Rose~

"So, what's next?" Sybill croaks. Her voice sounds terrible, hoarse and ragged.

"Sybill, look at yourself!" I exclaim. She's not fit for any strenuous undertakings. Her fur is charred and she has several burns, but most important is a dark gash running all the way across her leg. A thin string of blood spools away from it in the water. She directs her attention to it for a moment.

"I'll be fine," she says. I decide not to argue.

"We still need to stop this fire." The air catches in my throat, and I try to avoid breathing too deeply. Sybill coughs.

"The smoke is the worst. We've got to inhale as little as possible. It's impossible not to breathe in some smoke, but if we stay away from the worst areas we can inhale less." She pauses to cough again. "If we locate Ciaran's band and put it on him, that would keep him from making the fire grow. Then we could stop it."

"We still need to cross through most of the fire to reach Ciaran," I remind her.

"So we can forge a path. Like avoiding the fire to get to Ciaran, then using the water to stop the fire," she counters.

"I'll do it alone," I declare.

"No," Sybill holds.

"You can't come with your injuries!"

"I have to go. I'm more agile, and I'm quicker." A cloud of smoke blows over us, and for a moment we only cough.

"Not injured, you aren't," I assert.

"Well, fine. I can find out how far the fire extends while you find Ciaran's band. Once you do, come back and I'll meet you here. But don't go to Ciaran alone. If I'm trapped or hurt, I'll howl to warn you."

Not the best plan, I'm certain, but Sybill wouldn't agree to a lesser role. It'll be advantageous to have an ally when facing Ciaran, anyway, albeit a wounded one. I nod and stand up, dripping wet.

"I'll see you again soon."

"Right," Sybill says, rising herself. We step onto opposite banks and re-enter the inferno, I the way we came and she away from the worst.

I'm grateful for being soaked. Every way is another flame, and the water is a suit of armor repelling all. Each step hisses, steam battling smoke. My eyes still stream and I can't help coughing, but it's better than before.

Walking is too slow. I increase my pace to a loping jog, try to step on stone and soil instead of burning plants and leaves. It's not too long before I find the spot where we three met. The bushes Ciaran hid in are half gone, branches still arching over piles of ash and cinders.

And there's the band. I squeeze out my hair over it, and it lets up a puff of steam. It's so hot here. An oven. I wonder how much of my water armor is sweat.

I try to drip as much as I can on the bad before gingerly picking it up. It's hot, but not as hot as I expected. I cough. I've been coughing a lot. My chest is beginning to hurt, an aching fire to mirror the blaze around me.

"Well, well, well, look who came crawling back."

I turn. Ciaran stands not far away. He's behind some more bushes, but they've burned away enough for it to be ineffective cover.

"Rosie-Posy, liar and a thief."

I have a few words I wouldn't mind directing to him, but my throat reminds me to spare my voice, and I ignore him. Instead, I run.

"And the Big Bad Wolfie is too scared to show. Or did you kill her off? Just like you tried to kill me!"

I think he's lunged. I don't bother to look back. This accursed conflagration threatens to trap me, but I trace my trail and dodge its attacks.

"Run run run, but you can't hide!" Don't respond. Don't look back. Oh Claaws, this heat.

The stream. The wall of fire and then the stream. Not far now. Not far.

"I'll get you, Rosie!"

I enter the barrier of flame. Follow the trail, avoid that branch, duck, duck, jump. The smoke is so thick here. I stumble. Is it longer than before? I can't breathe.

There! There, up ahead. The stream. Ciaran hisses--it sounds almost like a laugh--and there's my pack, and I splash into the water, fresh, free water, I'm safe in the water! Foolish lizard. He bursts out of the fire and is met by my retaliation.

And he shrieks.

~Sorry, I'm tired. That last part might be somewhat incoherent. This is long...

Sybill~

I walk away from the stream. The water on my fur drips onto the ground, sending up tiny wisps of steam.

The fire is hot, but not as hot as where Rose is. It's easy to skirt around the patches of fire, and as I notice the sun going down, I hear something.

It was a shriek.

I look around wildly. Who was it? Ciaran? Rose? Someone in the cafe?

Has the cafe even been harmed by the fire? I race towards where I think the stream is. If it's because of the fire, the stream would be the safest place.

I run, but a burning tree collapsed in front of me. I realize I'm trapped by walls of flames. I close my eyes.

