 Role Playing Story

Heya, I'm going to try something new in the Inkwell, (Hoping it isn't breaking any rules.) It's called fourm role-playing. Bassically, it's like a story with many different authors. Everyone makes a character in the world, and we take turns posting the story out. There are just a few rules, otherwish you can just jump in.

1. No taking control of other people's characters.

This is common sense, please make sure you stick to controlling your charrie and your charrie only.

2. No making an all powerful charrie.

No making any charries who can destroy an entire city with a clap of their hands, kay? Again, common sense.

3. Have fun!

Self explanitory. ^-^

Let's get this thing started!

Xelix yawned, as he put his feet up on his desk. Another boring day at the Mage's Guild. Another day of deskwork. It was tedious work, having to sit at the desk, day after day, answering all questions applicants had. He had been promised adventure, not a desk job when he applied. He suspected it had to do with his age- 15, in the bigwig's opinion, was too young to go out and defeat the beasts that prowl the land at night. After all, they were only kids, right? Well, this 'kid' was very proficiant in all kinds of water magic, and could easilly knock out an un-prepared foe with a simple swipe of hardened water, which also doubled as a shield against attacks. Still, the pay was decent, and three rectangular meals a day and a place to sleep weren't anything to complain about, so life was pretty good.

He heard a small 'mew' as something brushed against his legs. He smiled at his small calico cat, Ala, who jumped on his lap and began purring cheerfully. "Well, at least one of us is happy....." Xelix yawned, stroking Ala on her head. He glanced upstairs. It was still morning, so most of the mages were still asleep in their rooms, and no one was sitting in front of the fire, (It was mid-winter) and studying some new latest spell. It was quiet, and Xelix liked it that way.

((That was perfect, Reuben! And I'm glad we've got Jane. We needed somebody who doesn't WANT to learn magic to contradict all those vowel maids. And yes, Lena, I stand corrected, Sara does not begin with an A (uh, not that I thought it did). I guess she's the individual. Also, can we have a show of hands (okay, not literally) on who thinks that as Starfire suggested she could pick up for Dmboogie, because now that Xeliex is "awaiting trial" with Larco (yes, my fault, so sorry Xeliex) we sort of need somebody for him. Alessandra's social magic learning group accomplices can help her hobble along but since they're sort of out of touch at present (we're mainly looking at Larco and fellow convict Xeliex here) I think Xeliex is more plot-essential.))

A few hours later, after a miserable ride on a turbulent, smelly carriage, Jinni Francis found herself standing amid the bustle of Faerhoven, dwelling of the Mages. Only the highest-priority folk lived here, mainly manufacturers. There was also, of course, a jail. A putrid, wayward-seeming jail, but a jail nonetheless. Jinni sniffed disapprovingly as she strode by. Not that she was one to speak, of course, hardly being the picture of honor or dignity with a knapsack over her shoulder and a coarse (but relatively clean) brown dress on, but it gave her some comfort to know she wasn't yet reduced to thievery.

She was prepared to walk right through Faerhoven to the Palace of the Mages, where she might find work while simultaneously charming a young duke, perhaps, or a mage-in-training, but some brouhaha outside of the prison drew the young girl's attention and she turnd abruptly back to see what was going on.

Almost instantaneously shrill screaming (not unlike her own) pierced the monotonous sounds of a sleepy (?) village. "ESCAPED PRISONERS! ESCAPED PRISONERS! SPIES, DANGEROUS SPIES! CATCH THEM, CATCH THEM! THEY'LL BE ROASTING OVER A SPIT BY THE END OF THE FORTNIGHT!"

Good Heavens, Jinni thought, that sounds serious. Wonder whatever in the world they've done. Moseying aroundsome other bystanders, she caught a glimpse of two running figures. Two boys, about her own age. And marvel of marvels, there, with the same shaggy black hair, the same scholarly face, was the very same Xeliex she had turned in earlier that very day!

