But Raoul was so, so... two-dimensional and boring!

They all are! For Heaven's sakes, nobody can create a guy that isn't predictable and ultra-normal. If it's a story with a female lead character, he's either stereotypical California dude, or dark-skinned, Latin accented Prince Caspian. Rocky love story and eventual happily-ever-after ensues. If it's a story with a male lead character, then he meets this cool, role-model, old-brother type teenage guy who's all easy-going, friendly, good-humored, etc. Then the perfect guy turns out to be working for the villain, and the first guy gets torn apart until the wise old man or whoever gives him that whole you're-beginning-to-find-out-who-your-real-friends-are talk.I'm not physic; it's just that everything is so... well, to use TNO's (where is the option button??!!) words, two-dimensional and (fifty percent of the time) boring. When we can actually predict the next chapter of a novel word-for-word, there's a shortage of originality.

*growl* Phantom of the Opera had good characters. *hugs Erik* And not every story is like that... For example take Jurassic Park. Gooooooood book, Malcolm was AWESOME. *hugs Malcolm, too* "You egomaniacal idiot... You think you can destroy the planet? My, what intoxicating power you must have... You can't destroy this planet. You can't even come close." lulz. *hugs Michael Crichton*

Um... Fiyero! From Wicked! He was quite original... Actually come to think of it all of Gregory Maguire's characters were unpredictable. Except Galinda, of course, but she's supposed to be predictable. And Fiyero/Elphie certainly wasn't cliche... green girl and winkie prince, and Fiyero ended up dead and Elphie went mad and then melted.

I just... Didn't like Raoul much. Childhood sweetheart, rich, etc. and he always came off as kinda... condescending towards Christine. In my opinion, anyways.

Christine, Erik, and Raoul from Phantom of the Opera, and why Christine/Erik = my OTP. Also, stereotypical male characters.

Uhhh . . . who are Raoul and Erik and Christine?!?

Anyhoo.  I agree completely with TNO, Mary, and Poetonearth13.  But I can't say too much here because I've only read the first book, and I don't know what happens after that . . . though judging by everyone's posts, there seems to be something--uhh, indecent--about the last two books, am I correct?

I don't know who they are either! Yeah, I've heard that about indecency too.

They're characters from a different story. We... er... kind of got off topic.

Raoul, Christine, and Erik (alias the Phantom) are from an entirely different, much better work of fiction, The Phantom of the Opera. The Raoul, Christine, and Erik that I have been talking about are the ones from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.

I'm sorry, TNO (umlat!!!), I have to say that almost (as in 80% or so) of male characters in books are predictable. As though to prove my point exactly, yesterday I finished the first Percy Jackson and the Olympians book. Luke. Turned out to be a maniacal bad guy. Chiron encourages Percy after the devastating shock. I'm telling you, it was so predictable.
