This is good Indigo! If you're in the Valley of Shadows, where the Darken Stone is, then you can pretend that Ethyi never passed the Rhyming Voices test. She thought she found the Darken Stone, meanwhile the shadows of the Valley tricked her, since she never passed the test. If you want to do that, that is.

Voices suddenly whispered into Duvessa's ear.

A girl, a dove, a wildcat; all shadow. We play tricks on the mind, and we did our favorite when these three things came upon the meadow. Does she find the stone, does she take it? If she does, then perhaps this world will go down, lit...

With flames.

Ethyi hauled herself to her feet, pulling herself over to the gray stone. She touched it, turned it over. When her mark lay flat on the stone , for a moment it shimmered blue. Her mark tingled and burned . A whisper of wind hissed past her hair, and Ethyi almost heard words in it :

Black, she shan't live long,

silver, she wishes it be,

it naught, she's hitting ground !

Ethyi dropped the stone, spun around. The breeze was right: she glimpsed the gleam of swords and claws, eyes and teeth . An arrow whizzed by- Ethyi felt the wind lift a strand of hair from her head. Ethyi ran as fast as she could with her limp , zigzagging to avoid the arrows. She tripped, her good foot stuck in a dip in the ground. She tried to pull herself up and run, but she could hardly stagger along with both feet hurt . She felt a hand grasp her shoulder and knew she was done for.

i start school tomorrow. i am going to middle school for the first time and I am super scared.

Thero~

i woke up in a dark space, full of spiders and skeletons. I brushed off dust on my pants, wincing as a chain pulled at my neck. I couldn't transform. For once I was truly helpless. I breathed heavily, wondering what was going to happen now.  I shuddered at the skeleton in the corner. And the darkness didn't help. For once, fear over took me. Captains weren't suppose to be jailed. Shadows weren't suppose to be caught. Were the shadow gods** punishing me, for the distractions the let me unaware? I heard footsteps, and light burned my eyes as the door pushed open. The Fairen leader came in, a sly smile appearing on his face. "So" he whispered, "We caught the little scrum of a captain, hmm? The shadow leader." He said "leader" like it was the worst word in the world. I snarled. "You-" I felt a whip reach my back, slicing pain through my body. This wasn't happening. It wasn't.

Duvessa studied the Darken Stone. It looked like one whole stone, but up close, it had cracky lines in it, as if it had been broken, then put back together. Voices whispered to her, after a few moments of her studying the Darken Stone.

In chains, in a cave.

He is captured, and will probably be used as a slave.

But will he escape? Will he make it out?

Perhaps he won't, if he keeps growling and yelling things from his wolfish snout.

Thero~

The leader chuckled. "So, you are caught, aren't you, hmm? Just to tell you, you are gonna be exicuted TODAY. Yooooourrr welcome." A guard pushed me and led me outside. The light burned my eyes. It seemed like everyone was gathered for the death of a shadow. I winced at the leers and sneers that filled the crowds and buried my soul. i saw a rope dangling above me. They were going to hang me. I winced once more. But then, a chance of escaping came to me. The guard tripped and fell down. He let go of my chains and I turned into a shadow. Soon, everyone was screaming and I ran through the mess and into the forest. I was out. I was out. And I would get revenge.

Duvessa's eyes snapped open as voices started to whisper.

He has escaped, now he plans their demise. Will he trick them with his lies? Duvessa's eyes narrowed as she listened. Then a question surfaced, a question she had been meaning to ask for a while.

" How do you know all of this?" Duvessa asked aloud, even though there was no one there. She knew otherwise.

We see all, and tell those who need to know. We always know if thou is friend, or foe.

~ Ethyi ~

What was with that dream ? Was it real ? I shook my head. Just the Nightlanders , the shadows , Thornwood, effecting me. DarkDove flew over to me, then past me. I raced after her. She lead me through the forest. Finally, DarkDove, the wildcat and I reached her destination. A wall- THE wall. The Twilight Wall. I could leave ! I could Cross and leave this life in the forest behind me, to forget, to never think of again. I sighed. I could never forget this. I limped back and forth. I could try, see if I could forget. At least, to get food. I scaled the wall with new agility, forigen ease of climbing . DarkDove and the wildcat followed me. Slipping past the dozing gaurds, I dropped onto the roof of a house. DarkDove and the wildcat merged into my shadow as I slid down. I dropped into the dirty streets of the slumbering Hallowian .

~ That Morning ~

Dawn found me half-hidden in a nook in the Twilight Wall. I winced at the stink as I pulled myself up. The slums of Hallowian felt as forigen as the forest first had. Later , though, I had grown used to the piney, fresh scent- but not the secrets . I shuddered and hurried away through the light rain that was falling. I'm not going to think about that .

