The dice clattered

The dice clattered on the table, Felix looking down at them lazily. The tavern around him was full of cheery laughter and talk, the lamps dim. It was midnight, and instead of sleeping, Felix was here, trying to make some extra cash.

"Doubles again, I guessed right!" Felix exclaimed, "Hand over the money!"

His opponent, a serious-looking young woman rolled her eyes and slid a pile of gold coins over. Felix grinned with satisfaction as he swept the gold coins into his purse with a pleasant clinking. "Pleasure!" he said, giving a small bow to the woman, before skipping out into the night.

Felix whistled to himself as he strolled through the streets of Paralia. The air was mild and warm, and Felix was perfectly happy to stay here and make some extra money while he figured out how to travel without getting shot by the Resistance or Catastrophe's army.

The quaint storefronts were mostly closed, with wooden boards covering the windows for the night. It wasn't quite safe anywhere anymore, but Felix could live with that, it was fine.

Felix turned a corner, and almost tripped over a tent stake.

Jumping up, Felix looked around curiously. A lime green tent was tacked to the ground, that had definitely not been there the day before. He looked up at the sign. It read 'Millie's Fortune Telling' in garishly painted rainbow letters.

Ooh! Fortune telling! Wonder how much it costs?

With not an ounce of hesitation, Felix ducked inside the tent.

Inside, it was dark, and Felix caught the strong scent of peppermint. Peculiar photos with bullet holes shot through them, and playing cards, and strange things hung from the velvet walls of the tent. A hooded figure sat at a lime green table, on which stood a single foggy crystal ball.

"Hey! What's that?" Felix greeted, pointing curiously at a certain photo, which seemed to be of a white flower, that looked unexplainably wrong.

"Nothing," the hooded figure said, "Why are you here?"

Felix shrugged. "You're a fortune teller, right?"

"Duh."

"Alright, can you tell me my fortune?!"

"It costs two coins."

Felix drew two coins from his purse, and flicked them at the fortune teller. He could've sworn that they rolled their eyes, if he could've seen their eyes.

"Alright," they said, leaning forward and placing their hands on the crystal ball, "look into the crystal ball and tell me what you see."

Felix stared into the white crystal ball. A speeding horse broke through the fog, dashing through the crystal ball, until suddenly, it keeled over, and was replaced with a white flower, sprouting from its body. The white flower swirled through the mist, growing larger and larger and larger, but then–a sudden gunshot rang out, and the crystal ball went blank.

"I saw a horse! And a white flower! And then I heard a gunshot! What does the gunshot mean?"

"The horse means you'll be traveling a lot. The white flower means regret. And the gunshot ..."

The hooded figure jumped up, and poked their head outside the tent. "The gunshot means it's time to leave."

With a swirl of green mist, Felix stumbled back, outside the tent, and watched as it folded itself up, into a tiny velvet package, and darted down an alleyway.

Felix got up, a little disorented, and looked around. People were running, and the clang of metal and sounds of fighting drifted towards him. Something had happened.

Definitely time to leave, Felix thought, pocketing the picture of the white flower he had stolen from the tent, and slipping down a side street. Paralia had fallen to fighting. It was time to do some traveling.

I tilt my head. "What are you looki - oh. Whoa. How did your names get there??

Ghost grins. I purr, still a little confused, but it's good to see her smile again.

Not sure where you want to go with this, so I'll keep it short...

Ghost-

"It's a long story.." I grin, remembering the details. "We traveled here before...we put this here to remember that we will always be together in each other's hearts..it was part of a blood oath, that we would be each other's new family..."

I trace my claws on the slightly reddened block of earth.

"C'mon, let's go..." I first fish out a leaf and make a little etching of the carving, and stick it in my pouch, then shift into a silvery-white-haired human and walk into the beginning of the labyrinth.

I pause another moment after Ghost leaves, staring at the carving. Then I run after her.

The tunnels vary in size, color and shape every turn we take. After just a few turns my sense of direction has been turned around, upside-down, and backwards. I look up at Ghost. "Do you know where we are? Or where we're going? Because I don't."

Ghost~

"Yup. Sure do. I memorized these paths and riddles a long time ago- appears they've been ransacked and destroyed. Gods, still remembering this...this was a long time ago..."

I start towards what I believe is the center of the chamber, stretching my ears to listen for the cavern's trademark ringing sounds. I hear silence.

My eyes widen.

"Oh gods, oh no, this is not, not, not good- what, how, but it- oh the tunnels must have been blocked up, not good, not good-"

I start hyperventilating, sitting there and breathing heavily.

"Gods, not good, not good, not good..."

I rush to the shapeshifter's side and look into her eyes. "Ghost. Calm down. It's okay, we'll find a way out."

Eventually she takes a deep breath and nods. "Okay. So what do we do?"

