Sidekick

Chatterbox: Crowd Sorcery

Sidekick

Sidekick

Sidekicks in great stories come in many shapes and sizes: a jolly traveling companion, a dog or cat, a wise wizard who gives helpful advice, a goldfish in a bowl, a walking stick that talks. A sidekick gives the main character someone to talk to, which allows for dialogue and interaction. With two minds in the story, there’s the possibility for more action, tension, and more unexpected things to happen!

I can imagine Quill, the moonlight girl I mentioned on the Hero and Heroines thread, having a friend, Colin, whom she meets because he goes into the forest at night to gather Silvercaps, special flowers that sprout up when the moon is shining but wither before dawn.

I might write: “During the daytime, when he was not off in the village selling his Silvercaps, Colin tended to sleep inside his favorite hollow tree trunk. So there were usually bits of bark in his unruly dust-colored hair, and sometimes a centipede would crawl out of his pocket or an ant would drop out of his collar. He scratched his head often and smelled like the forest after a rain.”

Now that we have a main character, Fable Thatcher, what sidekick will you imagine for her? A comical friend? A wise mentor? A romantic interest? Will your sidekick even be human? Let your imaginations run wild!

Name: Sir Cecil

Appearance: tall and lanky. He wears rusty armor that is much too small for him with an even rustier sword which he has never used and rarely shows his face, but his emerald-colored eyes can usually be seen peeking out from out of his visor.

Background: He was the seventh child of the king and queen of a distant, little-known kingdom. The royal family soon realized Cecil was a complete failure. Not only did he show no talent in chivalry, but he was always breaking the rules and sneaking off places. Soon, the king and queen regarded Cecil as the least useful knight of all time, and his siblings claimed he would never go on a single quest.

Until one night, when Cecil found a magic notebook with an infinite number of pages. Without receiving an ounce of training, Cecil declared that he would explore the entire world and record everything down in the notebook to prove he was worthy. He then rode off into the night with the notebook and a quill pen, and spent the next few years exploring distant lands, sneaking into the lairs of fantastic creatures, and observing magical occurrences. Through the entire quest he raised his quill many times, but didn't raise his sword once.

One day, he stumbled upon Fable Thatcher's village. Surprised to find Fable shared his interest of writing, and astounded to find she had such and amazing talent, Cecil offered Fable a new life of adventure.

Occupation or Trade: Wanderer, poet, and many other quirky jobs that include anything but knight.

Attitude towards main character: When Cecil looks at Fable, he feels a sense of recognition. Since they are so similar, both being outcasts and both enjoying writing, he feels he has known her his whole life. He loves her taelnt and is not quite sure why she doesn't love it herself.

Strengths or special abilities: No specific strength but his courage and quick wit.

Fears, weaknesses or secrets: Cecil is afraid of losing his notebook, as it is a miracle he has not lost it yet (he is not the most organized person).

How the sidekick is helpful: When it comes to fighting, Cecil can't help you. But his wealth of knowledge from years of study mixed with his wit can help him and Fable out of most situations.

What the sidekick wants most: To show the king and queen he is worthy of being in the royal family.

Crowd Sorcery Sentences: "So, Cecil," Fable said, the wind rushing into her eyes and making them water as the horse increased his speed, "Are you a... knight?"

Cecil looked back at her, his expression slightly pained. "Well, you might say that," he replied awkwardly. Fable wasn't fazed by this strange behavior. Who was she to know how a knight was supposed to act? After all, she had grown up in a small village, and it was the last likely place you'd expect a knight with emerald eyes to come riding into. Cecil was the first knight Fable had even seen. She had never attempted to create one in her writing, for fear that it would be hostile.

After several minutes of riding in silence, Fable tried to make conversation again. "Cecil," she said, "Where are we going?"

"Wherever the road takes us," replied Cecil in a much cheerier voice then bfore. Apparently knights were a touchy subject for him but roads were not.

Suddenly, the road came to an utterly complete stop in front of a clearing. "Whoa!" Cecil shouted, stopping the horse in his tracks. Cecil hopped off the tawny animal and observed the clearing. "Huh. That's weird," Cecil muttered. I don't remember any roads around here having dead ends. I must record this!" Cecil whipped out his notebook and started writing. Over the sound of the knight scribbling, Fable thought she heard another sound. Something familiar. Something- that she had created. And it was coming from the clearing.

At once, Fable remembered what it was. "CECIL, RUN!" she shrieked.

1. Name- Agathon of Agrophia

2. Appearance- He has dark, ebony hair, piercing
green eyes, an iron left hand, and cafe con leche skin. He often wears a glove
over his iron hand to hide it. He will also often be seen wearing a rice hat,
as he hates the sun in his face and the rice hat provides rather good
protection from that.

