The dice clattered

Chatterbox: KYNGDOM™ RP Board

The dice clattered

The dice clattered on the table, Felix looking down at them lazily. The tavern around him was full of cheery laughter and talk, the lamps dim. It was midnight, and instead of sleeping, Felix was here, trying to make some extra cash.

"Doubles again, I guessed right!" Felix exclaimed, "Hand over the money!"

His opponent, a serious-looking young woman rolled her eyes and slid a pile of gold coins over. Felix grinned with satisfaction as he swept the gold coins into his purse with a pleasant clinking. "Pleasure!" he said, giving a small bow to the woman, before skipping out into the night.

Felix whistled to himself as he strolled through the streets of Paralia. The air was mild and warm, and Felix was perfectly happy to stay here and make some extra money while he figured out how to travel without getting shot by the Resistance or Catastrophe's army.

The quaint storefronts were mostly closed, with wooden boards covering the windows for the night. It wasn't quite safe anywhere anymore, but Felix could live with that, it was fine.

Felix turned a corner, and almost tripped over a tent stake.

Jumping up, Felix looked around curiously. A lime green tent was tacked to the ground, that had definitely not been there the day before. He looked up at the sign. It read 'Millie's Fortune Telling' in garishly painted rainbow letters.

Ooh! Fortune telling! Wonder how much it costs?

With not an ounce of hesitation, Felix ducked inside the tent.

Inside, it was dark, and Felix caught the strong scent of peppermint. Peculiar photos with bullet holes shot through them, and playing cards, and strange things hung from the velvet walls of the tent. A hooded figure sat at a lime green table, on which stood a single foggy crystal ball.

"Hey! What's that?" Felix greeted, pointing curiously at a certain photo, which seemed to be of a white flower, that looked unexplainably wrong.

"Nothing," the hooded figure said, "Why are you here?"

Felix shrugged. "You're a fortune teller, right?"

"Duh."

"Alright, can you tell me my fortune?!"

"It costs two coins."

Felix drew two coins from his purse, and flicked them at the fortune teller. He could've sworn that they rolled their eyes, if he could've seen their eyes.

"Alright," they said, leaning forward and placing their hands on the crystal ball, "look into the crystal ball and tell me what you see."

Felix stared into the white crystal ball. A speeding horse broke through the fog, dashing through the crystal ball, until suddenly, it keeled over, and was replaced with a white flower, sprouting from its body. The white flower swirled through the mist, growing larger and larger and larger, but then–a sudden gunshot rang out, and the crystal ball went blank.

"I saw a horse! And a white flower! And then I heard a gunshot! What does the gunshot mean?"

"The horse means you'll be traveling a lot. The white flower means regret. And the gunshot ..."

The hooded figure jumped up, and poked their head outside the tent. "The gunshot means it's time to leave."

With a swirl of green mist, Felix stumbled back, outside the tent, and watched as it folded itself up, into a tiny velvet package, and darted down an alleyway.

Felix got up, a little disorented, and looked around. People were running, and the clang of metal and sounds of fighting drifted towards him. Something had happened.

Definitely time to leave, Felix thought, pocketing the picture of the white flower he had stolen from the tent, and slipping down a side street. Paralia had fallen to fighting. It was time to do some traveling.

Thanks! It was nonsense tbh XD

Ghost~

I peer into the bushes.

"Oh, gods I just remembered something...I won't be very welcome here...I fought for Catastrophe a couple of months ago...thank god for my shifting powers..I can't do my human form, or they'll recognize me. My raven form isn't welcome either- oh GODS I always have that mark, I'll have to cover- never mind. I think we should walk in and ask for help..."

I shift into a human, with shimmering purple hair and silver eyes, with a small moon-star mark on the side of my cheek.

"Let's see what I can remember. The Drifter Outpost is a Resistance camp. Golden must have been captured, because from what I can deduce from the mark on the ship, her captors and new masters or whatever are pro-Catastrophe. Let's get going then."

Kit~~

My eyes slowly crack open, and I expect to hear the sounds of gunshots, to smell food, and to see the thin rays of sunlight passing through the window. But it is silent, and still nighttime. Animal Eyes is asleep on the cot next to me.

I close my eyes and try to fall back asleep, but my attempts are useless. I decide that I might as well check on the patients, and I slowly stand up, careful not to make noise. My footsteps are quieter than those of a nymph.

