Chatterbox: Crowd Sorcery

Sidekick

Sidekick

Sidekicks in great stories come in many shapes and sizes: a jolly traveling companion, a dog or cat, a wise wizard who gives helpful advice, a goldfish in a bowl, a walking stick that talks. A sidekick gives the main character someone to talk to, which allows for dialogue and interaction. With two minds in the story, there’s the possibility for more action, tension, and more unexpected things to happen!

I can imagine Quill, the moonlight girl I mentioned on the Hero and Heroines thread, having a friend, Colin, whom she meets because he goes into the forest at night to gather Silvercaps, special flowers that sprout up when the moon is shining but wither before dawn.

I might write: “During the daytime, when he was not off in the village selling his Silvercaps, Colin tended to sleep inside his favorite hollow tree trunk. So there were usually bits of bark in his unruly dust-colored hair, and sometimes a centipede would crawl out of his pocket or an ant would drop out of his collar. He scratched his head often and smelled like the forest after a rain.”

Now that we have a main character, Fable Thatcher, what sidekick will you imagine for her? A comical friend? A wise mentor? A romantic interest? Will your sidekick even be human? Let your imaginations run wild!

I need a good last name for my character. Any ideas, guys? I'm thinking maybe Silverwood or Faith or Diamone. Something....fairy-tale-y. Thanks!

1. Name: Chanim

2. Appearance: Chanim has short hair, the color of chocolate.
It curls a little at the ends and is usually orderly. His eyes are
hazel, soft and kind. He is about 5' 4". After she first saw him, Fable deducted that he was about thirteen of
fourteen. Chanim has very pale skin, and his hands
are smooth, as if he has never worked hard. He is not terribly
skinny, but would never be called fat, either. He wears whatever clean garments he can find, so his clothes are usually a bit big or small for him.

3. Background:  No one in the world knows where Chanim
came from or how he got to where he is, not even Chanim himself. But
there is an exception. One person knows how he appeared, thought she
does not know what he did before, or even if he was alive
before he came. The girl's name is name is Fable Thatcher.

Fable has brought him into the world, against her will, by
the curse that was put upon her. She wrote about him, appearing in
the middle of the street near where she was staying, and not having
any memories but a few scattered things. His name, for one.

4. Occupation or trade: Since he appeared, he has been
constantly trying to see Fable and talk to her. He does a few odd
jobs to make money, but is always trying to talk to Fable - and
more often than not, succeeding of at least meeting her.

5. Attitude toward main character: Chanim respects Fable,
because he knows that she knows something about his past and how he
appeared, and he tries to make friends with her. He does not,
however, know how she brought him to this world. As usual, he is
quiet and sensitive around her, and does not get mad in her sight or
anyone else's.

6. Strengths or special abilities He has a good heart and
loves animals. He is gentle and patient, and never lets his temper
get the better of him.

7. Fears, weaknesses, or secrets: He is afraid of a few
machines or tools that are used in this world. He craves to know
where he came form and what kind of life he had back then.

8. How is the sidekick helpful? Chanim is persistent, and really wants to be a friend to Fable. He is good with animals, and he uses his skills with Fable. Fable, little by little, overcomes her fear of him and of her curse, and is cheered up by his presence.

9. What does the sidekick want most?  To know
where he came form and what kind of life he had back then.

10. Your Crowd Sorcery Sentence(s):

Chanim crept around the corner. There she was, sitting down and writing. Her face was almost completely calm as she bent over the paper, the words flowing from her pen, but as Chanim stood still and studied her, he noticed that there was a hint of - was that fear? But what reason would she have to be afraid? She was writing, like she always was. Nothing was threatening her. She was in her own world.

Suddenly Fable's head rose up slowly. Their eyes met, and hers, so starry and blue, widened. Quickly she jerked up her pen and scrambled up, her face a picture of terror. "You. Why won't you leave me alone? You've come, so leave me alone!" she stood uncertainly, her eyes searching for a way out.

"Fable, I'm not going to hurt you. It's all right, you can sit down." Chanim tried to make his voice as soft and comforting as possible.

Fable hesitated, and for a second, Chanim felt a pang of hope. She had never paused before, she had always run away in fear. Maye this time, he would be able to talk to her, have a real conversation. Maybe they could be friends. Maybe he would find out where he came from. He held his breath.