3. Background- Agathon lived his whole live in a
town by the sea, where he helped his father build ships. His father was a kind
and understanding man, and always helped Agathon understand how things worked
in a profound and meaningful way. However, his father died of malignant
melanoma when he was only thirteen years old.  There was nothing he could
do. The village physician said he could not treat such a thing that had
progressed so much. He watched, helplessly, as his father was slowly consumed
by the cancer. After his father's death, Agathon became an aprentice to his
millitant uncle.

4. Occupation or trade- He is his uncles
apprentice. (Agathons uncle is a blacksmith), but what he really wants to do is
build ships again.

5. Attitude toward main character- He sympathizes
with her, as he is stuck in a simmilar situation.

6. Strengths or special abilities- When his life
is at stake, Agathon's body will adapt quickly to save himself from whatever or
whatever is about to kill him. For example, if a plague were to hit his
village, Agathon's body would adapt to be immune to that disease. He is sort of
a LaMarkian being. He does not follow by the rules of Darwin. Agathon got these
powers when he first started working for his uncle because he was bitten by a
magical flying kitty (magical flying kitty saliva causes Lamarkism to come
true).  Agathon, personality-wise, is extremly tenacious, and will never
give up on anything he has set his mind to, even if it is doomed to fail. He is
also quite friendly, and philosophical as well. Agathon is also a good singer,
and a good liar.

7. Fears, weaknesses, or secrets- He cannot alter
any of the adaptations his body makes when his life is in danger, which he
knows might have negative connotations in the future.  He also has an
extreme phobia of skin cancer. He also does not think very highly of himself,
because his uncle is constantly berating him.

8. How is the sidekick helpful? He gives the main
character moral support, and he helps the pair of them get out of tough
fixes.

9. What does the sidekick want most?He wants to
be finaly rewarded for his hard work, not just slapped on the wrist by somebody
who said he did not do enough, that his work was second rate.

10. Your Crowd Sorcery Sentence(s)

Agathon hated magical flying kitties, one of
which bit him a month back and gave him this Lamarkian curse. He also hated
skin cancer, which took his father. He also hated his uncle, whom he could not
please, nope, nope, nope, not in any shape or form. As a matter of fact,
Agathon could list a bazillion things he hated at the moment. He had a lot
happen to him in the past two months, and he was in a rather crummy mood. As he
was humphing along, he bumped into a girl with a satchel. The contents of the
said satchel spilled, which included a stuffed magical flying kitty (Agathon
was starting to get a bad vibe off this person; grr, all magical flying ) a
diary of some sort, some pens, some ink(which thankfuly, the container did not
break), and a book of some sort.

"I'm so sorry,"he sputtered. Agathon
got down on his knees and helped her pick up her things.

"Oh, thank you,"replied she.

Here Madrigal was set to fire off a string of expletives that would have made an orc blush, but Lycan clamped a hand over her mouth.

"Give me the Reckart. You know, that tracker ball? Give it. It'll be easier for you."

He hauled her up by her collar.

"Never."

"Alright. I'll just take it and find her that way-"

He was cut off as a powerful energy blast slammed into him. He spun around as Madrigal pitched off the mountain. Oh, no.....

The Reckart dislodged itself from her pocket and flew up, up, up into Lycan's hand, as she fell down, down, down to Lycan's cruel laugh.

"Oh my goodness I'm so sorry!" I said wiping her off. There was dust all over her. I knew I shouldn't, but I blew the dust of her with the wind. Thanks weather, I said in my head. Now, most people would run and hide, but this girl, whom I never met tugged me out into a alley. "I'm Fable and I need your help." She said writing something. She explained everything. I hope you like my entry! Smile

Name: Griffin Kindler

Physical Appearance: Piercing green eyes, neat dirty blonde hair, average build. He has a tree-shaped scar embedded in his back.

Background: Griffin grew up in Fable's village. He was a hardworking boy, and his specialty was woodworking. In fact, many people considered him the finest whittler in the land. However, there was something different about him. Something... evil. He only cared for himself, and never for others. One day, when a caravan of gypsies wandered into the village, Griffin noticed an old cloaked man with an intricate cane leaning against a tree. Approaching the man with a pitcher, Griffin offered the man some water. The man nodded, but instead of giving him the pitcher, Griffin snatched the cane and threw it into the woodpile. Suddenly, the man cast off his cloak and revealed himself as a powerful druid. "MAYBE NOW YOU'LL BE A LITTLE LESS SELFISH!" the druid boomed. With that he took a branch from the tree he was leaning against, and a green beam of energy shot out of it, striking Griffin in the back. ever since that day, Griffin has had a tree-shaped scar on his back. Every time he commits an act of evil, a branch is added to the scar, and every time he commits a act of good, a branch is removed. If every branch leaves the tree, he will be rid of the curse forever. However, if too many branches appear on the tree, he will become a tree. There are so many branches on the tree, Griffin fears he may never get rid of all of them, but he has been steadily removing branches by doing good deeds to everyone in the village.