And then...I leap.

I hit the ground and howl in pain.

I don't notice the other falling tree...

Until it hits me.

Just after I finish another howl...

Everything goes black.

Nice! I hope we get to see it soon. I made something a while back and forgot to post it, so here it is now:

Wow, Sybill is really taking a beating. Don't go too far, now.

Rose~

Ciaran recoils. I attack again, streamwater my weapon. He hisses, flees. I intend to watch him go, but just then I hear Sybill howl.

"Sybill!" I shout. She isn't far away; that howl was too loud, and it hasn't been long enough. I leap out of the stream and run towards the sound. There comes a shuddering crash of wood, and another long howl, and there it is, the fallen tree, and under it a wolf.

And suddenly I'm back in the ballroom. I'm talking to some dimwit in a suit, interrupted by a deafening explosion, by the sound of a wall's collapse. I am running, tripping over my stupid dress. I am holding my sister as she dies. Lilly is dead. She is dead and we are at a ball and we are in the burning woods and she is under a wall and she is under a tree and I lift up the wall that is also a tree and she is dead and alive and a wolf--

"Rose?"

I have carried Sybill to the stream. I think she broke some ribs. I'm not an expert in healing or wolf anatomy, but I know what it feels like to break bones. My own and others' both.

"Yes?" I answer Sybill.

"You looked a little distant."

I was thinking about Lilly. Sybill was under the tree, and Lilly was under the broken pieces of a wall. They were both trapped and injured, and I had felt the sweeping rush of terror rise again. This time I had saved her, but there is no sense of closure. Sybill is not Lilly, and Lilly is still dead.

"Ah. Yes. Don't worry about it." I mustn't get distracted. I have more pressing matters to attend to right now.

~You might be wondering why I won't let Rose regain total peace of mind. It's because I've been planning to let her deteriorate into paranoia and become a villain, actively working against the Resistance and stirring up trouble, in part because every story needs conflict to stay alive, and in part because it's surprisingly fun to write. She isn't there yet, though, and for now she'll do her best to get Ciaran's band back on and put the fire out.

Sybill~

Rose isn't the same. She looks...distant. She claims she's fine.

I know she's not.

"Rose. I can't not worry about." I say softly.

I look up at her.

She blinks.

"Lets not talk about," I whisper. The ghost of a smile appears on her face, but it disappears  in a flash.

I fall asleep eventually. My dreams are full of memories.

It's dark and stormy outside. But inside the cave, there is a fire. And family. It's happy. Rabbits are roasting, and Mother is singing with a beautiful howl. She's telling an old story that she most likely made up, and her howl blossoms like a flower in the night. Father is resting. I'm listening to every word of Mother's story. It's about a forest fire...and of course, her.

Mother's forest fire story! That should calm Rose.

And so I begin to howl, the song blossoming like a flower in the night...

"The fire was raging...Through the woods........"

~Sorry my part was a little weird.

Rose~

"Rose. I can't not worry about it." Sybill looks up at me. I'm not sure how to respond.

"Let's not talk about it," she sighs. The corners of my mouth rise, briefly.

"All right."

I leave her resting in the stream, body submerged, head safely above the water. I take the band with me. I will do this alone. There is no longer any question.

I run through the burning woods. The heat is less of a problem than the smoke, which is starting to make my chest hurt. I'm going to do this quickly. Fight the dragon, alert the town, put out the fire, ensure Sybill's safety, and go on. And there he is, coming up to meet me.

"Rosie-posy 'fraidy cat, ran away but now she's back," Ciaran chants in a sing-song voice.

"I'm not afraid of you, Ciaran," I say in as matter-of-fact of a tone I can with all the smoke.

"Really? Then why'd you go to the stream?" He spits the last word.

"Tactical retreat. But I'm not here to argue with you." I adopt my stance.

"So you wanna kill me," Ciaran snarls. "Won't work. You tried."

I don't bother to grace the statement with a reply. Instead, I attack.

Ciaran dodges. I expected that, and respond with a roll and a second strike. This time Ciaran counters it with a not inconsiderable amount of fire, but now I'm close enough. I take his legs out from under him, provoking a grunt, and slap the band down on his back, both pinning him and rendering him harmless.

The raging wildfire around us immediately quiets to a demure crackle, and Ciaran begins again to weep. I roll the band down to his wrist, keeping him in contact with it the entire time.