The main hall of the hospital has an almost eerie emptiness to it. I had thought there were always at least several nurses on duty, but I guess I was wrong. Either that, or something else was wrong.

Unsurprisingly, every hallway that I walked through smelled of death. Even so, it was odd that every door reeked. After a while of walking, the persistence of the smell began to feel decidedly incorrect.

"I'll just check one room," I whispered to myself. "I'm sure everything will be fine." I reached for the nearest doorknob and mentally prepared myself. The door squeaked as it slid open, and a hand flew to my mouth in shock. My nostrils and lungs burned from the odor of decay.

Every single patient and every single nurse in the room was dead, with a bloody red smile across their necks.

Bodies lay on the floor, pools of red around them, which I carefully stepped over. After surveying the room for far too long, I turned and ran out of the room. I checked all the nearby rooms, and all of them were the same.

The only room that hadn't been attacked was the one I was in.

Which meant it was next.

I sprinted down the hallway, forgetting entirely the attackers were still in the hospital. It wasn't until I heard distant voices that I remembered, and panic flooded my body.

Thankfully, my instincts kicked in and I darted into a room just as a group of uniformed soldiers turned down the hallway. I peered out through the crack between the partially closed door and the wall, watching them. They wore red-and-black uniforms--Catastrophe's soldiers, then. They paused directly outside of my hiding spot.

"Huh," One of them began. "Thought I heard footsteps over here."

"Hm. Well, tell me when you start seeing ghosts peeking around the walls," The other soldier growled. "Come on. Let's go deal with that last room and get the Claaws out of here."

"No!" I cried, leaping from the room. I drew the wickedly sharp knife from my pack and managed to cut one of the soldier's arms. They cursed loudly, and I managed to pull their pistol from their grasp.

The other soldier rushed towards me and I fired the gun without thinking. Thankfully for my sanity, the shot wasn't lethal. The bullet buried itself in their thigh and they fell.

The soldier who I'd cut with my knife--which was now in their hand, due to my ill-planning--forced themself to their feet. Fury was in his eyes.

Before I had time to react, he lunged at me with the knife. I ducked to the side and it skimmed across my forearm, leaving an ugly red slice. The gun fell from my hands and clattered onto the tiled floor.

Just as he was about to attack me again, a gun fired from behind me. The knife-soldier fell to the ground, a red rose blossoming over top of his heart. I turned to see Animal Eyes, a gun in his hands. He lowered it when he saw me.

"We have to leave, now," He said.

"Yeah, I figured as much. Are there any survivors?" We began to run down the halls.

Animal Eyes nodded. "Yeah, everyone in the room got out. I thought you were dead."

We fell into silence, the only noise the sound of us running.

Oh SKIES I'm so sorry I'm so late! Also wait, I'm confused - did Goldenfeather join the Resistance or Catastrophe?

~Silverwhisker

"Wait - you worked for Catastrophe? Why would you - never mind. Not the time. So you think they'll be fine with it if you just walk in? Or are you going to hide your mark?" It's hard to hide my skepticism. "This might be our only chance to rescue Golden. We can't mess it up."

Ghost~

I cringe internally.

"yes. Of course."

"I have to hide my mark."

"It was because..."

"Because I was naive."

"Because I was foolish."

"Because I was young."

"And most of all? Because I could have a chance to explore."

I turn around.

"I'm sorry. I can't go."

"I'll mess it all up..."

"Again."

"Wait - I didn't mean you shouldn't - I can't do this by myself!"
Ghost doesn't say anything.
"Ghost, please. I don't blame you, and I know you're different now. It'll be fine. Aren't the Resistance people supposed to be all nice and stuff?"
Finally she turns back towards me. "Not always. Everyone has their faults."
I search desperately for something to convince her. Then I hear something - soft footsteps. Coming towards us. "Wait, do you hear that?" I ask Ghost.

(Hey, so Chasm, my other character, is going to join the Resistance side!)

Ghost~

"Y-yes..."

I turn around and see a boy I recognize. Silver fox ears...black and silver-

"Chasm?"

"Ghost. Nice to see you again. Who's this?"

"T-this is S-silverwhisker...please, don't tell the Resistance people I'm here..."

Chasm steps forward.

"Ghost, I would never give you away. In addition to that, where's Goldenfeather? Your little friend?"

