Chatterbox: In This Month's Issue
white elephant game!
white elephant game!
the holiday season is almost upon us, so i think it's time we bring back this gift-giving game :D i'll just copy and paste the directions from last year :p
Here's how this will work:
1. Under an alias, post a description of the wrappings of an imaginary gift by December 1st.
3. After December 1st, we will choose gifts in the order of description posted. I’ll post a list of the order we’ll be choosing in :)
4. When someone has chosen your gift, reply to them revealing what it is. It could be something real, such as a poem or drawing, or something imaginary, like a puppy or a jar of stardust. Also, reveal your identity!
5. Once you receive your gift, respond with a thank-you! That's only polite! :)
RULES:
- Post your gift description by December 1st
- Post under an alias, not your CBer name.
- Wrap your gift creatively!
- Don't reveal your own identity until someone claims your gift. If the gift you choose turns out to be a picturing or something else that requires your CBer identity, you can make an exception.
- Remember to post!
- Have fun!
I'll post my gift when this thread shows up :)
here's the link to last year's, in case you need inspiration/a demonstration on how it works: http://www.cricketmagkids.com/chatterbox/thismonth/node/558817

My gift is a list of book recs! Pretend I'm giving you the actual books, in deluxe editions... I could provide you with some different ones if these don't match your tastes :)
-Dungeons and Drama, by Kristy Boyce: a fun, hearwarming story of family and friendship
-The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street, by Karina Yan Glaser: the adventures and mishaps of the Vanderbeeker kids (plus it's a series)
-Roverandom, by J. R. R. Tolkien: a delightful fantasy story, and moreover it's by Tolkien :)
-What Mrs. McGillicuddy Saw, by Agatha Christie: a light holiday mystery
Hope you like them!

You pick up the gift and slowly liberate it from the mass of fairy lights. As you unroll it, the purple cloth comes off too until a green ball about the size of a watermelon is sitting on your lap.
No, scratch that. It’s floating a few inches above your lap, and unlike a watermelon, it’s radiating heat. It’s also very shiny, and very tingly. For a moment it also smells very wet and summery, so you flick it just to make sure it’s not a watermelon wrapped in metal. That would probably disappoint you.*
Ah. It doesn’t sound like there’s a watermelon inside. You thought so anyways. Moving on…
You notice a crack down the centre of the ball. Two plastic bags stuffed with metallic string and marbles or something are taped across the crack. You peel them off and pry open the ball.
Round beads of every colour glimmer like crystals or pomegranate arils. Some have letters or numbers printed on them. Others are covered with intricate designs and pictures that must have been painted with the tip of an embroidery needle, or are lightly dusted with glitter. A sliding glass panel over each half keeps them from spilling out.
You draw aside the glass panel and scoop up a handful. Your hand is stuck for a moment, as if underwater, then you draw it out. The surface of the beads are smooth, but easy to hold. When you slip them back into the case, they glow like sunsets or aurorae compressed into stars.
Dotted among the beads are larger charms in the form of miniature snow globes. You pull the other beads off of one of the charms and shake it gently. It’s a little Christmas tree, every branch scattered with tiny lights. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, it says on the base.

(Inspired by the Plum Pudding Model of the Atom, and also just atoms in general. If you want something that can be enjoyed outside of the imagination—unfortunately I don’t have a physical atom-inspired bracelet-making kit XD—or a refund because maybe you’re not interested in atoms and watermelon, let me know)
(Oh, and this is Lyric btw)

Your gift is a poem that I'll write for you :D I would prefer if you revealed yourself so I can make it more personalized, but if not, I'll just write about your alias :)
