The deadline for drawings is Thanksgiving (Nov. 24). If you or your partner cannot participate for some reason, Clouded Leopard and The Artist can take the place of a missing artist and Autumn Leaves or Applejaguar can take the place of a missing writer. Have fun y'all!

Awesome! I'm excited to read it.

Here it is. I think it's slightly better than my last one, because I had much more time to use on it. And this one is still kinda long, (I'm awful at writing short-short stories) but it's much better than the previous.

THE STORY

Skylar leaned her elbow on the bus window, staring out into the street. Her long brown hair fell into her eyes, but she didn’t brush it away.

She was thinking about her dad, who had been hurt by a bullet a few days ago. He had been flown home, and was in the hospital now. She hadn’t even seen him yet.

She was thinking about Christmas, which would likely be ruined because of it. She had been looking forward to finally having a normal Christmas, the first one since her dad had been deployed overseas. He was a doctor in the military, and this year was the first time he had been able to come home for Christmas since she was nine.

But now….

Skylar turned away from the window, letting her gaze wander around the school bus. It was nearly empty; her house was close to the end of the bus route. But she kept thinking about her dad. At least he had been able to come home. And maybe he would even be better by Christmas! It was still a week until then. She cheered up a bit. Yes! He would probably be home for Christmas regardless.

The bus pulled over in front of the bus stop, and Skylar lifted her backpack onto her shoulder. Then she zipped up her jacket against the cold and hopped off the bus.

She stepped into the house, which was oddly quiet. “Mom?” She called uncertainly. There was no answer. She pulled off her jacket, unlaced her boots, and dropped her backpack by the door of the mud room, then walked into the main part of the house.

~~~
Silent as a snowflake, Grief floated through the house. Currently he was in the shape of a bird, and his ash-grey feathers didn’t make a sound as he shook them out. Invisible to humans, he could inflict sadness upon them just by being in the area.
Quiet as a cat, Anger walked through the house. He preferred to assume the shape of a fox, though it really din’t matter since the humans didn’t see him. He could make the humans angry just by touching them—unfelt by them, of course. He quite enjoyed it. His foxy face curved into a mischievous grin as he tilted his ears and caught the sound of another human to impose on.
~~~

Skylar wandered into the kitchen, past the invisible bird and fox. There was a plate of her mom’s gingerbread on the table—with a note. Her mom must’ve put it there. She picked it up, curious, and unfolded it.

Skylar,

Am going to go see Dad in the hospital. They called me, and he isn’t any better. I’m sorry, dear, but it looks like he won’t be able to be home for Christmas.

Skylar read it several times to make sure she was seeing it right.

It looks like he won’t be able to be home for Christmas.

She swallowed several times, trying to gulp back the sobs that were rising in her throat. A tear slowly rolled down her cheek—then another, and another. They were hot, angry tears, influenced by Anger and Grief, who were right next to her.

It was all ruined! She had been so excited to finally have a normal Christmas, with Dad home. But now he wouldn’t even be there….

She raised her sleeve to wipe away her tears, but then realized she was still holding the note. She crumpled it into a ball and threw it into the trash, then ran off to her room with the tears still flowing down her face.

~~~
On Christmas Eve, Skylar carried her presents for her mom and dad down to their tree. She hesitated for a moment before putting her dad’s present under the tree, but then shoved it under anyway. Then she hugged her mom and ran up to bed.
Around 11:30, she got up to get some water. She had been tossing and turning for a while, not able to go to sleep.
Her mom was still downstairs, probably putting the last presents under the tree. Skylar was just about to get back into be when she heard the doorbell ring. Her mom’s voice floated up the stairs. “What one earth….” Skylar heard her open the door. “Jack!” Then she heard a deep laugh. That—that was her dad’s voice!
She ran down the stairs as fast as she could. Then she sprinted towards the door.
“Dad!” She hugged him. He was pale and thin, and trembled a bit when she ran into him, but he folded her into a hug so deep and warm that she didn’t even think about it. He was home for Christmas, and that was all that mattered.
Ohmygosh, Leafpool! It turned out so well, I love it! The two pieces fit together really well. Thank you for being my partner in this!
<3 Thanks. :)
I thought about having it be about romance, like Skylar had a crush on somebody and her friend also liked him, etc. etc. etc., but it seemed too weird and it just didn't fit the picture. (Literally, haha)
We still might get eliminated, just because my and Scylla's score was so low for the last round, (we just barely missed getting eliminated, we were at the very bottom of the not-eliminated list) but at least we will have tried, right?
O.O
She might have given up on this because she's leaving. Excuse me while I go yell at her to get back here and finish. Otherwise I'll enlist Coco for you (if that's alright) to make the story.
@People Without Artists
It's probably too late, but anybody can use my picture for their story. Daisy is not doing it anymore. (Does anyone want to be my new partner?)
Well, Cho volunteered me instead of Daisy at some point along the line. Without my knowledge or assent. :/ But I will volunteer anyway, but just a warning; I have never attempted writing things that are real and not fantasy, so you can assume I'll be horrible at it (that way whatever I do will probably reflect better on your expectations XD). If you would like me as a partner then OK, great! But if not, I totally understand. (me being the inexperienced writer with writing realistic things, now you know what it means to have one's head in the clouds. I think . . . ?)