Occupation or trade: No specific job.

Attitude towards main character: Griffin met Fable while gathering wood. A first, he just saw her as another way to remove branches from his cursed scar, and only pretended to by friendly to her. But as he got to know her, he became a true friend to her. He is the only one who understands her, and she is the only one who understands him.

Strengths or special abilities: Whittling, of course.

Fears, weaknesses or secrets: Griffin cannot fight, at least not with his own fists, because this is considered an act of evil and will add branches to his cursed scar.

How the sidekick is helpful: He can whittle almost anything!

What the sidekick wants most: He wants most to be rid of the curse. He truly believes he is a changed person, and will continue to be helpful even after the scar is gone.

Your crowd sorcery sentences: He remembered it all too well- the blinding green flash, the painful tingling sensation on his back, the angry yell of his father running out of the house, but he never thought it would come to this. Griffin gasped for air as the scar prickled more than ever and the rough bark closed over his mouth-

Griffin awoke in a cold sweat. He had been nightmares like this ever since the day he had been cursed. As he stared out the window at the pale moon, he wondered if Fable was having nightmares as well...

Arion fell again to the floor. Blood was oozing out of his cheek, where he had landed on broken glass. But he did not care about that. He was starring at his reflection, which was shown on the glass.

He was no longer young. He was old.

10. Your Crowd Sorcery Sentence(s)

I couldn't stop looking at the hero. My parents were in another room chatting up how happy they were that the caught him. The told me to guard, but I can't. It's wrong. I fiddled with the keys. My eyes stopped on the one to let the hero out in. I had a option. Be good or evil. And of course, I choose good. I unlock the door and whisper "run". As he runs he smiles lightly and exits. I hearmy parents running in so I pretend I'm reading.

3 hours later

My parents have reached the village. I know where there taking me. To the wise man. I think he is dumb. But that's where, unfortunately, I'm wrong. Dead wrong. Ridiculously wrong. The man was levitating. I gasped. He pulled me from my parents. I gasped again. They rolled there eyes. I growled. The man took me to the...the prophecy room. His eyes glowed red. He said

"Young girls aren't bright, nor are you Shadow. Your prophecy is a bad one. This is yours child. Thinking smart will not help you, nor will anyone trust you, due to your magic. The magic will consume you day by day, night by night, for you choose good. The magic will consume you if used frequently. You will dread this, and fear will control. You cannot trust no one. For no one trusts you."

4 years later.

I'm running. After releasing all my parents prisoners, they started chasing me, trying to kill me. I stopped them, but I cast a spell to attack eachother. The prophecy told me not to use my magic, and this is the first time in 4 years. The prophecy, I'm frightened by it. I dream of becoming black magic essence, all evil in the world, and wake with sweat on my forehead. I can't fear it. But I due dread it.

Present day

I woke in my cave. The moss beding is working better than the straw bedding in used a month ago. I grab my bow, quiver and dagger. I put my quiver on, my dagger in my belt and keep the bow in my hand. I grab the bag of fresh meat and harvested fruit and put it around my shoulder. I head to the village and set up my stand. It's a bright day today. I see a girl around my age approach. "Welcome to Sunnys meats and fruits stand. May I help you?" I say. My fake name is Sunny. If people knew my name, do you think they would buy my items?! "Umm... yes." The girl looked at a piece of paper and wrote something. She gasped as I saw a orange clonk me on my head. "What the.." I say as she quickly says"Please don't tell anyone. If you follow me I will explain everything." I nod and follow her into a alley. She explains and I shiver at the writing issue. I don't tell her my problem of course, but I do know one thing about this girl, and her name is;

Fable Thatcher

Reading it over I'm iffy bout this, so I'm in progress of making a better character.

(July 12, 2014 - 9:00 am)

Name: James, and for a nickname, Jim, or Jimmy, or Jamey, or Joe, or Joey.

Appearance: Longish, wavy, brown hair, about halfway down his neck. Straight nose, deep, brown eyes. Average sized ears and mouth. Simple, dark colored clothes. No freckles on his face.