I look around the cavern. It has rough stone walls and it's floor is only a little smoother. There's nothing to suggest any hints for where to go. Except - I pad to the other side from Ghost and stretch up on my back legs. There are black carvings there. It looks like they were filled in with another material. Ghost walks up behind me.

"I don't remember ever seeing those," she says. "They're not any of the riddles I know."

I can't tell what the marks are supposed to be. It looks like some scene - there are a couple of people, and a few animals, but I don't know what kind.

Suddenly, they start to move.

It shows Goldenfeather joining the bad side.

I can only gape, my eyes filling with tears.

"T-the bl-blood o-oath...i-it di-didn-didn't m-me-mean any-anything t-to h-her..."

I break down into tears.

"S-she m-mu-must h-have t-tho-though t-that w-we a-aban-abandoned h-her..."

Suddenly, my head shoots up.

"I know where we are. 24th cavern, 55th to the right, then according to that we should be right back-"

I point to the right entrance.

"That's the way. I'm sure of it."

No. I can only shake my head, murmuring the word over and over. It's like losing her all over again.

"That's the way. I'm sure of it."

I look up at Ghost. "Okay." Ghost starts down the corridor. I follow her, and soon we're in a large cavern. It's walls are some kind of rock that is softly glowing with a blue light. "Wait, is this the way out?"

Ghost looks back at me. "Yes, but with a detour."

Ghost~

I start into the middle of the rocks and begin chanting in latin.

"Aqua, Terra, Caelum, Ignis, show me the path, show me your secrets, show me the past, the present, the future, but keep them safe."

The rocks began to glow blue, white, red, or green, and rearranged themselves in a pattern. I fell to the ground, panting heavily.

"Well. It's been a long time since I last used that enchantment."

The rocks are rearranging quickly, and I manage to stand up and start analyzing them.

Kit--

Felix knows a nearby hospital and leads me down a set of winding alleys to get there, gunshots firing all around us. I can feel my heart pounding against my chest and I worry that it will pop, like a balloon that's been stepped on. Felix and I manage to share the wait of the unconscious elven soldier between us, but the body is still heavy and we aren't able to move quickly. I wonder if we should have left them, or if we should have taken them to a medical tent--but I remind myself Paralia is a Resistance-occupied city. (At least, that's what Felix had told me.) The hospital is probably where they're already keeping their wounded.

We manage to survive our trip to the hospital, and my suspicions are confirmed. There's a group of Resistance medics waiting outside the hospital. I guess the hospital must be full, as they've set up tents to store bodies in. I don't know if they're dead or alive and I decide I don't want to know.

"Who in Claaws' name are you?" One of the medics shouts at us. They're short, and thin, with a mess of freckles and ruffled blond hair on their head. They look mostly human but their eyes are strangely animal-like.

"We're civilians. We're not here to attack," Felix calls. He begins to set the body on the ground and I mirror him, stepping away from it as soon as possible.

"I'm Felix, and this is Kit." He gestures towards me. The medics eye us warily.

"I already stitched up the wound on his..." I trail off. What's the word, again? I realize I can't think of it.  I realize I don't remember the word and I feel scared and worried because what if I forget everything again and I never remember anything again but most of all I feel useless and stupid and now the medic is waiting for me to finish the sentence but I can't remember the damn word and I don't know what to do.

Felix, thank the Powers, seems to sense that I can't speak, and finishes for me. "They stitched up the wound on his abdomen."

Abdomen, that was the word I was looking for, the one I couldn't find but Felix could and I feel stupid and useless and scared--and the medic is giving me a concerned look--and I realize I'm not ready for this, for the real world. Not yet. Not ever.

The medics bring us into the hospital and say we can spend the night there. The building is already packed with other refugees from the city, and I see nurses and doctors bandaging wounds and passing out supplies. I wonder how long I'll be trapped in here, listening to the sounds of the ill and watching death and suffering from the constant droning noise of gunshots. Days. Weeks, maybe.

I feel like I'm suffocating.

Felix and I are uninjured and so we're guided into a smaller room, which an absurdly low number of peole are in. I guess hardly anyone who was able to get to safety did it safely. I almost feel like laughing at the irony of it.

"Are they...alright?" I hear the blond-haired, freckle-faced medic ask Felix. I notice the medic's greyish-green uniform is covered in blood. I wonder whose body it was once inside of.

Felix glances at me. "Kit? You're alright, right?"

I nod. "Yeah. I...had kind of an accident a while ago. Damaged my memory a little, that's all." A little. Ha.

"Is that how you lost your arm?" The medic asks.

I shake my head. "No. Was born without one."

Eventually, the lights are turned out and everyone lays down on one of the white cots lined against the wall. A few of the medics--including the blond, animal-eyed one--end up spending the night in the same room as us. I guess it was the only place with space left. Somehow, I'm able to fall asleep, the sound of gunfire still ringing in my ears.

Kind of a long post, I'm aware.