Fable stared into his eyes, studying them intently. A brief look of longing crssed Fables face, so instantaneous that Chanim almost missed it. But then she shook her head, and whispered painfully, "No. No, it's not alright. Just leave me alone!" A tear trickled down her cheek. Then she turned and ran away, leaving Chanim alone, staring after her.

True, that was really awesome! That's exactly how I pictured Fable!

1. Name: Fifer Thorn

2. Appearance: Very tiny, barely 2 feet high. She has long black hair that is always trailing behind her on the ground. She has deep brown eyes, and she always has a grin on her face. She also has hundreds of freckles. Fifer wears a buckskin tunic tied with a sash, and leggings, which are almost completely covered by her tall boots. She is incredibly spry and can be seen leaping form branch to branch in the forest. She is always moving around.

3. Background: She was abondoned by her parents as a baby at the edge of a forest. An elderly couple found her, and raised her as their only child. They were very poor, but they tought her that you could always find the bright side in things. When she was 6, they passed away. Fifer left into the woods, where she has lived since. She made friends with the animals there.

4. Occupation or trade: Fifer is a Wanderer. She travels from place to place, meeting people (and getting odd looks for her appearance). She is restless and does not like to stay in one plce for long.

5. Attitude towards main character: At first, she was a little wary of Fable. However, she soon grew to like her. She wishes that she could do something to help Fable, and she tries to cheer her up whenever she is depressed.

6. Strengths or special abilities: After all of her time spent in the forest, she has learned to speak to animals. Se is also incredibly compassionate and caring. Fifer is nice to everyone and everything.

7. Fears, Weaknesses, or Secrets: Fifer is terrified of being alone. Her whole life she has been surrounded by family or her forest friends, and she fears that her friendship with Fable is too good to be true.

8. How she's helpful: Fifer wants to help Fable with her curse. She provides support and comfort whenever Fable is sad. Fifer also is asking her animal friends for any ideas on how to help her human friend.

9. What does she want most: To help Fable.

10. Crowd Sorecery Sentence(s): Fifer stood on the hilltop. It was windy, and she almost feared that her thin frame woud be blown completely away. She pushed her hair out of her eyes and continued to listen to the sparrow. He had arrived in a hurry, and she was eager to hear what he had to say. For you see, the sparrow was from the other side of the forest. And he had news for Fable.

I would also like to add to the What She Wants Most category that she wants to learn more aout her past. Since she has such a unique appearance, she wonders where she came from and who her parent were.

This is such an awesome website! I REALLY REALLY think Fifer could be a great companion for Fable, and it would be awesome if I made it to the finals. But I'm sure that's what every other person on here is thinking about their character also, so good luck to all of you!

NOTE: THIS IS NOT A CHARACTER SUBMISSION.

I vote we have two sidekicks, one to be Fable's friend and confidant, her own age(ish), and the other to be her mentor and "the man who discovers her talents", like Brooke E.'s Aeron Lemore. Most stories have that, think Ron and Dumbledore, or Sam and Gandalf.

Now, I am not the best of writers, or idea makers either. But still, I hope children look at this character and think of his funny, positive humor, but also his dark side.

1. Thero Backens

2. A boy, with darkish hair and a sly smile. Thero also has his trusty leather bag and cape.

3. He is an outcast from the land of goolia (yes, weird name). They kicked him out because of his crazy abilites and his frozen heart. Thero met Fable on a cold winter day, which I think is enough info.

4. He steals and trades his goods to others for a high price. (Weird for a funny and positive guy, but Thero does have a frozen heart.)

5. He doesn't really know what he thinks for Fable. He sometimes goes into a love mode, sometimes in rage mode, and sometimes in just plan sorrow mode. Thero's frozen heart has much to do with it.

6. He can turn into the shadows, hiding when he needs to. Good when he is stealing. He can't do anything else besides that, but is good with jokes.

7. I have been talking about his frozen heart. This is so important that I didn't even write it in number 2. Thero really only joined Fable because she wants her fame. He may change and may not. You never know with Thero.

8. A REAL good hider. Like I said, he can turn into the shadows and hide pretty well. He can go through any bar and chain. Thero can also help with people getting out of their bars and chains, as he can "magically grab the keys and unlock the bars and chains". AKA turning into the shadows and stealing the keys.

