white elephant game!
white elephant game!
the holiday season is almost upon us, so i think it's time we bring back this gift-giving game :D i'll just copy and paste the directions from last year :p
Here's how this will work:
1. Under an alias, post a description of the wrappings of an imaginary gift by December 1st.
3. After December 1st, we will choose gifts in the order of description posted. I’ll post a list of the order we’ll be choosing in :)
4. When someone has chosen your gift, reply to them revealing what it is. It could be something real, such as a poem or drawing, or something imaginary, like a puppy or a jar of stardust. Also, reveal your identity!
5. Once you receive your gift, respond with a thank-you! That's only polite! :)
RULES:
- Post your gift description by December 1st
- Post under an alias, not your CBer name.
- Wrap your gift creatively!
- Don't reveal your own identity until someone claims your gift. If the gift you choose turns out to be a picturing or something else that requires your CBer identity, you can make an exception.
- Remember to post!
- Have fun!
I'll post my gift when this thread shows up :)
here's the link to last year's, in case you need inspiration/a demonstration on how it works: http://www.cricketmagkids.com/chatterbox/thismonth/node/558817

Sure, whatever you want me to know :D
(December 18, 2024 - 6:57 pm)
I guess I'll just give you my appearance
Tan skin, almond shaped dark chocolate brown eyes, a small nose, black hair that reaches to the middle of my back. I'm wearing a knitted navy-and-beige striped sweater and black leggings with fluffy slippers.
If you're describing the background, I really like being in the mountains, especially when its snowing and I'm skiing. I've been to Mexico, so I also love cenotes and secluded lagoons.
I have a chaotic personality and I am either deathly quiet with my head in a book (or ebook) or I'm talking so much and so loudly that everyone around me tells me to shut up.
You could preferably inclue my CAPTCHAE, Keela. She's a light grey chinchilla.

Cool :D I'll hopefully be able to write it soon because break started today
(December 20, 2024 - 6:55 pm)
Here you go :D Hopefully it's okay
The girl’s skis still scrape against the hill
but delicate snowflakes swirl through the air
clinging to the dark hair flying behind the girl
dusting it like sugar.
The girl slows, turns
a spray of snow announcing she has stopped
and she removes her helmet
looking at her companions.
Her warm brown eyes sparkle with excitement
words bubbling from her lips.
She unzips her pocket
a little nose and whiskers poking out
her hands coaxing a chinchilla into the open.
She holds the small body close to her chest
as it nuzzles her hands
and she smiles as a snowflake lands perfectly
on its nose.

OMG Amity! This is amazing! I love your vivid imagery!