Kit~~

"Hey, Kit, wake up."
I open up my eyes to see Felix's face looming above mine. There's a grin plastered to his expression, and I wonder why. A moment later, my question is answered when he reveals the hospital workers have passed out breakfast.

The meal is small, and consists of toast, fried grubs, and a cup of warm tea. Even if there's not much of it, the food actually doesn't taste bad--although, I don't remember very many tastes that I can compare it to.

A nurse comes into the room to collect our dishes, and as I hand her my plate I notice the medics are all gone. I suppose they must be tending to the wounded, who can only be growing in number. Already, the sounds of gunfire have resumed.

The suffocating feeling from last night returns.

I decide I will feel better if I'm able to do something. I stand up and approach the nurse, trying not to bump into anyone.

"Do you need any help treating injuries?" I ask the nurse. "I have experience with that." At least, I hope I do--I can't exactly remember many times I've treated people. But last night, I seemed to know what I was doing.

The nurse looks at me, their gaze lingering briefly on my metal arm. "You're the one who patched up that soldier last night, right?"

I nod.

"Well, we need all the help we can get. Sure, I guess." I follow them out of the room, and they take me to the person who seems to be in charge. Said person is a tall Dolor Felis with ginger fur and green eyes.

The Dolor Felis looks at me. "What?!" She snaps.

"The cyborg wants to know if they can help with the wounded," The nurse explains.

The Dolor Felis stares at me for a moment. "Hmm. I suppose they can help Hildebrande."

The nurse takes me into another branch of the hospital, where the injured lay on cots lined all against the wall. It looks like some sort of twisted department store.

To my surprise, Hildebrande turns out to be the medic from last night. He looks equally shocked to see me.

"Colonel Hildebrande, this is Kit. They're here to...help, I guess."

"Kit!" He says, with a grin. "Name's Angel Hildebrande. Nice to properly meet." He holds out his hand, which I shake. I notice his hair is really more of a light brown than a blonde. I also notice he's much shorter than me.

"Yeah, sure is…" I trail off, noticing one of the patients.

"That's Lieutenant Allen. I'm sure he'll be real nice to you when he wakes up," the medic says. "You saved his life, y'know."

I glance over at...Claaws, what's his name? An...An-what? I notice his eyes, and suddenly 'Animal Eyes' is the only name I can think of for him.

"Not much of a talker, I guess," Animal Eyes says, after I let the silence continue. "Right! Let's get to work."

I spend the rest of the afternoon stitching and bandaging wounds, and doing my best to look like I understand how I know how to do everything. Animal Eyes manages to hold several conversations with me, though they're mostly one-sided. He doesn't seem to mind--I think he likes the sound of his own voice a little too much.

When night finally comes, I am thankful to finally rest.

I stare at the rocks as they move around and eventually settle, still glowing. Ghost looks at them, frowning. She walks around to see it from different angles, and eventually, she says, "I don't know what it means. It's never been like this before."

I move to the middle of the rocks to see if I can see anything, even though I don't know how to interpret them. Then I see a pattern. And I understand it. I don't know how or why, but it's like I've seen it before.

I see Goldenfeather. And lynxes - me and my family. And one I don't recognise. And... a shapeless form... somehow I know that that's what killed my family.

Ghost is staring at me. "You understand it?"

I nod slowly.

"Huh. Well, what do you see?"

I summarise it, then say, "We need to go to __ to find Golden."

We could go to the Grasplands and do that RP at least for a little (idk if you're allowed to do that)? Or Sprocketville, or the Drifter Outpost. What do you think?

Ghost~

The rocks begin to rearrange themselves again, and I begin to decipher it in my brain.

"So if x is there, and y is there, z must be there....x is 2y, then z would equal to 4y, z equals to 2x...then that connects right there, pythagorean theorom...then that, over there, yeah angles equal 180, that's good...aha!"

I madly scribble something down on a leaf and begin to scrutinize the rocks.

"Goldenfeather was on a ship called The Avenger 2 days ago, that's how long we've been in the Labyrinth, yes it's right, no don't question my facts, how do I know? because according to the shadows of the rocks, it's about midday, two middays already passed so yeah. She's now in- I- Drifter's Outpost."

We're soon out of the Labyrinth, thanks to Ghost's memory. She shifts into a large bird and we fly west. Towards the Drifter Outpost. The sun beats down on us, and I'm soon panting in my thick fur.
But it's worth it when I spot a tower in the distance - the Drifter Outpost. Ghost lands, just within sight of the Outpost, and says, "We should go in from here on foot. Less chance of them spotting us."
I nod. "You'd better transform into something smaller, too."
She shifts into a desert fox and we walk towards the Outpost. The sun starts to go down. It's cooler, and I'm much more comfortable.
"So what's our strategy? Do we just walk in and ask for help, or should we sneak in and find Golden by ourselves?"