"G-goldenfeather's on the other side. S-she thought we had betrayed her."

"I'll take you to the camp."

"No, no, no, they won't listen, no, they'll just put me in bars again!" I cry, shaking my head furiously.

~Silverwhisker

I glance back and forth, confused. "Wait. So you two know each other, right?"

Ghost nods wordlessly.

"Okay. Can we trust him?"

She nods again, while Chasm watches quietly.

"So Chasm, we need to find our friend Goldenfeather and... I don't know. Convince her to come with us, I guess. But apparently Ghost can't go or - wait, Ghost, if they trap you, can't you just transform into something smaller and slip through the bars? How would they hold a shapeshifter?"

Yup! Pretty much yeah!

Ghost~

I wince.

"They...found out ways...they've found a serum that d-disables my p-powers...a-and they'll recognize me. I was never the strongest mentally..."

Chasm smiles warmly. "Alright then. I can help. Just don't forget about me this time, alright?"

The look on my face probably is one of shock. "You thought I f-forgot about you? H-how- W-why? I- w-we c-came back t-to the forest, y-you had d-disappeared, w-we spent days and y-years searching for you.."

Chasm's face falls. "Oh my feathers, I am so sorry.."

"It's alright. I'll shift into..something smaller. Maybe a feather?"

"Sure."

Kit~~
The survivors were all huddled in a group in the lobby, and a sorry group they were. There were maybe twenty of us in total, and only about seven of us knew how to use a weapon properly. Needless to say, getting out of the city was going to be tricky.
Animal Eyes stood on a chair, clapping his hands to gather everyone’s attention. His eyes darted in every direction, as if he were expecting an attack at any moment. The refugees fell silent, turning to watch him.
“Listen up, everyone. We’re going to have to get out of this city, so I need you all to listen.” Animal Eyes paused, making sure everyone was really paying attention. “That means we’re going to be running through an active warzone.”
“Where are we even going to go?” Someone asked.
“Mer, if we can make it that far,” Animal Eyes replied. “Now, here’s the plan.” He continued to speak, but I found myself unable to pay attention. Instead, I worried about how I could get away from everyone else. Especially since they all seemed to need me so much.
Eventually, Animal Eyes--I still couldn’t remember his actual name--finished speaking and began to lead us onto the streets. Right now, they were silent, but we all knew how quickly that could change. I looked down at the knife in my hand, hoping I wouldn’t have to use it.
Animal Eyes ran to the end of the street to scout ahead. He quickly became impossible to see, rain was coming down in thick droplets and things were only visible for a distance of about two feet.
There was complete silence as everyone held their breath, praying to the Powers for his safe return.
The sound of footsteps splashing through puddles alerted us of his presence. He was already shaking his head. An icky, coppery feeling flooded my mouth. I wasn’t sure what to call it.
“I’m sorry. There’s too many soldiers, we can’t get out,” He said.
“...What if I caused a distraction?” I suggested after a moment of tense silence. He tilted his head, an odd emotion in his blue eyes.
“By yourself?” Someone asked.
“I mean. Yes, that is what I was planning. Unless someone could help.”
“I’ll go with you,” Animal Eyes suddenly interjected. “Felix, can you lead these people to Mer?” I couldn’t see him, but I assumed Felix nodded as a look of relief passed over Animal Eyes.
“Okay, Kit, let’s go.” Animal Eyes led me into an alley, where we climbed onto the roof of a building overlooking the platoon of soldiers.
“So, any ideas?” Animal Eyes asked. I examined the street, desperately trying to make out shapes in the darkness. There was a large group of soldiers, the exact amount I was unsure of. Alot. At least twenty. Maybe more.
But then I noticed something. There were two barrels, sitting upon a tarp. I could just barely make out their labels-- “EXPLOSIVE.”
I tapped Animal Eyes on the shoulder and pointed towards the barrels. “Can you shoot those?” I whispered. He nodded, already aiming his pistol at them.
Animal’s gun fired, and suddenly there was a bright, blinding light. My back hit the stone roof and a cry of pain escaped my lips. I could hear Animal Eyes groan to my left. Despite the rain I could feel a searing heat, and the smell of smoke burned my nostrils.
“They’re on the roof!” A voice shouted. Not one of the refugees. A soldier. I forced myself to sit up, wiping dust from my eyes. My metal hand wasn’t functioning properly--debris had been wedged into its crevices, but I’d have to worry about it later.
“Animal, we’ve gotta go,” I whispered, pulling him to his feet. There was blood dripping down his face--he must’ve cut it when we were blown backwards.
He let out a weak laugh. “It’s Angel.” Embarrassment flooded my stomach.
“Right. Sorry.” We began to stumble forwards. I climbed down first, then helped ‘Angel’ get down. The sound of gunfire began, and I heard more shouting from the soldiers.
We began to run, and my ankle started to sing its own chorus of pain. It was definitely sprained, but there was nothing I could do at the moment. I tried to limp as fast as possible.
There was no way we could outrun the soldiers. Angel must have realized this, as he grabbed my arm and dragged me into a boarded up building. The sound of footsteps thundered by seconds after he closed the door. We froze, crouched underneath a table, not even daring to breathe.
But eventually, the soldiers left. Angel breathed out a sigh of relief, stretching out. I used to table to pull myself to my feet. There was a lantern hanging above it--I grabbed a match from Angel’s bag and lit it. We were in some kind of restaurant. Hopefully that meant there would be something for us to eat.
“Wait, don’t go anywhere. You’re injured,” Angel said. I assumed he meant my ankle, but I looked down to see a massive, red patch on my side, a spike of wood sticking out from it.
“Oh, Claaws,” I whispered, horrified. And then I fell backwards, blacking out from blood loss.

