Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

Poetry Contest

Poetry Contest

Well, we haven't had one of these in a while, have we? Time for a new one, I say! Welcome, resident poets!

The rules are pretty simple. I am the first judge. I will give you a theme, and you must write a poem relating to the theme. Be creative with your interpretations! I will then judge the entries by a set date, and the winner will then be the next judge, and set the next theme. And so on, and so forth.

The first theme will be... *dramatic drumroll*

Stars! Whether you chose to write about the kind of stars you wish on, or the kind that take the stage, I will be eagerly awaiting your sparkly, shiny, beautiful poems. Have them in by... Saturday, March 18. Two weeks. Sound fair?

I hope to see your poems soon!

Ahh thank you!! I really had no idea where this was going to go (I wrote it in ten minutes on my phone under the desk in French class) but I've had the concept sitting in my head for a while so I decided to go for it!

I totally agree with you, about the whole 'Orpheus turning around' thing. Tbh this perspective was inspired by Doubt Comes In from Hadestown (which I saw a few months ago!! it was amazing!!!). I thought it made a lot of sense for his character to be very hesitant and nervous- I would be too, in that situation.

Lol, no way, that's kinda hilarious! Such a brilliant poem, just scribbled out in a few minutes under a desk XD

mm this is really really late so if you didn't see it in time it's fine feel free to disregard it :)

behind me

your eyes: only meet mine for seconds at a time but it’s enough for me to notice

everything: the exact

shade & size & shape you’re

beautiful but then I turn back around with a blush

flowering across my cheeks & nose like roses in bloom. your eyes:

on the back of my head. I’m grateful for the masks we are forced to wear

you can’t see the scarlet painting my face beneath its skin

your eyes: the ghost of them never really left, I think

I can still feel them sometimes, when night drops the edge of her cloak over the sky

only the roses printed on the blankets stand to bear witness

they haunt me.

maybe I’ve spent too much time on this.

I'm so sorry everyone, I forgot I was judging!

honorable mention: Lumi!

what a quick and cute poem! I like the way you broke up the lines; it adds to the embarrassment and nervousness of the situation. I also like how you show the immediate reaction versus the overthinking later on and the shift of emotions that happens.

third place: peppermint!

I like the somewhat simple imagery and style to this one- it calls attention to both the overall message and the smaller details, and fits the mood perfectly. This was a very clever direction to go with the prompt; it's an idea that can cause so many emotions for different people, and you allowed for a wide range of reactions.

second place: Jaybells!

This poem is so dark and distinctive. The mood is so foreboding and it's very thought-provoking- it sounds like some epic origin story, but I can't help but wonder if it's the orgin of a hero or a villain. It captures the finality of leaving things behind and the freedom of starting new while also creating a chilling mood.

first place: Silver Crystal!

This was a brilliant use of a myth for the prompt. It feels so tense and nerve-wracking; the atmosphere is perfect for creating sympathy for a character whose decision seems so unwise. Putting the reader in Orpheus's shoes with such beautiful descriptions that create such a vivid and stressful scene is extremely smart and makes this poem work so well.

ME AND YOU

Me and you,

Not one,

But two,

I watch,

I wait,

Cuase you might be late,

But soon you'll see,

It's just you and me.

I tried to show my real feeling about covid and stuff. My brother and I have been alone with our parents for 3 years!!!!!!!