"'M sorry, Rosie," Ciaran sobs.

"Hush," I interrupt him. "It's all right now. Sybill is in the stream. You can go sit with her once I get this band back on."

That launches a new flood of tears, but I whisper reassurances to him the way I used to when Lilly had nightmares. The memory chokes me more than the smoke, and I cough.

The band is harder to put back on than it was to take off. I eventually figure out how to keep it from opening back up a little bit when I let go, and release Ciaran, who has quieted somewhat.

"It's all right now," I repeat. "Let's go see Sybill."

~I meant to have her hear Sybill howling in her sleep, but I guess that's not yet. I would write it now if it weren't so late. Sorry.

(December 16, 2017 - 10:38 pm)

That's okay. I can just do more of Sybill's weird dreams for my part.

Sybill~

In the rain in the woods. It's wet, and I jump from puddle to puddle, laughing and making a mess. Father laughing. And suddenly there is no more rain. It's Fire, coming from the sky. And instead of Father and Mother, it's Rose and Ciaran. Ciaran is sobbing, while roaring and hurting Rose. Rose is smiling, with the distant look in her eyes, crying, and talking about smoke all at the same time. I am howling the forest fire song. While crying and coughing. Suddenly I howl in pain and I'm watching as a flaming tree falls...

Closer and closer....then darkness, then I wake up to Rose laughing with Ciaran...then I yank Ciaran' s band off his leg, he smiles and says, "Wolfie, Wolfie...So brave at first...but so very, very dead at last..."

And suddenly Rose is running and carrying me and Ciaran is there too, running with us from a flood, and a flaming tree falls. I run, Ciaran vanishes, Rose....Rose is trapped under the tree, I push the tree off of her, but it's...too late. And Rose is dead, covered in black roses that are on fire, and I howl in pain, then Ciaran chants, "Rosie-Post, both a liar and a thief!" where did that even come from what is happening and suddenly no Ciaran is there and fire suddenly rain starts and there's a scream Ciaran runs away and I howl in pain but suddenly it all stops....

And then I'm back home, inside my cave, with Mother howling the fire song, but suddenly roses grow from the floor but they are flaming and black and suddenly Ciaran emerges from the fireplace my parents vanish and Ciaran roars and he says," Wolfie...Wolfie...It's too bad you have to go..." and suddenly Fire, fire is everywhere I howl in pain and run but there's no way out, and I try to howl but instead I cough and I can't stand I collapse what is happening where is Rose where is Ciaran is this a dream it seems so real and I look down and on my leg is Ciaran' s BIG band and I try to howl but instead it is a scream oh no this can't be real it feels so real and suddenly flaming trees fall everywhere all I can hear are screams no no no no no and suddenly the trees land on me and darkness....

~Sorry it got so confusing. But basically Sybill can't get the nightmares of the fire out of her head and she is getting overwhelmed and at risk of emotional breakdown.

So, back to you.

I wait until Karune is alone and then appear to her.

“Karune,” I gently whisper.

She looks up in shock and spots my figure, running towards me for an embrace. She falls through air and regains her balance before looking at me.

“Lilly,” she gasps, trying to keep tears back.

“Listen,” I respond. “Death isn’t giving me much time. I need you to stop what you’re doing. You’re headed down a dark, dark path Karune. I can’t bear to watch you and not be able to do anything.”

”Lilly-“

”Shh,” I gently silence her. “Get away from this Ciaran. Go with Sybill. I don’t care where, but far away from here. If you stay, things will only get worse.”

”Lilly-“ she says, my name coming out in a choke this time.

“Karune,” I whisper. I hold my hand up to her face, and she tries to press my palm more against her cheek, but nothing is physically there to touch. But somehow I feel her tears. “I...love....”

I slowly disappear and choke out “you,” as I fade away.

“Enjoy your meeting?” Death asks me.

I sob silently, and Heather takes me by the hand to the other.

“C’mon,” she says quietly. “We have to prepare.”

Sybill~

I wake up to Ciaran and Rose appearing. Ciaran claps, then wipes tears from his eyes. He leans forwards and hugs me.

"Wolfie, me so so sorry! Hate meself! I didn't listen to Miguel and Cress and everybody else!" Ciaran cries. He sniffles.

"Miguel? Cress? Who 're they?" I ask Ciaran.