A less responsible (or perhaps more loyal) girl would have immediately defended the two, or perhaps scampered after them to help, but Jinni, in her own defense, wasn't very experienced with loyalty or angry mobs. So resolutely--and ruthlessly?--she turned away from the unfolding scene and trudged onward to the Palace.

((I'm really sorry about that technobabble at the beginning of my last entry. I don't know how it got there. Please read everything after the words "five hours later" and dont give up at stupid Microsoft Word junk. Thanks!))

Tiara waked up the stairs to her secret bedroom.  Her bedroom had a small bed in the center, and bookshelves lined the walls.  She pulled out a book on magic and sat down on her bed to read it.  By the end of the evening she could make a puff of smoke come out of her fingers. "Learning magic is exhausting," she thought.

((I'm with Alyssa. I skipped that "technobabble" (cool word), too.

Okay, right now, I'm bringing Annaliese back. I don't remember where she last was but time has passed since then so let's just assume that she and her vowel maid pals (and Sara with an S, of course) just had their first social magic-learning group, were not discovered (um, they hid... um... in the kitchen? No, to many people up late preparing meals... the Palace attic... good?), and learned to levitate small objects. Marvelous for them. Sorry if that's power-playing, but I think we need to sort of nudge the maids. No offense, but seriously.))

Jinni was admitted by the Palace guards and now she was standing inside the Grand Hall, completely oblivious to where she went next. It was late at night and there was only a floodlight trained on the Archmages' plush armchair (as opposed to throne) at the very front of the collosal room. Though this was uncommon, Jinni was in awe.

But still oblivious.

And then, thankfully, a maid came dancing down the stairs, whistling a cheery little tune. Startling her, Jinni asked who she was.

"Oh! I'm Annaliese," said the maid peppily, after getting over the initial shock. "And who are you? I don't recall ever meeting you. New girl?"

"Hopefully," said Jinni, not sounding at all hopeful. In fact, her tone was the direct opposite of Annaliese's. "You, though, remind me of someone. Might we have met?" Her words were unusually eloquent, but as the villagers back in Alcigam put it, "she can talk fancy if she'd want."

"I really don't think so," said Annaliese slowly. "But you may have met my brother... you're too young-looking to have known... Ma or Da... before they... died... but everyone says I look a lot like Xeliex. He's my brother. He's late getting home tonight, though, and I'm worried."

Jinni nearly fainted. "You are Xeliex's sister?"

"Yes, of course." She sounded puzzled. "Why? Do you know him? Have you met? Today? Where is he?"

Jinni bit her lip, fretting. "I'm afraid he's running from the Faerhoven police."

There was silence for a moment, an ominous silence. Then,

"What did he do? And how do you know?"

Jinni bit her lip again, then the whole wretched story poured out. She didn't mention her private thoughts on Xeliex.

Another foreboding silence, and then Annaliese said, quietly, dangerously, and accusingly, "You turned my brother in." It was a statement, not a question. Jinni wordlessly nodded.

"For something he didn't do." Another nod.

Annaliese gave Jinni what the villagers called "the evil eye," and turned on her heel, walking away.

((And now we SERIOUSLY need TNO (is it TNO??) back to control Annaliese, because she's probably going to go do something foolhardy to "rescue" her brother. Either way, that was probably inconvenient of me to summon her back from "the corner," as someone put it, but it had to be done. So either TNO comes back or Rueben does some very skillful writing to get both wayward siblings back in. No pressure.))

Leaving Jinni in the castle, alone.

Then she saw a movement in the shadows. A minute later, out stepped a cat. Jinni was not an animal person, but she followed it for some inexplicable reason. Through winding corridors and up and down semingly never-ending staircases they ambled until finally they came to a door. The cat lifted a paw and scratched, almost as though knocking, and then loped away.

The door opened and there, to Jinni's utmost surprise- and horror- stood the Archmage himself. He wasn't looking too happy.

And this time Jinni really did faint.

Thanks. I might try to get Annaliese back, but at this point it's not in my plans. Let's try to get TNO back.