Kit~~

The first thing I remember is blue. Bright, beautiful, glorious blue, the only thing for miles. I don't remember the pain. Maybe I was in shock. I don't know. I never asked.

I remember a breeze passing over my face. I remember wondering where I was but not really caring. It felt surreal. And peaceful. Sometimes I wish I could go back to that feeling. To that eternal blue.

And then I saw a cloud and I realized it was sky and that I was on the ground. I heard voices. They were saying a word I didn't recognize. I now know they were saying "Kimiko".

And then his face loomed over mine, and that wonderful, delightful peacefulness was all gone. Forever.

Slowly, my eyes opened, and scanned over the room. The chandelier was still glowing, but now there was light peeking in through the boards over the windows. I wondered, faintly, what time it was, but I wasn't capable of thinking much more. The pain in my side was unbearable.

I tried to sit up a little, but gasped as the pain flooded through every atom of my body. For a second, I swore I could even feel the pain in my right arm. It was like the pain had hijacked my brain.

"Maybe don't try to move." Angel sounded quite concerned.

"No kidding," I muttered. I think Angel laughed. Still sounded nervous, though.

Slowly, I tried to sit up again. Just enough to see the injury. The pain was excruciating, but when I stopped moving it became almost bearable. It had been stitched up, and there was a makeshift cast around my ankle. My first aid skills paled in comparison to Angel's, which made sense.

"How long was I asleep?" I asked.

"A whole day. It's two days after we escaped the hospital. Morning, I think," He replied.

Right. The hospital. "Did the others escape?"

Angel shrugged. "I hope so." I noticed there were stitches on Angel's forehead, too. Clearly, my idea with the exploding barrels was not nearly as clever as I had thought.

"What's the state of the battle?"

"Resistance is all gone. Catastrophe's got the city." His voice cracked when he spoke. I wondered how many of his fellow soldiers he'd watched die while hiding in here.

"Oh."

"It's fine. We've still got Mer." Angel didn't sound very confident in that. I wished I knew what to say.

After a few more uncomfortable beats of silence, I decided I couldn't stay sitting. I needed to do something, at the very least. I began to slowly lower my legs onto the floor, and gingerly lift myself off the table I'd been laid on. Pain flooded through my body and I grimaced, already regretting the decision but refusing to stop.

"Wait, wait--" Angel gave up with his protests and instead grabbed my shoulder to steady me. I think he realized there was no way he was going to get me to lay down.

My vision blurred for a moment but cleared as I took deep breaths. "This...works," I finally said.

Angel didn't seem to agree, by the expression on his face, but he didn't say anything.

"We should leave. If there's nobody outside," I began.

"Actually, we should probably lay low for--"

"Yes, we should leave," I said again, with more conviction in my voice. "Before they find us here."

Mostly, I figured this would give me an opportunity to abandon Angel. He'd been kind so far, and I appreciated him, which is exactly why I needed to leave. I was starting to become a burden to him, and besides, I had a habit of getting people who cared about me hurt.

