Role Playing Story
Role Playing Story
Heya, I'm going to try something new in the Inkwell, (Hoping it isn't breaking any rules.) It's called fourm role-playing. Bassically, it's like a story with many different authors. Everyone makes a character in the world, and we take turns posting the story out. There are just a few rules, otherwish you can just jump in.
1. No taking control of other people's characters.
This is common sense, please make sure you stick to controlling your charrie and your charrie only.
2. No making an all powerful charrie.
No making any charries who can destroy an entire city with a clap of their hands, kay? Again, common sense.
3. Have fun!
Self explanitory. ^-^
Let's get this thing started!
Xelix yawned, as he put his feet up on his desk. Another boring day at the Mage's Guild. Another day of deskwork. It was tedious work, having to sit at the desk, day after day, answering all questions applicants had. He had been promised adventure, not a desk job when he applied. He suspected it had to do with his age- 15, in the bigwig's opinion, was too young to go out and defeat the beasts that prowl the land at night. After all, they were only kids, right? Well, this 'kid' was very proficiant in all kinds of water magic, and could easilly knock out an un-prepared foe with a simple swipe of hardened water, which also doubled as a shield against attacks. Still, the pay was decent, and three rectangular meals a day and a place to sleep weren't anything to complain about, so life was pretty good.
He heard a small 'mew' as something brushed against his legs. He smiled at his small calico cat, Ala, who jumped on his lap and began purring cheerfully. "Well, at least one of us is happy....." Xelix yawned, stroking Ala on her head. He glanced upstairs. It was still morning, so most of the mages were still asleep in their rooms, and no one was sitting in front of the fire, (It was mid-winter) and studying some new latest spell. It was quiet, and Xelix liked it that way.

Yay! *capers about madly*
(January 29, 2009 - 8:47 am)
Sorry! I forgot about that.
Sara's eyes widened. "Why am I crying, ma'am? I didn't realize...was I...?"
"Yes, you were crying," Annaliese said. "Why are you crying?"
"I'm not anymore," Sara said fiercely.
Annaliese sighed. "Can't you just tell me?"
"No ma'am. I don't suppose you'd understand."
Annaliese shrugged. "All right then."
Sara squirmed inside. Maybe she could trust Annaliese, maybe she couldn't. She just didn't know who to trust anymore. The last time she trusted a stranger, she ended up...here. Here, in this weird palace-y place.
But there was something in Annaliese's eyes that made Sara believe she, too, had a secret. Sara knew other people well, and she could tell that she could trust Annaliese.
Still, it was not proper for servants to initiate conversation. Sara would have to wait for Annaliese to ask her again, and who knew when that might be? She sighed and turned back to her work.
(January 31, 2009 - 6:22 pm)
Annaliese gave Sara a sidelong glance, studying her. It was obvious Sara had a secret - it sounded like a big one. And Annaliese practically collected secrets. Anything with mystery or obscurity around it intrigued her to no end.
Plus Sara seemed......forlorn, as if she was carrying around one of those secrets that you desperately want someone to know, yet can't tell a soul. The kind that drags on your heart and clouds your mind. The kind keeps after you, day after day, week after week, haunting your dreams. Why else would she have been crying, and then tried to cover it up? She looked so sad that Annaliese just had to make her smile.....and figure out her secret along the way. Annaliese rubbed her hands gleefully. Ooh, boy, did she love playing detective.
Ever so quietly, she siddled up behind Sara, peering over her shoulder. Sara was methodically swiping a dust rag over the polished oak wood furniture. Annaliese observed her silently for a moment, then said brightly, "Hey, Sara, that looks like hard work! How about I help you?" Without waiting for any answer or response, she snatched another rag from the bucket of cleaning supplies, and began vigourously scrubbing the dust particles off an antique side table.
"But - but ma'am! You... shouldn't....shouldn't be...." Sara protested.
Annaliese paused and looked at Sara skeptically. "I'm perfectly capable of dusting, too, you know. Besides, I like to help people out." She returned to her murdering of the dust, continuing, "I love being kind to all sorts of people, in all sorts of ways. My friends" Annaliese was fudging the truth, she knew - she didn't have any friends at all "say that I'm wonderfully open-hearted. They also say I'm good at keeping secrets. In fact, they say I'm the best secret keeper in town. They'll tell me anything, I won't tell a soul. Uh, uh, not me." She cast a sly smile at Sara, who was turning red from trying to keep a professional, straight face.
Annaliese smiled again and admitted, "I sound like a corny Cinderalla, don't I?"
Sara first shook her head no, but then a small bubble of laughter burst out from her clamped lips. She looked horrified, and pressed her lips tighter together, but another burst of giggles slipped out. And another. And another. Annaliese crossed her eyes and stuck out her tongue, and Sara finally doubled over with mirthless giggles, dusting forgotten.