Background: James grew up in a small town during a war between Kentoplas and Smerga. The problem was that the small town he grew up in was in Kentoplas, and his father was a soldier.  James hardly ever saw his fathe, and when he did, his father was yelling at his wife, or at James, or talking about bills and the war, or telling James to toughen up, because the world wasn't all nice and wonderful like his picture books. James loved his Dad, and he was really sad that his Dad treated him that way, and was hardly ever there for him. Then one day when James was twelve, a letter was sent to his mother telling her the bad news that his father had died in action. His mother cried hard, and so did he, and all he could think about was the last thing his father, Samuel, had said to him: " I love you son, I really do, I'm just trying to ready you for the world. Don't throw away your life and become a soldier like me, do something with meaning, something good to the world. And toughen up, because the world ain't like your picture books, it ain't," or something like that.

The rest of his life he lived with his mother, and since he was an only child, he had to get a  job and be the man of the house. Jobs were scarce, and when he went to get a job ditch digging, the people at the head of the job thought he was a "trouble maker", and they wanted him to "run along and stop annoying them", so he had to be a shoe shiner for twenty-five cents a person.

Finally, when he was about 18, his mother got remaried, so he gathered his things and left in search of a better job and place.

Occupation or trade: Once he got to another town, he got a better job as a carpenter, paying 5 dollars an hour (which was an average amount at that time). He made a few friends named John, Billy, and Elliot who helped him build a house that later on he decided to move into.

Attitude toward main character:  James wasn't always Fable's sidekick. Let me tell you how that became true before I tell you his attitude toward her.
One day James asked Elliot if he had gone to school when he was young. Elliot said that he had, and James wasn't always Fable's sidekick. Let me tell you how that became true before I tell you his attitude toward her.

One day James asked Elliot if he had gone to school when he was young. Elliot said that he had, and proudly added that Fable was in his class all through Grade School. "We became close friends, but we lost touch when we went to High School," he said. James asked who Fable was. "You don't know who Fable is?!" Elliot  asked, shocked."No, I don't," said James. Elliot explained that Fable was the best writer in the world, and whatever she wrote became true.
James asked who Fable was. "You don't know who Fable is?!" Elliot  asked, shocked."No, I don't," said James. Elliot explained that Fable was the best writer in the world, and whatever she wrote became true. "Your kidding," James said.

Once he had been convinced that Fable really was the best writer in the world, and capable of making things come true, James wanted directions to her house. Elliot told him the directions but said that she wouldn't welcome James in without a tussle. James didn't care. He wanted his father back, and he would surely tussle for that.

When she opened the door to James, he said,"I hear you can write things and make them happen. Is that true?"

"I'm not interested in one of your interviews. Now run along!" And she started to close the door.

"Wait! Can you? I need to know! I'm desperate!"

She stopped.

"Just what are you desperate for, young man? Annoying me?"

"I'm so sorry for disturbing you, Miss Fable. It's just that my father has passed away..." He looked at his feet.

"I need your help," he said.

Sympathy filled her eyes.

"I'm sorry, but I cannot help you."

She started to close the door again.

"W-wait!" He stammered. "You mean to say that what you write doesn't come true?"

"I'll kill that Elliot!" He thought.

When Fable had explained that she couldn't control what she wrote, she pulled out her notebook and quill. "Oh, no," she said. "Why don't you run along now." No sooner than she said that, she wrote that James would become her sidekick.

James's attitude toward Fable is respectful but bold, because the only reason he came to fable was so she could make his father come back to life.

Strengths or special abilities:He's strong, so I guess that counts as a strength (hee hee!). He can also relate to people when they're sad, and he's good at cheering them up. And no, he doesn't have super powers.

Fears, weaknesses, or secrets: A weakness of James's is that since he became the man of the house when he was twelve, he had to quit school. That means that anything one learns in the end of seventh Grade and higher, he does not know.

A fear of James's is being forced to be a soldier.

James does not have any secrets I can think of.

How is the sidekick helpful?: Since James is very strong,(see strengths or special abilities) he can lift or push or pull things if they're in the way, and he can console Fable if she is sad.

What does the sidekick want most?: More than anything in the world, James wants his father back.

Your Crowd Sorcery Sentence(s):"Why does father yell at us and do things that... hurt my feelings?!" James asked.

"Joey, my dear. Your father doesn't mean it to be this way. It's just that he's wounded on the inside... on his heart. He's seen so many sad things happen..." his mother paused. " I know it's hard dear, but try to be strong, okay? And know that I'm always there for you." Then she hugged him and held him close.

"I will try momma, as hard as I can," he whispered, as a tear traveled down his face.