"My siblings! Miguel, he the oldest, Cress, she second-oldest. I got 26 siblings in total! We all ran away, I tell Miguel I wanna get me band away, and he says no, the bands keep us from being evil, but I say I ran away, then I do, then I find you guys!" Ciaran says.

"Where are they?" I ask.

"Not far from here," He replies happily.

"You should go back to them," Rose whispers,"Family...Family is important." She looks distant for a moment before she blinks and looks down at Ciaran.

"I know. Me wanna go back to Miguel and Cress and everybody else."

"Can you find them on your own?" I ask Ciaran.

"Yup! Me wanna go now, actually. So sorry 'bout the fire. I wish it never happened, it was bad, mad, sad!" Ciaran says, "Goodbye, Rosie and Wolfie. We meet each other here again sometime, Kay?"

We both nod. Ciaran hugs Rose and I before sniffling, saying goodbye, and slowly crawls away.

"Goodbye, Ciaran! See you again sometime!" I say before wincing in pain as my ribs hurt. The fire is dying now that Ciaran has the band on. It's mostly gone, only a couple bushes still have some specks of flame on them.

I wistfully gaze after Ciaran, then I look at Rose.

"Are you okay? You look like you've just seen a ghost," I say. Rose looks sad and frightened. I had noticed her walking into the nearby woods and coming back, but I hadn't thought anything of it.

"It's...Let's not talk about, okay? But we...we should go somewhere together. Not here. And Ciaran, well, let's just not take him along?" Rose says.

"Okay. I think I know somewhere we can go that's not here and not the cafe. I have family not to far from here. I live in the woods, it's outside of where the fire is. My mother, father, and...Um, my sister live in a cave. Just...Be nice to my sister, okay? She's blind." I say.

All right, if you want to. We can also switch over to mine if you change your mind.

I wrote a really long post earlier, but I think it didn't get submitted somehow... And now there's even more to cover. Darn, I hope I have time. Let's see what I remember.

--

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

This is so cool! OMK. Okay. Okay.

Rose~

Approaching the stream, most of the woodland has settled to a steady flicker. The smoke is still all too present, but it's thinner now. Ciaran's influence is amazing.

He befgins to cry again when he sees Sybill. Thankfully, she's still in the position I left her, head safely out of the water.

"Shh, shh," I murmur distractedly, kneeling to inspect her.

"Wolfie! Wolfie is dead!" he sobs.

"No, she isn't," I inform him. "She was hit by a falling tree, but she's doing fine. She's asleep."

Sybill whines and paws at my arm. She seems to be dreaming.

"Rosie, she gonna be okay, right?" His eyes are streaming fit to match my own. I smile slightly, cough.

"Yes," I assure, cradling her head. She whimpers. I think she may be having nightmares. All this squirming in her sleep won't help her ribs, anyway. I tap her cheek. She coughs.

"Wolfie, Wolfie, wake up!"

I dunk her head. She leaps up spluttering, losing her balance immediately to the pain, but I'm there to catch her. I ease her back into the water...

~--And that last part isn't really relevant because it doesn't match up with your post here. So, what happened next...

Oh! Before I forget. I was planning to have Karune end up alone by standing watch that night, but it seems silly now that I think about it. They're less than six hours away from the nearest town, and it hasn't been that long in-story since this whole thing started. So.

Rose~

I tap her cheek. She coughs. I repeat the motion. She coughs again, then once more, and her eyes open.

Ciaran claps beside me. I stand back, giving him space to run forward and hug her. He starts chattering her ears off the moment after. I would listen, but I feel a pulling in my chest and turn away.

I end up drifting into the smoldering woods, my feet unwilling to remain still. And that's when I hear it.

"Karune," Lilly whispers. I look up, and there she is, standing before me like she never died. Did she change her mind? Did she come back?

I rush forward and--through. I stumble, manage not to fall.

"Lilly," I rasp, half to myself. But she's still there. Immaterial. Not real. The pulling turns to a stone and forces its way into my throat.

"Listen," the apparition of my sister says. "Death isn't giving me much time. I need you to stop what you're doing. You're headed down a dark, dark path, Karune. I can't bear to watch you and not be able to do anything."

"Lilly--" I begin.

"Ssh," she interrupts. Get away from this Ciaran. Go with Sybill. I don't care where, but far away from here. If you stay, things will only get worse."

