now."

"You still take great care when you breathe."

"Well, I don't need to!"

"I would recommend continuing it."

"That's not the point."

"I know." I sigh, look up. "It looks like there will be sun today."

"Perfect weather for traveling."

"We shall see."

Sybill gives me a look. I give her a look back. We leave as soon as she finishes her rabbit.

Sybill~

On the sixteenth day, I am ready. I decide to break this news to Rose first thing in the morning.

"My burns are healed."

" Mhm, " She replies.

"It's getting colder. Last night it was almost freezing," I continue.

" we have blankets for our journey, " Rose replies.

"And we also have meat, water, bandages, herbs, flint and tinder, all your weapons..."

" I understand, " Rose says.

"So, can we go then? It's been, like, a month!" Excitement creeps into my voice .

"It has been approximately nineteen days since you broke your ribs." Rose betrays no emotion , but I have learned from practicing with her that she, too, wants to leave this place with it's dreadful memories behind.

"Yeah, and they're better now."

" You still take care when you breathe. "

"Well, I don't need to!" I exclaim .

"I would recommend continuing it."

" that's not the point. "

"I know." Rose sighs. " It looks there will be sun today. "

"Perfect weather for traveling," I reply.

" we shall see. "

I give her a look, and she returns it.

We leave shortly after I finish my rabbit. Rose carries me in the fireman's carry or whatever she calls it. I keep lookout, but as far as I can see there is nothing.

The morning goes by peacefully, and it does seem to be sunny that day. Suddenly something colorful attracts my attention.

"Rose, wait up. I think I see a...poster?"

" A what? "

"A poster. On a tree."

"A poster on a tree," she drawls .

"Really! It's really there!"

" Mhm. "

"Rose!"

she sighs.

"Can't we please look at it?" I plead.

" Fine. Where is it? "

"To the left."

Rose turns and we walk closer.

"Huh, there really is a poster nailed to a tree," She says.

"Told you so," I say, " And look! It says the Flea Market is in Mer! We're going to Mer! "

"Sybill, read the bold print in the bottom right corner," she suddenly says.

" Huh? Wh--" I stop as my eyes scan over it.

"They're selling the Power of Hoof? How is that even legal?" I ask.

" It's probably a hoax, " Rose says.

"Yeah, but why would somebody go to such lengths to get there hands on a fake Power? What's their reasoning?"

I keep not coming back... But I promised to finish this.

Rose~

We travel peacefully for a while. Early afternoon, Sybill calls out from my shoulders.

"Rose, wait up. I think I see a... poster?"

"A what?"

"A poster. On a tree," she specifies.

"A poster on a tree," I repeat doubtfully.

"Really! It's really there!"

I believe her. "Mhm," I reply.

"Rose!" she complains. I sigh. I don't think it's worth stopping for, but if she really wants to...

"Can't we please look at it?" she persists.

"Fine. Where is it?" I give in.

"To the left," she directs eagerly.

I spot it quickly, and turn off the path.

"Huh."

"Told you so," Sybill says. "And look! It says the flea market is in Mer! We're going to Mer!"

I'm half-listening to her when something catches my eye.

"Sybill, read the bold print in the bottom right corner," I interrupt.

"Huh? Wh--They're selling the Power of Hoof? How is that even legal?"

"It's probably a hoax," I tell her. I don't remember there being any laws about selling a Power at all.

"Yeah, but why would anybody go to such lengths to get a fake Power? What's their reasoning?"

I look over at her. "The seller doesn't have to go to any lengths at all, unless they want to make it convincing, which they would if they thought they could trick someone into believing it. Into buying it. For an enormous sum of money, of course. The buyer would believe they'd gotten their hands on a Power. And to own a Power makes you..." I look away, trying to find the right words. "It gives you the ability to do very nearly anything you want."

Sybill is quiet for a moment. Finally, she says, "We have to find out if this is real."

I nod and turn back towards the path. "I imagine we will not be alone in that goal."

Sybill ~

"I imagine we will not be alone in that goal," Rose states , turning back to the path.

Fantasies buzz in my head of what might happed there.

"I'm excited! I wonder who will be there. Do you think Catastrophe will be there? Oo, what if there's royalty there? Wouldn't that be sooo cool?"

