Chatterbox: Crowd Sorcery

Sidekick

Sidekick

Sidekicks in great stories come in many shapes and sizes: a jolly traveling companion, a dog or cat, a wise wizard who gives helpful advice, a goldfish in a bowl, a walking stick that talks. A sidekick gives the main character someone to talk to, which allows for dialogue and interaction. With two minds in the story, there’s the possibility for more action, tension, and more unexpected things to happen!

I can imagine Quill, the moonlight girl I mentioned on the Hero and Heroines thread, having a friend, Colin, whom she meets because he goes into the forest at night to gather Silvercaps, special flowers that sprout up when the moon is shining but wither before dawn.

I might write: “During the daytime, when he was not off in the village selling his Silvercaps, Colin tended to sleep inside his favorite hollow tree trunk. So there were usually bits of bark in his unruly dust-colored hair, and sometimes a centipede would crawl out of his pocket or an ant would drop out of his collar. He scratched his head often and smelled like the forest after a rain.”

Now that we have a main character, Fable Thatcher, what sidekick will you imagine for her? A comical friend? A wise mentor? A romantic interest? Will your sidekick even be human? Let your imaginations run wild!

1. Lirdof

2. A sprite, with human but smaller features, thick wings, bald, purple eyes, spritely, optimist, blue skin, (which matches Fables eyes,) wears a robe made from parchment.

3. The unknown writer of the prophecy sent Lirdof at Fable's birth to look over her and be her companion. Over the years, Lirdof's job got harder as Fable got older and dreaded her power more and more.

4. Lirdof's occupation is mainly taking care of Fable, although he does visit and trade with the forest creatures from time to time.

5. Lirdof has seen how Fable cries and constantly writes, so he feels sorry for her, and insists Fable gets a Hobby or some friends.

6. Lirdof is friends with the writer of the prophecy, who is seemingly a powerful being. As a sprite, Lirdof also has some magic, though nobody knows what kind.

7. As you could guess, Lirdof is smaller then Fable and can be easily hurt or killed. His main weakness is sand, but nobody knows why.

8. Fable would probably be dead if it wasn't for Lirdof protecting her.

9. More then anything else, Lirdof wants Fable to be happy.

10. Lirdof burst through the door of Fables room. "Fable! Fable, guess what?" Fable turned around from her writing, tears on her face. "O-oh. I found something cool, do you wanna go see it?" Fable turned around, and a tear dripped onto the table. "I'd rather just write. You should leave." Lirdof wasn't about to give up yet. "Well, I don't want you writing if it makes you sad. Plus, I found this really really cool thing-" Lirdof, just go!"

Hi guys! Consider my entry:

Name: Yalan Goldleaf

Appearence: Red hair, shorter than average, often wears clothing made of natural resources.

Backround: He is an adventurous shapeshifter from one of the four tribes. He is from Brethmarf, the tribe that can shapeshift into animals. However, he was rogue and never joined in the tribal ceremonies. Evntually, he was banished from his villaige.

Occupation: He works for a bookstore, but at the beginning of the story is close to being fired because he is often distracted and thinking about whether he should return home. He joined the hero because of pure adventure lust.

Attitude: He is brave and a bit of a smart alic at hapy times. However, he is often a bit withdrawn, scribbling things dfown in his journal for no reason, and when he is in an area where shapeshifters live, he is afraid they will reguard him as a traitor and try to kill him.

Strengths: Yalan can turn into any known animal. But since he lives in a world populated by so many fantastic animals, every time he lays eyes on a new animal, he records it in his journal and can then turn into it.

Weaknesses, Fears, Secrets: Yalan fears that one day the Brethmarf tribe will find him. However, he has never told the hero this, and he\she is often confused at Yalan's attitude changing from comical to nervous, which happens often.

How he is helpful: Yalan's animal transformation abilities are often very helpful. For instance, he can turn into a crocidile to cross a river, turn into a bird to scout around, etc.

What he wants most: Yalan wants most to make up with his tribe and maybe one day join them again.

Sentences: As he climbed up the ladder to put the book in it's proper place, Yalan paused to stare into the deep blue beyond of the sea. He thought that maybe if he stared hard enough, he would be able to see ther other side of the ocean where his tribe was. Yalan wondered if they were thinking about him. Foomp! Yalan was so caught up in his own fantasies he almost didn't notice the book that was slowly slipping from his arms. "Yalan!" barked the shopkeeper if you don't pick up the pace I'm going to hav to give you the boot! There's popple here waiting to buy our antique books, and you can't be dropping them on the floor!" "Yes, sir," Yalan replied drearily as he began his descent down the ladder to retrieve the fallen book. This would go faster if I could turn into something that wasn't so- short. thought Yalan to himself. But, unfortunately, the shopkeeper had banned shapeshifting in his shop ever since Yalan had turned into an elephant and knocked over seven bookshelves.

Name: Pandora Caverly

Appearance: Medium height, thin, black hair pulled into a pony-tail, green eyes, dressed in brown cargo pants, black boots, and a black hoody, hood down, open over a soft green t-shirt with a tree design. Also has a a belt with useful things hanging from it, a silver chain with a seashell hanging under her shirt, a green headband.