I spent the morning looking for the familar market square where I had performed, my boarding house, anything. Feeling wet, lost, and scared, I decided to get something to eat. After looking around awhile, I found a small stall of fresh pies, owned by a small girl about my age. I was so hungry ... the pies were fresh... I had no money... I grabbed two and ran. The girl chased me, on and on and on through the rain. I glanced back over my shoulder, and I saw she had a dagger in her hands. Eventually, she got me pushed up againest the Twilight Wall. She held out her dagger, reaching for my throat, snarling. . . I twisted her arm and grabbed the dagger. " Gaurds ! " She called . I shimmied up the wall . Up on the wall, the gaurds sprinted at me, but I leapt off the wall and hit the ground running.

~ Later ~

I slumped againest a tree, playing with the dagger and gobbling the last crumbs of the pies. I had no idea what to do , but whatever I do I can't go back .

I am a shadow now.

Duvessa walked around the black trees, listening intently, for the voices that would be heard, and sometimes wouldn't be there. They would talk to her every day. She tried to make conversation with them, but they wouldn't talk to her very much. One day, she didn't hear them at all, until the words they said froze her dead soul.

The day still draws near.

~Euphelia~

The Silver pack was my sworn enemy. I had just spent two lonley nights all alone, waiting for Thero to return. When he finally came back to the camp, he looked so tierd and hungry that I gave him every one of the razzberries that I had left. He took them greatfully, and devoured them in just a muinete. "Euphelia, I must tell you something, child. A long, long time ago..." So I just sat there next to the fire, hugging my knees and rocking back and forth as Thero told me the fable. Now I knew why I was instructed to do such terrible things to the Silvers, and why I was so severely punnished for doing them wrong, or finding a loophole. We had to get the amulet!

I was so perplexed by the story that I had to go out alone. I told Thero that I was out picking berries, which was true. But I left out the part about sneaking to the silver camp, and getting very dirty. Strike 1 and 2. I reached the very edge of the huge Silver camp, when I heard what I was looking for. There were about four children, about 6 or 7, Gathered around another child, who was obviousley pretending to be an elder. He was telling them a story. I settled down in the bushes, and listened to the little boy. He was telling the Fable! But the story sounded so different! This time, the Blacks were the enemy! The Silver queen had won the battle, and gotten the amulet, but the black King had stolen it for his own, then been plunged into darkness by the protesting amulet, which had given the queen her revenge. It was all so complex that I started to mix up the stories in my head. It was one crazy mess, but I was one of the only 3 people in the world who knew what had really happened. But then it occored to me. I was the only person still alive to know what had happened. The king and queen were dead. Knowing all this was Strike 3.

~Aeriel~

Back again.

After the soldiers from Nerien showed up and found me, they took me back to Nerien. I spent the last few hours until dawn at the Yellow Rose Inn and Tavern, asleep (did I mention I'm exhausted?). A carriage from Fairen showed up to collect me the next day. Upon my return to Ivory Manor, I was smothered with kisses from my mother and scolding from my father, though I know he didn't mean it. There are definitely good things about being back: food, safety, warm clothes. But there is one thing that makes me pay for those comforts many times over. That is the knowledge that, had my parents known my secret, they would never have welcomed me back. They would have disowned me, imprisoned me, perhaps even killed me.

This thought, this guilt fills my mind as I sit in the ducal box at the town-square-turned-amphitheater, waiting for the execution. The mood is one of excited apprehension. The people- including me- don't know whether to be glad of a shadow's demise, or in mourning for the death of a fellow human. Fairen is just as white as I remember it, except now it reminds me of bones and snow instead of bright purity. Oh, if those shadows could see me now! Sitting in comfort and a resplendent new dress, white velvet to match the snow on the edges of the square. It makes me feel absurdly lucky, almost too much so. I could just as easily be that shadow being dragged into the square...

Wait a minute. That shadow. It's him!! The leader! The one who captured and recaptured me! He's dressed in a prisoner's sackcloth, his weapons are gone, and he has a new cut across his face, but I feel sure I'd recognize him anywhere. I see him glance up at the hastily constructed gallows tree, fear contorting his visage in a fashion unfamiliar to me. But it would appear that even a townful of guards and a controller as heir to the coronet can't get this one down: A blur of black leather boot later, his escort's been tripped and the shadow is out and away. The bodyguards standing with us immediately draw their halberds, ready for battle as a black wolf leaps out of the square, over the heads of several screaming people.

The entire scene is chaos. People are howling bloody murmur everywhere, the guard who led the shadow-man is getting to his feet, and Captain Merim himself is out on his horse and trying (without success) to calm everyone down. But it's the last thing the shadow did, before he bounded into the woods, that has me so unnerved. In the last instant of his being human, he'd locked eyes with me...and smiled. Smiled, as if to say, I know who you are. I know where you live. I know who you love. And I'm going to get you back.