((Please, anybuggy, tell me if and where my writing can use improvement. I've never posted any of my writing on Inkwell yet, because I want to get further in my story before putting it up, so this Role-Playing story is all the writing from me on here. So tell me what you think! Constructive critisism appreciated!))
(February 2, 2009 - 2:58 pm)
It's great! The only thing you might want to change is the voice. The 'Ooh, boy, did she love playing detective' doesn't really fit in with the voice of the rest of it, especially the part when she's describing the kind of secret Sara has. Other than that, I love it!
"Okay." Sara finally relented once she had calmed down, wiping tears from her eyes. For some reason the joke had made her feel better, like she could trust Annaliese. "The truth is that my parents...they can do magic," she blurted out, ignoring Annaliese's shocked expression. "They're really good at it, too, and they help out a lot of people that way, saving them from stuff like natural disasters. Only...they've gone on a particularly dangerous mission, and their superior told them they couldn't take me." Sara paused to wipe tears from her eys. "And so the superior told the people here that I could work here, until my parents get back at least. I've done a lot of housecleaning around my house, so I know how to do it. I just..." she sighed. "I just miss them so much, and I wonder if I've disappointed them. I don't know any magic, you know, no matter how much I try..." She looked up to Annaliese, suddenly feeling that she had gone on too long, but Annaliese was smiling. "What is it?"
(February 2, 2009 - 6:43 pm)
Annaliese was just waiting for her to ask. "I'm learning magic! Well, sort of. Trying to, at least. Not really succeeding. Yet." She rushed on, "My point is, we can study magic together! If both your parents can do magic, you probably can, too. I can't see why you wouldn't, and we could choose somewhere to meet once a week; it's not like I have anything else to do, after all, with Xeliex hounding me day and night to stay out of the way, and plus I met this mystery girl who's also learing magic...." She paused for a deep breath, then plunged back in. "So we could be sort of like a magic study group, and help each other learn spells and practice together! What do you think?" Annaliese beamed, delighted at her own brilliant idea.
Sara laughed again. "That's a good idea, from what I could actually make out of that speech."
Annaliese did a little skip in her overflowing enthusiasm. "Perfect! So when do you want to meet? And where?"
((Sorry for the short entry, I have a lot of HW tonight. Thanks for the critique, Lena, I never would have thought of that. Oh, and TNO, where are you? Are you still going to add to the story?))
(February 5, 2009 - 2:37 pm)
Don't worry about it; this is going to be short too. And TNÖ has mysteriously vanished; none of us know where she is.
Sara smiled. "I'm done my chores around eight usually. Will you be availible then?"
"Of course." Annaliese smiled. "Now excuse me, I have to go. See you at eight!"
"See you too!" Sara called after her.
Alone, Sara wondered if she had done the right thing in telling Annaliese. She knew that she could trust Annaliese all right, but what if someone found out what they were doing? They could both get in trouble. And the last thing Sara wanted was trouble.
Oh well, she told herself. It can't be helped now. And at least you have a friend, sort of. You never had any back home. And that was true. No matter what happened with the magic, Annaliese's friendship would be something she would keep forever.
But what about the magic? Sara wondered. She did so want to learn magic. Would Annaliese really be able to help? After all, she had said that she was learning magic herself - not that she knew magic. She'd just have to wait and see. The clock ticked.
(February 5, 2009 - 7:29 pm)
Annaliese bounded down the stairs two at a time, nearly tripping with the anticipation and exhilaration coursing through her veins. She and Sara were going to learn magic! And the best part was, they were going to do it together. Annaliese had never had a friend, always trailing in Xeliex's shadow her whole life, but she'd read about them and longed for one. Maybe Sara could be that friend.
Suddenly, she stopped short, an awful realization occuring to her like a whack on the head. Xeliex would positively murder her if he caught her out of her room after dinner at 6:00. He hated her being at the Guild in the first place and was constantly trying to pretend she didn't exist by shutting her in her room for hours on end. And if he found out why she was up and around at 8:00...she shuddered at the thought before squaring her shoulders determindely. If he catches me, he'll probably lock me in my room forever and throw away the key, she thought grimly. But I have to do this. When I learn magic......will I show him that little sisters can do a lot more than he thinks they can!
And with that thought in mind, she turned and marched down the corridor.
(February 9, 2009 - 4:25 pm)
Sara had been dusting in the room, and smiled a little when she saw Annaliese coming. "Hello."
"Hello yourself," said Annaliese. "Hey, why are you dusting?"
"Habit," Sara said. She put her dustrag away. "But let's get started here. What book have you been using?"
"This one," Annaliese said, pulling out her book and showing it to Sara. "It's a spell book."
Sara turned the pages carefully, and to her surprise felt tears biting her eyes.
"What is it?" Annaliese asked her.