Background: From a small village. She left home at 15, after her mother died. She spent some time in a big city but found it lacking. It was fun for a while, but she wanted to be out in the world exercising her talent.

Job: She worked as a shopgirl in the city, but now sells information. If she meets a fellow traveler she finds what they want to know and tells them--for a price, not necessarily money. Slmetimes goods, services, or simply a story or information for herself.

Attitude towards main character: She's just a customer at first, but she seems more interesting than most, and Pandora is a go-with-the-flow sort of girl. She'll tag along, see what she finds.

Strengths and abilities: She can communicate with animals. It's why she likes to travel, she gets to meet way more of them. Other than that, she has a great memory, she is funny and sarcastic, she knows how the world works.

Fears, weaknesses, and secrets: She hates settling down. She misses her mom--(her necklace is from when they went to the beach together)--and hasn't been back home since she died. She fears having to face her family again. She keeps her powers a secret, too, as it's never a good idea to broadcast that sort of thing.

Helpfulness: Pandora's good companionship. She makes a good friend. She's street-smart. She knows a lot. Animal communication comes in handy, too.

Desires: She wants a fun time, a good memory.  Truthfully, though, she wants to see her dad again.

CSS: Pandora kicked a pebble with her sideways boot. It skided across the pavement, landing several yards away. She walked after it, her head turned down towards the road when she heard a voice behind her.

"That's a horrible jacket," it said. "It's got a hole. And what's she doing with that thing in the middle of Summer?"

She turned, and walking backwards she saw the offending creature perched on a stump by the side of the road, bushy tail and all. She merely laughed and flapped her hand at it. Squirrels were always rude.

Name

Maker

Appearence

Maker is a talking squirell.

Backround

Maker was voted out of a squirell town 50-0 because he talked to much and blurted out who other people like-liked. He has an uncanny ability to know that kind of stuff.

Oucupation

Maker would love a job.

Attitude twords Fable

Likes her, but wishes she could have a boyfriend someday so Maker could spread the news to every town in the world. You see why Fable doesn't want a boyfriend, right?

Special Abilities

Has an uncanny ability to know who likes who, and he also can talk, and is always too chattery.

Secrets

Has a secret girlfriend he picked up.....

Maker is helpful because he gives Fable someone to talk to, even though he is a pest sometimes.

All Maker wants is to help Fable, because Fable is the first friend Maker ever had.

My sentance is

"Okay... Liza likes Jack but Jack likes Rene and Rene hates both Jack and Liza. If Jack gets hooked up with Liza and Rene gets hooked up with Tom, things will go right. If that doesn't happen....... KA-BOOM!" - Maker, the chattery squirell who knows who likes who

1 Nyuen   (NEW-ain)

2 He is a spirit. He has a humanoid form and a pure elemental form. His humanoid form is light and dark green, wearing a thin suit of armor and a roman infantry style helmet covering most of his face. No one knows what his pure form looks like because gazing apon it normally kills you.

3 At the birth of a elven child a spirit appears to become that child's soulgaurdian. The soulguardian protects and teaches the child and remain as thier companion for the rest of their life.

Nyuen was a soul guardian until his charge was killed by a group of magic hating humans. He wandered for over ten years before he happened upon the human child Fable Thatcher. Her soul called to him drawing him in. He guarded her in secret for many years. The day she turned ** he revealed himself to her and became her true Soulguardian.

4 Soulguardian

5 protective, dosn't want to fail her like he did the other child.

6 He has advanced elemental powers (He controls the domain of earth) And a sword he can summon out of the void.

7 afraid of failure, will protect Fable even if it means his own destruction (there are worse things than death)

8 see 6 also very wise and stategic.

9 He wants to protect Fable to make up for his failure.

10 Nyuen gazed down at Reythea his charge as she sat on a tree stump sketching the nearby creek her long golden hair flowing in the breeze. He heard a noise that sounded like something crashing through the bushes, turning he came face to face with a red and golden crested helm. He flinched giving the helmed creature time to whip out a glowing blue staff, it radiated energy but of what sort he was not sure. He tried to summon his sword from the void but his power was gone, He gazed at the staff apprehinsivly. more crashing noises came from behind him, Reythea screamed as more helmed figures crashed through the underbrush. He tried to cast a barrier to protect her but he could do nothing. The first figure thrust the staff at him, even his reflexes were slowed so had no time to dodge, it hit him squarely in the chest sending jolts of electricity through his body. He fell to the ground paralyzed as the figures converged on Reythea. He was forced to watch as they simultaniosly ran her through with their swords. He lay there silently sobbing as night closed in around him.

Ugh, sorry people. My sidekick entry, Yalan Goldleaf, had many spelling errors in it because I wrote it in a hurry. I also did not know that I was allowed to put Fable Thatcher's name in it. I hope my entry is still acceptable! Fred, if it goes up for voting, please take the errors out of it.

Thanks!