My rambling lasts for another hour or two. Rose never said anything, althougj it would have been hard to, seeing how fast I was talking. She probably was having trouble just figuring out what I was saying!

It is late afternoon when we take our first rest. We each eat a small amount of food. Neither of us are very hungry.

And then I notice a peculiar scent, and I hear rustling. Rose must have heard it as well, because she gives me a look and rests her fingers on her knife, a precaution for it things go awry.

I am on full alert now, eyes darting every direction and ears straining to pinpoint the exact location of the rustling. Whatever it is, it smells like lemons. The scent is so strong even Rose can probably smell it...

~~~
I was running out of ideas, and this was the first thing that came into my head.
Rose~
"I'm excited!" Sybill bubbles. "I wonder who will be there. Do you think Catastrophe will be there? Ooh, what if there's royalty..."
She goes on like this for quite a while. Her speculation makes the travel go faster, although sometimes if I miss one word I'm lost for the next ten minutes.
During our first rest we have just finished eating when a bush near us begins to rustle the way bushes do when something is in them. I grasp the hilt of my dagger and share a look with Sybill, who is sitting alert. A faint smell of lemons rises.
The rustling stops, but I do not relax. This goes well, as the next moment, a fox leaps out and lands in front of us, wearing a bandolier hung with pouches and brandishing a dirk that has been poorly fitted to its paw.
"Yaaah! Give me all your money, or I'll cut you to smithereens and take it!"
A jay steps out after the fox and rather sardonically asks, "Isn't it supposed to be 'I'll cut you to ribbons'?"
I sigh and take a subtle stance. "Everywhere we go..."
~The fox and the jay are highway robbers, in case it wasn't clear, but they're not very good at it. The jay might be trouble if it takes up dive-bombing our duo, but that might take some provocation.
Sybill ~
"Yaah! Give me all your money or I'll cut you to smithereens and take it!" The fox yells, leaping out of the bush. I think he was aiming for being frightening , but it's rather amusing instead.
just like Ciaran...
I clear my head with a subtle shake. A jay emerges, and with an irritated expression on his face, asks, "Isn't it supposed to be 'I'll cut you ribbons?'"
The fox shoots him a poorly concealed glare . I don't think Rose and I were supposed to see it, but obviously this  fox isn't the most experienced.
Rose sighs and mutters, "Everywhere we go..."
The fox turns his attention back to us. "So, what's it going to be? Hand over the coins or...would you rather I used force?"
His tone, which was likely supposed to be scary, is really more of a squeak.
I laugh .
"Oh my. You really do need some advice on 'highway-robbery'." I giggle, and Rose gives me a look.
The fox looks offended , as does the jay, but only for a second. He molds his face in what is supposed to be scary, but it looks rather amusing instead.
Suddenly, I laugh harder, and harder. I begin rolling on the ground, an my laughter changes.
It sound's like Ma'ind's laughter. when she laughed at me, before she was a monster. When she first took me to the cliff.
it is cold, harsh, and above all, cruel as laughter can get.
"It is funny, sometimes, to see how history repeats itself." I am lost in another bout of laughter as the Fox finally lunges.
I thought Sybill was due to display her insanity once more....
Rose~
"So what's it going to be?" the fox demands squeakily. "Hand over the coins! Or would you rather I used force?"
Sybill laughs. "Oh my, you really do need some advice on highway robbery!"
I shoot her a look. The fox looks insulted. Sybill continues to laugh. It grows harsh, suddenly dark and humorless.
"It's funny, sometimes, to see how history repeats itself. Hahahahahaha!"
The fox lunges for her, but I swat it aside easily, hardly even moving. The jay flutters for a moment, startled. The fox reels slightly and recovers.
"I'll make you regret that!"
Its attack is focused on me this time, and the jay flaps forward to run interference. I make a quick calculation and lash out in two directions at once. Both hits connect, although the fox is worse off. The jay flees anyway, and I knock the fox unconscious with a third and final blow.
Sybill is still laughing. I lay a hand gently but firmly on her shoulder.
"Sybill."
She scales it down to maniacal giggles and soon stops. "Yes?"
I hadn't planned for that, but I improvise. "What shall we do with him?" I gesture towards the fox.
"Oh," she ponders. "I don't know." Her voice is a childish sing-song, though not quite innocent.