9. A good heart. And fame. He doesn't know he wants a good heart, though.

10. The shadows seem to move as he runs in the ally. As people walk on they don't notice that some of their change is missing, or that their most-amazing-thing-ever-that-noone-can-touch is gone as well. This is all the work of Thero Backens, and positive and stealing boy who only has his bag of goods, his dark shadows, and jet black cape as companions. Now, you would never know that is childish boy was soon going to befriend a strange writing girl, and defeat the evil villian. I will not get much more into details, as you will read all of it later on.

1. Name: Scrant (Lawrence Scranton Greyson)

2. Appearance: He has cropped wavy brown hair, deep brown eyes, light skin, and freckles.  He has a slightly messy appearance. He wears an oversized tattered coat, long pants and muddy work boots (he is poor, and cannot afford much better).

3. Background: Scrant grew up in a poor family. His family became ill and died when he was young, so Scrant was left to fend for himself, and live on the streets . He does not know of any other family he may have.

4. Trade: He does odd jobs, errands, and just about anything to earn enough money to survive.

5. Attittude towards protagonist: Although witty and charming, Scrant doesn't quite know what to make of Fable. Still, he finds himself close to Fable, and that he cares about her.

6. Strengths/ Special Abilities: Scrant himself thinks he has no special abilities, but he is wrong. He has ability to think on his feet. And although he doesn't know it he has magic, which will one day help him to break Fable's curse.

7. Secrets: Scrant doesn't know it at first, but Fable first story that she ever wrote was about him, so actually Scrant was created by Fable. She was the one who made his life miserable by making him poor and without a family.

8. How is the sidekick helpful: Using his charm and wit, Scrant helps Fable to be happy again, and to overcome her depression. But also Scrant will soon rescue Fable by breaking her curse. Even the heroine needs a hero sometimes.

9. What does the sidekick want most? Scrant wants freedom from his poor life.

10. Crowd Sorcery Sentence(s):

Scrant was angry, but mostly he was afraid. Five days ago he'd met Fable. Two hours ago he'd come to visit her because she'd spoken of her loneliness. One hour ago, his curiousity had gotten the better of him. He longed to know why. Why the mysterious girl always had her pen and paper. He'd asked her why, and she'd burst into fresh tears. Her blue eyes, if possible were even more beautiful when she cried as they stared into Scrant's brown ones. Then she explained what she called her curse. Now he understood. He hadn't then. He hadn't read her story yet. The story about him.

In the moments after he'd read that story he was confused. Fable had written the story about Scrant years before she'd even met him. How did she even know his name? Now he knew. She knew his name because she'd chosen his name. His family became ill because she wrote it, and it became true. She'd scibbled down that he hated his name, and he did. She made everyone call him Scrant. She made his hair and eyes brown. Fable had splashed mud on his boots, and had his coat ripped to shreds. Scrant knew he should be angry, but he wasn't somehow. He knew why. Fable had written that he would meet her and that he would learn of her curse. This wasn't why he wasn't angry.

Now, he knew that soon he would break her curse, and Scrant knew he would die trying. Scrant knew he should be angry, but he wasn't. He was scared. Afraid. This was why.

Name: Visily Morton

Apperance: Wispy blonde hair, magical looking eyes, and usually wears a dark-colored dress and slip-on or no shoes.

Background: It is a mystery who her parents were, which is one reason why Fable and her are best friends. She loves to explore, which probably comes from her parents. Her parents are probably always moving, which is why no one knows who or where they are.

Ocupation or trade: Visily is still a kid, but dreams of being an explorer when she is older.

Attitude towards main character: Fable and Visily are best friends. Visily is one of the only people Fable has big conversations with.

Strengths or special abilities: Visily can see things that are invisible. She is good at passing through places other people cannot get through. She is very good at exploring.

Fears, weaknesses, or secrets: Since Visily loves exploring, she gets lost easily. She sometimes cannot tell what is invisible and what is not. Sometimes it is hard for Visily to get out of the places she got into. She fears that her power will be stolen from her.

How sidekick is helpful: She helps Fable see invisible things coming her way.

What sidekick wants most: To explore the entire world.