((Mary, first of all, Annaliese belongs to ME. Allison P. A-L-L-I-S-O-N P. NOT TNO!!!! And furthermore, if you'd read the story correctly at the top, you'd realize Annaliese is NOT a maid. She's Xeliex's little sister who has to live with him at the Mage's Guild, who mostly gets shut in her room all day by her brother, and wants to learn magic, who befriended the maid Sara. She isn't a maid at all. In addition, she is not in a corner whatsoever! Lena and I have been adding to the story (once again, view up top) constantly, and I add to Annaliese's part nearly every day. So my character DOES NOT NEED NUDGING!!!!!!!!!!!))

Okay, sorry, my apologies. I suppose I got Alessandra and Annaliese mixed up. *blushes in complete embarrassment* And yes, you have been posting. It's TNO that is missing. Once again, sorry. I meant Alessandra when I posted, but I confused them and wrote her in as Annaliese. And yes, once again, Annaliese is not a maid. Parde mua. Excuse any maid remark about Annaliese. The two names are very similar (or to me, anyway). This is not me making up excuses for myself; I seriously did mess up the two names and I stand corrected (not something I often say). So I implore you to accept my humble apology.

(Sorrysorrysorry! *grovels* Kipin's computer got eaten by a virus, and she was out of the loop for almost a WEEK! Gaah, the pain! The suffering! *dies testily* Okay, now, the Archmage's life is in danger, yes? And there are a bunch of maids studying magic illegally, and Xeliex and Larco just escaped from prison. Hmm. What to do now?))

The Archmage winked back into the visible spectrum. Invisibility was a skill of middling difficulty, and some students experienced endless difficulty with it, but the Archmage had it mastered. "Amazing, the things one can learn when they are invisible," he murmured, crossing to his desk. A large, iridescent purple sphere sat there on a metal stand. Tapping it briskly twice, the Archmage fixed his gaze into it and whispered, "Vicemage." Smoke swirled beneath the surface of the orb, solidifying into an image of Lucifer Eggwald. His brows were drawn together in a stormy frown, and his mouth was moving rapidly, as if he was shouting. The Archmage watched him for a minute, stroking his beard reflectively and talking to himself. "Hmm, the Vicemage wants my job, no doubt, and in order to get it, I would have to be dead. The little snip that came in a moment ago was here to warn me, of course. And the pigeon he sent has gone astray. My secretary Xeliex is not in his office..." he interrupted himself to whisper "Xeliex" to the orb, "...and look at that, he's landed himself in prison, along with my little messanger snip. Hmm. It appears that they're trying to escape. Fascinating." He stood abruptly and crossed to the window. "Dark times have come to Faerhoven... the stars are going missing... what is the meaning of this?" On a sudden whim, he sat back down at the desk and said to the glass globe, "Annaliese." What he saw did not surprise him much. Xelix's plucky sister, and half the maids in the Guild Tower, it seemed, were clustered around a thick spellbook, reading. The Archmage chuckled. "We have some prospective new students!" Turning to one of his many shelves, he addressed a small clay statue of a dragon that sat there. "Flickr! I believe it is time to confront this 'illegal' study group. With the proper tutelage, these young ladies could be quintessential to the preservation of my position, not to mention the safety of all Faerhoven. Go and find them, and bring them to me!"

With a rusty-sounding croak, the clay dragon, Flickr, rattled his scales and took off out the open window.

Okay, I'm serious... are you still offended or can we proceed with the story? Sorry for delaying everybody else's fun... by this afternoon can I pleeeeease have an answer from Allison? This is me with my conscience; I don't want to do anything without being forgiven.

OK. We need people to continue the story.  I have a great idea for something, but it won't work if no one continues. (Reuben, you are the one I am mainly talking to here.)

Ladies, if you would like to have a maids-for-magic-learning session soon, my li'l dragon Flickr can pop in and summon you up to the Archmage's office for training. If you want. XD The Archmage was an 'illegal' magic learner once, too, so he has absolutely no qualms about teaching magic to anyone who has talent and wants to learn!
