Kyngdom Survival Guide

Hello, it's me

Chatterbox: KYNGDOM™ RP Board

Hello, it's me

Hello, it's me again!

This is my first thread, and it's going to focus on my charrie Lycaella, her mom and her friend Nygrune. It's for following our adventures while we're not in a place or situation covered by another thread. 'We' because Ronan has asked to be Nygrune, to which of course I said yes.

Someone (I think Icy) said that B.I.G. and Catstrophe actually dislike each other. It makes sense, so... Just to let you know.

I'll begin where I left off on the Underwater Ball thread, with Lycaella and Nygrune planning to do some spying of a sort. They've asked Lycaella's mom to show them her notes, so I'll fast-forward to that.

Lycaella~

"Oh, so you're giving them their shadows back?"

We are sitting on a rug in my mom's room, reading her notes. I can't make sense of half the words, but she tells Nygrune and I what it means. Apparently, Catastrophe has found a way to separate shadows from their owners' bodies, and to keep him from creating a shadow army and destroying everything, B.I.G. has been researching it. They've managed to figure out how he did it, and are testing ways to reattach the shadows to their owners.

"Well, that's one way of putting it," my mom says. "We believe it will be beneficial to all of Kyngdom."

"I don't really understand this one... How would they sew them back on?" I ask.

"I believe it's with a special sort of thread, Ella," Mom says. "Let's see now..."

Nygrune finds it first. "A needle made from the bone of a magic or mythical being, preferably with thread also made from a magical material."

"Yes," my mom says, "Although personally I think that a binding spell shows more promise." I raise an eyebrow. She doesn't usually like magic this much. Out of nowhere, I yawn. Mom and Nygrune look at me like I'm disrupting something.

"Sorry," I say. "I'm getting kind of tired. You two can keep reading, I don't mind."

My mom nods. I hear her calling after me as I leave the room.

"Remember to brush your teeth!"

~End RP.

It actually is getting kind of late, so I should go. I hope this works out.

It is a work of great beauty. The thread is sufficiently topped, but does the party have to stop?

I'm feeling a bit jumpy, so I don't have the focus to RP right now, but I will as soon as I can. For now I suppose I'll catch up on... Wait, how long have I been gone? A week? That can't be. No. It's only been a couple of days, right? But then, I have been putting way more time into school and reading webcomics lately... Huh.

Hmmm, suppose I'll try an RP. Please let me know if it's too controlling.

Karune~

I put down my hood as the escort leaves. I have no doubt they'll be waiting outside, possibly one or two pressing an ear to the wall. The room is bare, save for a single light fixture set into the ceiling and a table occupied by Lilly. The girl and I stand across from each other. I think we're equally tired, but she seems as uneasy as I am desperate.

"Hello," I say.

"Hello."

"Do you know why I'm here?" It occurs to me that the question sounds a bit odd, perhaps even threatening, but it's too late now.

"No," she answers warily.

I nod. "My sister... Lilly. She was killed. I need her back. You can have anything you want."

Brynn frowns. "I don't..."

"You don't have to decide now," I add quickly. "You can if you want, of course, but I don't care, I just need you to bring my sister back. It happened not long ago, she's here if you need..." I indicate the stretcher, trying not to notice a spot of red on the shroud.

Brynn looks a little queasy, but she looks me in the eye. "I'll try." She sits down awkwardly on the stone floor. "Don't freak out." She closes her eyes, takes a deep breath, and slumps forward.

I run over to her, drop to my knees and realize she must be entering the land of the dead. I check her pulse and turn her on her side anyway.

A few minutes later, her eyes open and she sits up, inhaling sharply. I look over at the table, but nothing seems to have happened. I get to my feet, glancing between it and Brynn, but she shakes her head.

"She's not coming back."

I hear the words, but I can't believe them. A thousand possibilities start to run through my mind.

"She..."

"She says she loves you but she's happy and she doesn't want to go back, she can't go back, she's safe and you shouldn't worry about her."

I feel my heart rate rising with tears in my throat and acid in my stomach, but I do my best to clamp it all down.

"Thank you," I say tightly, curtsy, and walk stiffly out of the room, trying as hard as I can not to think or feel.

Karune~

I slip out of my room at two in the morning. Everything of note that happens at night happens at two in the morning, and tonight I plan to do something noteworthy.

The funeral was mostly a blur of eulogies and tears, words and faces and hands, flowers and sadness and food. I heard someone say they put a silver coin in her mouth for something in an old story. I took a sip of water only to discover it was actually white wine. That was when I left. I'd had enough.

Now I check to see if anyone is around and, finding nothing, take what I came for from the kitchens, the armory, Lilly's room, and I'm just about to go when I turn around and Mother is standing in the doorway, looking directly at me. The bag is in the corner between the bed and the wall, but there's no way she'll miss the way I'm dressed. She opens her mouth and I prepare to do whatever I have to.

"Oh, it's you. I thought perhaps it was Lilly and this whole thing was just a terrible dream."