My Crowd Sorcery Sentences: "Visily just had to see what was down that road. She didn't know why she hadn't explored it yet. There had to be something invisible to everyone but her down there. There just had to be."

1. Name: Astoria Neuraline (pronounced /æˈstoʊriə ˈnʊəʳəlaɪn/, or "ah-STOR-ee-uh NUHR-uh-line" if you don't know IPA or the symbols don't show up yon your computer). Her nickname is Aster--her mom's favorite flower, and the reason she was named Astoria--but Fable calls her Story.

2. Appearance: Medium-length brown hair, often braided with flowers in the braid. She only doesn't braid her hair when it is very ratty and tangled, so if you were to see her on a rare occasion without the braid (and/or the flowers; she sometimes puts flowers in her hair without the braid and often braids her hair without the flowers), her hair would look like a mess. Light brown eyes, but if you look closely at them you see flecks of greens and blues. She has pale skin and freckles. A bright dark red birthmark is on her right cheek, the bridge of her nose, and part of her chin, like a paint splatter.

3. Background: She was bullied as a child, and is very shy. Though she was well-off (I wouldn't say rich, but closer to rich than poor), her birthmark set her apart. But when she was at a low point in her life, she discovered a piece of Fable's writing that was accidentally dropped, and it inspired her and helped her through because she could relate to it so much. What she doesn't know is that she could relate to it because it created her problems by describing them.

4. Occupation or trade: Her mother was a healer, and she is supposed to follow in her footsteps; but she wants to be a poet or an artist.

5. Attitude toward main character: Admiring, yet somewhat disappointed; she had built up a sort of perfect girl who would completely understand her in her mind as being the author, and she is discovering that Fable has flaws. Yet she likes the real Fable too, and is maybe even developing a crush? Wink (You don't have to use that bit if you don't want to--I'd completely understand if you didn't. I just thought I'd throw it out there as a posibility, you know? Definitely don't use it as a basis for throwing out Astoria completely. I just know that often, admiration leads into crush or crush-like feelings and it might give Astoria more depth--or less.)

6. Strengths or special abilities: Strengths: She is loyal, kind, gentle, and empathetic. She thinks before she speaks, and tries to never cause harm, because she knows the power words can have, for good and for ill, unless she is very upset. Special abilities: She is a very good artist, and while her poetry is not as good, it has a certain quality of voice to it, of meaning, that is uniquely hers and makes you think, even if the poetry itself is awkward, with bad rhyme or rhythym. And it improves, of course, as she writes more of it. Also, she knows three languages fluently (including her and Fable's native language), which will probably come in handy at some point.

7. Fears, weaknesses, or secrets: Fears: Heights, failure, being judged (especially on her birthmark). Weaknesses: Mentally, she is naive, timid, and overemotional; physically, she is weak. Secrets: She knows something about Fable's backstory that not even Fable does, but keeps it hidden because she thinks that Fable would hate her for how she discovered it and/or think of her [astoria] as beneath herself [fable] due to the content of the secret.

8. How is the sidekick helpful? She shows Fable that her writing can do good things, she can speak two other languages, and is Fable's friend.

9. What does the sidekick want most? To feel happy and secure with herself despite her birthmark, and with others despite her fear that they are judging her.

10. Your Crowd Sorcery Sentence(s): Quietly, Astoria slipped out of her house and walked to her home. Her real home, surrounded by wildflowers and birdsong, where nobody was there to care that she was different. When she got there, a half-painted canvas and some scraps of poetry greeted her, but she ignored them in favor of a piece of paper hidden underneath them. Sitting down under a tree, she read it again, over and over. After a while, she put the paper down (she had the story memorized anyway) and began imagining the girl. Somehow, she felt like she knew that the girl would never judge her, that they could be best friends and it wouldn't matter that other people judged her because this girl with magic in her words wouldn't. Logically, she knew that she will probably never meet the girl again. But when has logic ever stopped a daydream?

[Sorry they're not very good, I'm not too great at introductions, especially short ones. Hopefully they helped give you an idea of the character though!]

Casey P, I love this character! I like her even more than I like my own. I think that saying she might be developing a crush on Fable was an excellent idea, and that it added a lot of depth to her character. I really hope that if Astoria wins for the sidekick, that this part is left in, because it adds a whole new element to the story, and I believe it is a positive element.

Name: Roon (RUNE)