"Hmm." I consider for a moment. "We could kill him."
Sybill~
"Hmm," Rose pauses, " We could kill him. "
"Hmm. It does seem sensible, right? I mean, nobody else will have to be annoyed by him then." I say.
we both sit in silence for a moment.
"Well, who care? Let's just do it," I say. Rose nods. She slits his throat as quietly as possible , and we hide the body under a bush.
Rose puts me back on our shoulders, and we are off. It doesn't surprise me one bit that I no longer care that we've just killed someone. After alk, that's what we did to Ma'ind, and the spider spirits. So why stop there?
I hum to myself, at peace.
... I be disturbed... Remind me again what set Sybill off on the road to insanity? Wasn't it when Yin died? Also, what happened to Lily? Last we saw her, I think she was grappeling with another ghost, but then we never knew what Death did to her.
Ah. It started on another thread, Rp's Cafe! There was this insane lizard guyq, Ciaranq, who started a fire and almost killed Sybill and Rose. Sybill was trapped under a tree and broke her ribs there. And then, yes, her sister Yin was killed. And then there was the whole spider-spirit thing, and Ma'ind, and then this.
Yep! They're all set on the trail to insanity-provoked villainy, which will hopefully enable them to create conflict in the story and inspire more plot, thereby aiding Kyngdom as a whole.
Mexi says ohpb. Oh, PB? PB as in peanut butter or Princess Bubblegum?
Oh, whoa. Okay. I wasn't actually expecting Sybill to be so open to that. It works, though, and it helps move them onward to villainy...
Rose~
"Hm," Sybill considers. "It does seem sensible, right? I mean, nobody else will have to be annoyed by him then."
I think about it. He might come after us again, in vengeance. Restraining him temporarily wouldn't do any good if being knocked out didn't discourage him, and crippling him one way or another wouldn't necessarily be a safe solution either.
"Well, who cares? Let's just do it," Sybill prompts, and I nod in agreement. I slit his throat quickly and easily; not a bad way to go for a highway robber. Sybill points out a bush to put him under, and soon we continue on our way, though not before I inspect the contents of his bandolier. There is a collection of coins, flint and tinder, a bit of food, odds and ends. Nothing to suggest attachment to any organization. I take only the greater part of the money. We will need it more than him.
I think about the last time I killed something. A hare, in the woods near the caves. It had not been quite as easy as this; it noticed my arrow just before it hit and moved so that I needed a second shot, and its cries likely scared off everything within range of hearing. However, I had known we would be leaving soon, and its meat was only an addition to our supply. What a different reason for its death...
Another memory flits unbidden through my mind. The killer of my sister, lying prone beneath my hands on the damp night grass, bleeding. Yet another different reason.
"Sybill," I say.
"Hm?"
"Keep an eye out for the jay."
"You think it'll come bacK?"
"I do not know."
"We'll be fine. It's probably long gone, and if not, we can take one jay."
"I hope you are correct."
We take turns keeping watch that night, but the jay does not return. Dreams, however, do.
"Karune..."
Lilly's pale, spectral form cowers in the trees.
"Karune, I'm scared..."
"It's okay," I tell her. "I'll protect you."
"Karune, he cheated," she says. "You have to be really strong..."
"I am," I assure her. "But I'll get even stronger if it makes you happy."
"Thank you..."
I am left holding thin air.
~I had the idea that Rose's hallucinations of Lilly will start to embody her paranoia and make her think that she needs every advantage she can get to be able to protect those she cares about, prompting her to be extremely critical and rise to power in her quest for strength. She might occasionally be reckless out of fear, but out of that same fear she will also weasel out every flaw and threat possible and eliminate them. She will also use fear to control those she commands and justify everything she wants to do with the desire for safety, which is actually almost reasonable, except that she's going to do incredibly ridiculous and paranoid things.
Sybill~
Morning comes, as morning always does. Rose gently awakened me. She'd been taking the final watcg. I stand up, and Rose rests me on her shoulders again.
"When do you think we'ok reach Mer?" I ask.
Rose shrugs softky. "I'm not sure, but likely somewhere around a day or two."
" Ah. " I'm feeling impatient, and I just want to get there. I can't wait to see all the people and the booths and the wares.
"Are you excited?" I ask Rose.