Eee so many options... I think I'll go with stellar crystal's gift :)
(December 18, 2024 - 12:48 pm)
(December 18, 2024 - 5:15 pm)
You slowly open the gift, unraveling the bow and unfolding the snow-like wrapping. Hidden within is a small notebook with its cover being light blue with white snowflake decorations. You flip to the first page, and a small note is scribbled on top: Whatever story you want to be created, it shall appear on the page.
Basically you can give me a topic/prompt and I will write a short story/scene based on it! (Though it may take some time for the story to 'appear'.)
(December 18, 2024 - 7:06 pm)
Squee, thank you!! For a prompt, maybe "champion" or "opal"? If you find those uninspiring, tell me and I'll think of another one :)
(December 19, 2024 - 5:00 pm)
You write the words opal and champion on the space beneath the note, and suddenly, as if by magic, words appear, written in a fancy script with a wintery flair:
Holly felt the swirling snowflakes sting against her skin, with the wind howling as she struggled her way through the knee-deep snow, desperately trying to make her way to her village home. She had been out for a while, yet the sky had been perfectly clear and blue—until a sudden blizzard occurred, seemingly out of nowhere. She reached the door, opening the door and immediately shutting it behind her as she collapsed onto the carpet, feeling exhausted.
“Holly!” A frantic voice broke through the relentless wind. She turned over and realized that it was her friend, Stella. “Did you hear about what happened?”
“No, I didn’t. What’s up?”
“It’s the Winter Opal! It was…stolen!”
Holly remembered that the Winter Opal was a magical gemstone which was what kept balance of the seasons. Without the Opal, an endless winter would consume the land, Arctara, along with a relentless blizzard. “Stolen?” she repeated in shock. “By whom? And when?”
“A frost spirit,” Stella replied. “And it happened only about an hour ago! But what’s more is that…when the elders went to the Whispering Cave to receive guidance, they said that…you were to become the Champion—to recover the Opal and retrieve it from the spirit and restore balance to Arctara.”
Holly fell silent for a few moments, before saying, “Then I suppose I must. If I am to be the Champion.”
“But, Holly,” protested Stella. “It’ll be dangerous! With the blizzard out there and who knows what else…”
“I know you’re worried, Stella,” Holly responded. “I am too. But I must do this—or else all of Arctara could be trapped in a blizzard forever.”
Stella nodded, recognizing the resignation in Holly’s eyes. “Then stay safe, Holly. And return home, please.”
“I will,” answered Holly, before going out into the blizzard once more.
As she trudged through endless amounts of snow, she tried to think about why the frost spirit would steal the Opal. It must have intended to bring the world into chaos and destroy the balance of the seasons.
She knew when she was going in the right direction when the magic of the Opal felt strengthened within her, as if being deemed the Champion ignited a new sense within her. The frost spirit couldn’t have gotten far, and she made haste, clearing through the snow with ease.
Suddenly, she spotted a flash of something vaguely mist-like through the relentless blizzard. At once, Holly knew that it was the frost spirit. She pursued after it, as the spirit darted around a corner, disappearing into a small cave. Holly picked up her pace and chased after it, soon arriving at the cave and blocking the exit, with the ethereal, mist-like frost spirit trapped in the corner. It had a smooth tear-shaped iridescent gemstone shimmering with icy blues, whites, and silvers, giving off a faint, mystical glow—the Winter Opal.
“Frost spirit! Why did you steal the Opal?” Holly demanded. “To throw the world into chaos? To tip the balance of seasons?”
The frost spirit blinked its small, flame-like eyes, before saying in a voice that sounded like it came from the wintery world itself, “Quite the opposite. I’m using the Opal for its intended purpose in the world.”
“Which is?”
“To contain the ancient evil, of course,” the frost spirit replied calmly.
“The ancient evil?” echoed Holly in confusion.
“It is Vulcanis, the ancient fire spirit—wired for destruction of the whole world,” it explained. “To turn Arctara into dry deserts and lava. It is trapped in the Frozen Fortress right now, but not for long. And so if I use the magic of the Opal, Vulcanis shall be contained once more.”
“But if you use the Winter Opal on…Vulcanis, Arctara becomes an endless winter!” Holly countered.
The frost spirit appeared to shrug. “I do not mind a winter wonderland, though I do mind being baked into ashes. Now, will you please let me go?”
“No, not without the Opal,” Holly replied.
“Then I suppose that we are never leaving,” responded the spirit, appearing to relax. Yet in doing so, the frost spirit accidentally dropped the Opal.
In a flash, Holly picked it up, feeling its coldness yet warm glow in her hands. She sprinted out of the cave and back into the snow, leaving the frost spirit behind. Yet she could hear its warning echoing in her ears—if the Opal was not used, Vulcanis would be released. Yet if it were, then winter would be eternal.
Suddenly, the earth began to rumble beneath her feet. The snow began to feel less cold, melting away, yet she knew that this was not a good sign. This meant that Vulcanis was awakening.
Holly knew that she had to do something, although she was not sure what. For now, her feet seemed to have a mind of their own as she began to race in the direction of the Frozen Fortress, where Vulcanis was awakening. Eventually, she arrived, cautiously but swiftly entering the fortress where she could feel the heat growing more and more by the second.
Before she knew it, she was face to face with Vulcanis, which appeared in the form of a roaring flame with yellow sparks for eyes. It was already melting through its icy prison, leaving baked earth and lava in its wake. In the corner of her eye, she spotted an opal shape carved into the wall. If she merely placed the Opal in the wall, Vulcanis would be contained once more—yet the world would be trapped in eternal winter. Yet if she did not act now, Vulcanis would melt away the walls and cause destruction to Arctara. She was faced with an impossible decision, with no time to think.
Suddenly, somewhere within her, Holly realized the answer. It was balance. If she could somehow combine the Winter Opal with Vulcanis, then everything would return to normal.
In a burst of inspiration and impulsiveness, she threw the Winter Opal towards Vulcanis, and a bright light flashed, turning Holly’s vision white.
Holly made her way back to the village, with the snow already beginning to melt around her, giving way to fresh, spring grass beneath. Upon her arrival, Stella immediately came over, with anticipation in her expression.
“Did you catch the frost spirit?” Stella asked.
Holly told her the whole story, and when she finished, her friend nodded. “Wow. So…now you’ll return the Opal back to the Whispering Cave, correct?”
“Indeed,” Holly replied. “I’ll present it to the elders there.”
When she arrived at the Whispering Cave, the elders were already there, as if they were expecting her. Holly bowed low and explained her story once more, before showing them the Opal, which was no longer only wintery colors, but a balance between hot and cold, fiery red and icy blue. The Opal had become a balance, a harmony.
The elders ended up still keeping Holly as the protector of the newly named Harmony Opal, though she was no longer a Champion of Winter—instead, she was named the Guardian of Balance, to preserve the equilibrium between fire and ice. And from then on, seasons cycled on, changing not only between winter and summer, but also spring and fall, seasons of balance and harmony. Although the world was not perfect, it was whole again—a place where winter and flame could coexist, balance could reign, and life could always find a way to return.
