I just found out that I'm Clara in The Nutcracker! I'm so excited!!!

Oooh, congratulations! I'll be playing my violin for our community production of it in December. And I'll think of you, Ivy.

I just started ballet this year, and I really like it. I'm not that good, though. Does anyone have any tips on how I can become a better dancer? I love to dance.

My advice would be to listen well to your teacher and to listen to appropriate dance music often to help develop your musicality, how well you dance with the rhythm and express its feeling.

Like Admin said, listen to you teacher! When s/he  gives you a correction, try and apply it immediately. Also, when they give other people corrections, take them as you own! And of course, always work as hard as you can.

If you need more advice about ballet in general, or about something in particular, just let me know! I'd be happy to help!

My teacher tells us to work on one thing at a time. So, if you're like me and need to improve your spotting on chaines (is that the right spelling?), not looking down at the floor on across the floors or whipping your arm on pirouttes, just choose one thing to work on for the first class. Next time you come, continue to work on the previous week's improvement and add another. Also, remember that it takes time and practice to become good at something!

On another note, I have a ballet dilema! My poor, poor pointe shoes are so worn out that they are falling apart. The satin is ripped at the bottom so that I can see the skin of my arch. If I push my finger on the box, it bends down and the shank (right word?) is so worn I can bend it so that the heel touches the box. (I'm still able to go up, but they are definitely past the broken in point.) I already have new pointe shoes, but I decided not to wear them until after Thanksgiving because if I don't wait, the new shoes will be like my current pair by February for the concert. I dance on pointe 4.5 hours a week plus a bit more when we begin dress rehearsal, so I'll dance close to 40 hours before the show! I can't let my new pair get over broken in, but I need to work them so that they are usable and comfortable. I can't get another pair of pointe shoes before the show or else they'll be too hard. So, what am I suppsoed to do?

Well, the best possible situation would be for you to get another pair to wear between the pair you have now and the pair for the show. But unfortuatly, I also know that pointe showed are annoyingly expensive for something that you wear out so quickly. You probably shouldn't be dancing on them because they sound like they are at the point ( no pun intended!) where they are dangerous. Is it possible for you to not dance on pointe for a while? Or at least until you think the others won't die? Another dilemma is, are your shoes going to last through the show. My shoes died awhile ago, so my teacher had me get two pairs, much to my parents delight. She was worried that I would make it to the show (which is in three weeks. Ahhh!), but that my shoes would die in the middle. So here's what I think your options are:

1: Buy another pair for the show

2: Don't dance on pointe until you're closer to the show.

Hope this helped!

Since I only have one pointe class before Thanksgiving, I'll just wear slippers for that. Then, I guess I'll wear my new shoes after Thanksgiving. I wish my shoes died closer to Christmas. I'll probably end up needing a new pair. Thanks!

@Ivy

Because of extra practices for our show, I have been on pointe hours more than my feet are used to.  So, the skin on my pinky toe and just below have been getting blisters and have been popping. How do you protect that part of your foot while dancing? I have tried putting a band aide over the spots, but they usually fall off. I also put moleskin on the pointe shoes to avoid the rubbing.

Maybe try using toe tape instead of a bandaid. You could wrap it across the top of your foot so it stays better. The tape I use is really squishy and awesome. They sell it at Discount Dance, but I would get it at a regular store becasue it's cheaper. The one I buy is called Nexcare Absolute Waterproof Tape. Other than that, I have no idea. I wish I could be of more help!

On another note, I did my first ever triple pirouette on pointe tonight! I literally screamed!

I'll look for some. Thanks!

That is awesome. I am still trying to perfect doubles.

I'm still trying to perfect doubles too! That's why I couldn't believe it when I did three.

I'm at the audition for the American Ballet Theater Summer Intensive right now.  I'm a little nervous, but I'm just going to do my best. And we'll see what happens!
