Random Thoughts/Things?

Random Thoughts/Things?

I wasn’t really sure what to call this thread, but I’ve had this idea floating around in my head for awhile now. Basically, anyone can post anything here. Any random thought you have, any random thing that happens to you, any random question that pops into your mind. Have fun, and don’t be afraid to be random.

welcome to the Midwest, where everything is cornfields and always has been.

Tell me about it... I live in the Midwest and it's just corn and wheat fields for miles and miles. The only good part is that I live on a farm with lots of animals (well, lots is an overstatement, but you get the point)

when i was little, we moved basically across the entire country, in a car, for over a week, and crossing through the midwest was like...

why did they think we needed so much corn.

SERIOUSLY, THIS IS TO MUCH CORN

who is using up so much corn that an entire region of america is needed to provide backup corn

AND WHY IS EVERYTHING SO FLAT

I live in California; my part of the state at this time of year is mostly fields of grapevines and dry yellow grass, until the grass becomes not-dry green grass that looks so soft in the spring, but dries out by the beginning of June.

I think it's all because of the masses of corn syrup, cornstarch, and other corn products that make their way into food products all over the place, like candy. Which is a large part of the reason my family always checks the ingredients on everything.... we make sure to only eat organic, non-GMO stuff as otherwise we get indigestion and also we don't want to expose ourselves to the pesticides on non-organic corn. At least cornfields look pretty. (although I can see how they'd get monotonous.)

In addition, a lot of the corn grown in Illinois is feed corn for pigs and other animals. And in central Illinois we also grow a lot of soybeans.

...which is a fantastic example of why mass meat production and consumption can be bad for the environment; It's massively inefficient using so much energy and resources to grow crops for and raise livestock, rather than growing crops for human consumption. The meat industry is a significant contributor to carbon emissions, while also decreasing the amount of food available to us globally.

Exactly!! That's one of the main reasons my family doesn't have a dog - think of all the meat being consumed by dogs all over the US >:( We still eat meat on some days of the week, though, because we really need it from a nutritional standpoint, but we try to buy it responsibly, and we buy as much locally-sourced meat as possible (which tastes so much better!)

argh i thought it was an n, and now it turns out it was an h. Iffy please try to be more coherent~