Not a word about my armor, no sign she's noticed the bag or the fact that it's strange that either of us is up. I gather my courage and speak, my voice cracking slightly.

"It's the middle of the night, Mother. You should go back to bed. You'll need your strength."

"So do you," she counters. She must be more awake than I thought. I say nothing.

"I just wish..."

She trails off, letting the silence say everything she can't, or won't.

"I know." And it's true. "I know."

She lets me guide her back to her bedroom, although she knows the way perfectly well, even in the dark. Still no mention of my armor. Outside the door we stop.

"How is your father doing?" she asks. "He hasn't spoken to me."

"I don't know. All he's said is for me to keep up my combat training. It's almost like he's still away."

She nods slowly. I wait a moment longer, then reach out to open the door. Her hand puts a halt to mine, and she looks me in the eye. For the first time, I notice how much of her age and frailty the fire in her hides. The fire is back now as she speaks, burning her words into my mind.

"I don't know what you're planning, but you come back alive, do you hear me? I swear you'll be the end of me the way you get yourself in trouble. I've tried so hard to keep you out of it, but there's nothing I can do, and we're both getting too old for this quarrel. So I'm letting you go. I'm trusting you to stay safe, because not trusting you hasn't worked. Not trusting Lilly hasn't worked."

I am stunned. I never expected to hear those words from her. But she's not the type to play pranks. Which means...

"I will."

"Good."

And she turns the handle and goes into her room. As the door closes behind her, I feel the corners of my mouth rise into the slightest of smiles, and it stays as I step silently back into Lilly's room, collect my satchel and steal away into the woods.

I added Nieke to the post; I hope you don't mind.
Jaaws--
The wind whistled around Jaaws's scales as she soared a hundred feet above the ground. From land, she looked like nothing but an innocent vulture, with her wings all spread out and her tail too tiny to see. To the birds in the air with her, however, she looked very much like a dragon, and they flapped away as fast as they could before they could become her snack.
Jaaws's red eyes gleamed in the frigid temperatures. Though the air she was flying in was cold enough to instantly freeze a gallon of hot cocoa, she felt no ill effects--she was too interested in the task at hand to notice the frost forming at the edges of her tarlike scales.
The dragon was searching for something--or rather, someone. Three someones, in fact. She had heard tell of a group called 'the Elites', who seemed to be intent on divining her weaknesses and then spilling all her secrets to the meddling Resistance. Jaaws found the idea amusing, but was never one to take safety for granted. Her self-appointed mission was to find its active members and make good use of them.
The Sideaffected Power had heard they were traveling north, so the dragon was now traveling from Jokull south. She scanned the ground as she flew.
Jaaws hadn't been flying for long when she saw two humans and an anthro below, huddled around a fire and eating what smelled like old jerky and dried fruit. Jaaws inhaled again, but a stray whisp of smoke trailed into her nose and she coughed.
The dragon flew in circles around the travelers' campsite, getting gradually lower until she could hear their conversation.
"...Jokull," murmured the shorter human. "I still haven't heard back from the Resistance yet. I wonder if we shouldn't keep going anyway."
A gust of wind blew away part of the other human's reply: "...others...went. We...Jaaws...and help..."
Jaaws dared to descent just a few more feet. She thought she saw one of the humans glance up at her, but they seemed to dismiss her as harmless.
"I don't think we'll achieve it with numbers. If we get found, we're all dead. Or hypnotized. Of course, if that happens, at least we'll be able to see how many people she can hypnotize at o--"
Suddenly the taller one cast her eyes into the sky once more. Shielding her eyes against the glare of the sun, she stared hard at Jaaws, leapt up, and began chattering excitedly with her companions. The short one stood up and also began to stare at Jaaws and the anthro, torn between searching the sky and rescuing the supplies which were about to be devoured by the unattended flames.
Jaaws, satisfied that she had located her prey, tucked her wings in and turned herself down into a steep dive.
Hazel~
Trixie, Nieke, and I are talking about plans--plans, plans, plans; wow, I am SO ready to actually do something--around a tiny fire. Our suits the Resistance lent us work really well to keep us warm (mine was broken until Trixie fixed it for me earlier), but unfortunately, fire is still needed to cook our meal. Dinner is going to be jerky stew, or in Nieke's case, stew minus the jerky.
"I don't think we'll achieve it with numbers. If we get found, we're all dead anyway. Or at least hypnotized. Of course, if that happens, at least we'll be able to see how many people she can hypnotize at o--"
Trixie leaps up and stares hard at something in the sky. "Guys, tell me what that looks like to you," she says forcefully, and I stand up as well.
I peer at a large black bird flying above us.
"The fire!" Nieke yelps, rushing to pull our supplies away from the fire, which has suddenly decided to burn hotter.
My first thought is that the bird is a vulture. But then Nieke points out the wings. They're ridged and vaguely resemble a bat's...
"Guys," I gasp. "You don't think--"
"It is!"
And that's when Jaaws dives right for us.

So Hazel is going to get hypnotised but Trixie isn't, right? What about Nieke?