"Lilly," I choke.

"Karune," she says softly. She reaches out, up to my face. I try to touch her hand, but my fingers just go through. Not here. Not real. Or is she?

"I love..." She is fading.

"You..."

She is gone.

I weep.

No, I think. Don't cry. She's happy. She's safe. She's gone. Don't weep. Don't show tears. It's all right...

I eventually pull myself together. I've left Ciaran and Sybill waiting. I retrace my trail, go back to the stream.

"I didn't listen to Miguel and Cress and everybody else!" Ciaran is saying.

"Miguel? Cress? Who are they?" Sybill asks, still hoarse from the smoke.

"My siblings! Miguel, he the oldest, Cress, she second oldest. I got twenny-six siblings total! We all ran away. I tell Miguel I wanna get my band away, and he say no, bands keep us from being evil, but I say I run away. Then I do, then I find you guys!"

"Where are they?" Sybill inquires.

"Not far from here," Ciaran chirps.

"You should go back to them," I say. "Family... Family is important." I think of Lilly. Blink. Refocus.

"I know. Wanna go back to Miguel and Cress and everybody else."

"Can you find them on your own?" Sybill asks.

"Yup! Me wanna go now, actually. So sorry 'bout the fire, I wish it never happened, it was bad, mad sad!" Ciaran waved his arms around and scuttles off a pace or two. "Goodbye, Rosie and Wolfie. We meet each other here again sometime, 'kay?"

"Goodbye, Ciaran! See you again sometime!" Sybill promises, not without a wince. That would be her ribs, likely asserting their brokenness. She watches Ciaran scuttle away before looking at me.

"Are you okay? You look like you've just seen a ghost," she remarks. Interesting choice of words. Wolves have good hearing. I wonder if she was listening? Oh, Lilly. I'm so sorry.

"It's..." I shake my head. "Let's not speak of it, all right? But we..." My voice cracks, and I cough again before continuing. "We should go somewhere together. Not here. And Ciaran, well, let's not take him along?" He's gone off anyway. I wonder if he really has siblings.

"Okay," Sybill agrees. "I think I know somewhere we can go that's not here and not the café. I have family not too far from here. I live in the woods," Of course she does, she's a wolf. Unless she's working for the Resistance, in which case she's more likely to be on the move or in a base, "it's outside of where the fire is. My mother, father and... um, my sister live in a cave." Why the pause? I suppose I'll find out if I go. If her mother is the fussy type like mine, I'll be able to glean a lot about her life. "Just... Be nice to my sister, okay? She's blind." Oh. I hadn't anticipated that.

"Of course," I reply. "But don't try to stand up. Your ribs got hit, badly. Some may have broken. They need to be treated."

~Don't know what Sybill will answer and it's ten again (that seems to happen every day...), so ending there. And again, please keep in mind that I want Rose slowly go over the deep end. She'll be guarded and observant, a little awkward in the new family dynamic, and she talks fancy. She is a Nobyl, after all.

Mexi says rpho! Yes, Mexi, there are some RPs coming up. Or, at least, I hope so.

Oh boy. My device will not stop glitching, so there will possibly be thousands of typos.

Sorry if it gets a little hard to understand.

Sybill~

Rose is right about my ribs. They hurt.

Alot.

I wish my little sister Yin was here. She may be blind, but she's a very talented healer.

"My sister, Yin. She is good at healing. If we can make it to my home, I can get healed. For now...Um, I think I have an idea. We can make a sled type thing." I begin.

"We need two sturdy branches, lots and lots of vines or rope, they must be strong, and also...a large boulder, or hollowed out log half or driftwood, or anything I could lay on."

"Alright," Rose says, "I can get those." She runs of into the blackened woods.

A while later, she arrives with the materials. Rose has brought sturdy but scorched branches, blackened but firm vines, and a large, flat, scorched boulder.

I look up. It's getting dark. The sky is mostly black, with the sun disappearing and some thin bands of purple, or orange. The moon is slowly rising, and stars are appearing.

"Okay. Tie the branches to the boulder with some vines so it looks like a sled." Rose follows my instructions.

"Now, tie vines to the branches so you have rope you can pull the sled with." Rose listens, then makes the makeshift sled. I drag myself onto the boulder.

"Now, follow my directions and we're sure to arrive at my family's home."

~Okay, I'll make the new thread about Sybill' s home now.