I moved towards one of the boarded windows, pushing Angel away. I pressed my face against the boards, staring through the little slit.

The streets were silent, and empty, almost eerily so. But, it meant we could escape. As long as we were careful, I was certain we would be able to get out. After all, we were just two people. It's much easier for two people to stay hidden than it is for twenty people.

Well, assuming my injury didn't hold us up.

"So, how are our chances?" Angel asked. I told him how empty the streets seemed to be. I was ready to plead with him to escape, but he just nodded.

"Okay," He said. "I trust you."

You probably shouldn't, I thought, but I stayed silent. I slowly opened the restaurant door. It creaked, and I winced.

But no soldiers came.

We stepped out onto the streets. Began to walk down the road.

No soldiers came.

We heard the sounds of voices on the street and ducked behind a barrel of gunpowder, and were reminded of my awful plan that landed us in this situation.

But no soldiers came anywhere near us.

Then, gunshots. We sprinted into an empty clothing store and hid amongst the racks of dresses. There were shouts, and yelling, then silence.

No soldiers.

"Something strange is going on," Angel decided.

I nodded in agreement, then we silently crept towards the glass window at the front of the store. There was a single figure standing in the street, but they were no soldier of Catastrophe.

Whoever they were, they wore a dark cloak, hood covering their face. A bag sewn from vines was on their back. They had four, muscular, medium-toned arms. I noticed a bright blue band around their ankle.

Angel, much more confident than I, opened the door to the shop. "Who in Lunee's name are you?"

The person looked towards him and lowered both their sword and hood. They had orange tentacles, and gills on their neck.

A Homo Aquarius.

Of course.

Chasm~

My heart is obviously racing. I literally just met my childhood crush, and now this?

"Chasm, are you coming with me- us?" The other one says.

"Yes, yes, I'll come." I answer.

Ghost grins. "Well, good news first or bad news?"

"Good news. Please."

"I found a way to sneak in without them saying you're a traitor or me being captured!"

Ghost turns into a human and pulls out a feathery domino mask out of one of her leaf pouches. I raise an eyebrow, as she puts it on, taps it, and it becomes a full face mask.

"Easy. Bad news now." She points toward the shimmering golden figure coming closer and closer to us. "That's not Golden. Someone else."

I groan.

Ohhhh I just found Chasm's charrie sheet... He and Golden will be interesting, nice :) Ryann can be an NPC, by the way, I literally made him up on the spot

~Silverwhisker

My head jerks towards the golden figure. My night vision serves me well, and I nod. "It's a human - well, humanoid, anyway." Then Ghost's words sink in, and my shoulders slump. "So not Golden, then. Right. But who?"

Ghost shakes her head. Then Chasm says, "It's Ryann - a member of the Resistance. He's kind of a lower-ranking officer, probably on patrol."

I extend my claws in and out, kneading the soft sand in agitation. "Ghost, put your mask on quick."

She does, and Ryann soon reaches us. He frowns. "Chasm, who are these?"

Chasm glances at Ghost and I quickly. "They're - old friends - I just found them. Looking for someone. Can we bring them back to camp?"

Ryann eyes me suspiciously for a moment, then nods tersely and beckons to us. "Fine. Follow me."

I am internally screaming. Worst comes to the worst, I'll kill- no, I shouldn't think like that. But he is a lower ranking officer...well, if he recognizes me, I'll have to kill him.

"This way. What are your names and your businesses."

"My name is none of your beeswax, and Chasm already stated what we've come here for." I snap angrily.

"That is no way to talk to an officer."

"Well, what if I want to?" My voice is nearing to a screech, and my wolf form is starting to form inside my soul, even with me trying to push it down as hard as I can. Silverwhisker nudges me and whispers, "Try to be a little bit kinder..ok? We don't want to seem sus."

I sigh. "Alright. I suppose we can try this again. My name is Stellae, Shapeshifter of the Woods, Ex-Princess of the Shapeshifters, at your service."

I bow slightly.

Then Ryann screams.

"YOU'RE THE-"

I shift into a wolf, my mask falling off as I charge towards him and tape up his mouth with the little cloth and sap I have leftover. Chasm is staring.

"I can and might kill you if you reveal the information..." I hiss, my pupils dilating.