Sara shrugged. "Nothing much, ma'am. I just miss my parents is all." She shut the book. "So, anyway, where are you in here?"
"I got as far as here." Annaliese showed her the place she had stopped.
"Okay. We'll start from there."
The two girls worked at their magic for long into the night. Although by the end of the studying, neither one of them could accomplish it fully, they knew the basics and could tell that they were getting somewhere.
"Same place tomorrow night?" Sara asked eagerly.
Annaliese nodded. "I'll see you then."
Sara watched Annaliese leave, and headed after her a few moments later. She was about to go down the corridor when she heard a rustle behind her.
"Who's there?" Sara called out.
The rustling grew louder. Sara's heart began to beat. "Who's there? Who's there? Annaliese, where are you?"
This Role-Playing is fun!
(February 10, 2009 - 8:19 am)
((Roleplay is supremely fun. Thanks for cooperating with my plan so nicely!))
Anara froze, aware of the loudness of the noise in the silence. She grimaced, since she still didn't want to be discovered. She had narrowly avoided it many times throughout the day, but she probably couldn't escape now. Her foot, pressed against her other leg above from the leaf that had somehow gotten inside, began to ache, and she was forced to put it down, carefully. Then the voice called out. She recognized it as a girl's voice, not much older or younger then her... And one that was worried about discovery. Maybe she could convince them not to tell about her if she didn't tell about them. Or just not tell who she was. She yearned for conversation with a person. So she stepped out. She knew she was throwing all caution to the winds, but she almost couldn't help herself.
She looked the girl in the eye, and replied, "I'm here. I don't know where Analiese is, or who she is." She paused, and looked the girl in the eye. "Are you from the group that illegally met in that room?" It was a wild guess, but she had heard voices from that direction, and why else would the girl be so nervous?
The girl looked down, guiltily. "Yes." She almost whispered. Then she looked piercingly up. "And what are you doing, sulking around like you're not supposed to be here?"
Anara was faced with a difficult question. "I-" She hesitated. The girl jumped in, "You're not supposed to be here, are you?" Looking the girl in the eye, she replied, "No, I'm not. Neither are you. If you don't tell on me, I won't tell on you. Deal?"
"Deal." The girl reached out to shake Anara's hand. Anara, after they had shaken, asked, "Just out of curiosity, What were you doing?"
The girl looked ashamed again. "Illegal study of magic," she replied, in a voice almost too small to be heard. Anara raised an eyebrow. "And you're meeting again tomorrow?" The girl nodded. "Well, would you mind if I joined you?" The girl looked shocked. "What?!" Anara smiled. "Did you think you were the only people illegally studying magic? No, there are many other people. I am one of them. I will see you tomorrow night, if I decide to come, and perhaps explain myself more fully." She sauntered off toward bed, being extremely tired. It didn't occur to her until she had already gone too far to go back that she didn't know when they'd be there. But, it was unlikely that they met before sunset, so she'd be there at sunset. If they weren't there, she could wait.
((Wow, it's hard for me to control other people. If Sara actually wouldn't do any of this, just tell me and do some other thing for that part.))
(February 10, 2009 - 12:53 pm)
((It's okay, Starfire. Sometimes it's hard not to control Annaliese because I have so much dialogue with her. No, Sara would have said all of that.))
The next day, Sara saw Annaliese again while she was cleaning.
"Hi!" Annaliese said, and waved.
"Um, Annaliese, can I ask you something?" Sara asked, glancing about nervouly.
"Sure," Annaliese said with a smile. "What is it?"
"Well, uh, last night after you left I ran into this other girl. Anara I think was her name. She'd been spying on us."
"Oh no!" Annaliese said.
"Well, it looks okay." Sara took a deep breath. "She wants to study magic with us, too. I said that she could. Is that okay?" She was sweaty. What if Annaliese yelled at her or turned her over to Xelix? What if their friendship ended?

Ooo, fun! Kipin's never done a role-play before! Somebody mentioned an Archmage, mind if I borrow him, or is he off-limits? If he is, ignore my post.
In the highest part of the Tower of the Mages' Guild, the Archmage paced back and forth in front of his desk. The circular room was lined all the way around with bookshelves, stuffed with arcane texts; a collection that rivaled the library downstairs in size. A sturdily built wooden desk sat by the only window. There was no fireplace. The Archmage could telepathically control the temperature in the room and keep it as warm or cool as he wished.
With a sigh, he halted his pacing before one of the many bookshelves and ran a restless, bony finger along the tomes' spines, brushing away a mote or two of dust. He recited the titles in his head: The Compleat Collection of Fyre Magycs, Ninety-Seven Healing Incantations, Rare Magical Species of the World, The Book of Fae-Craft, Intermediate Earth Spells...
These books had taught the Archmage nearly everything he knew about magic. Of the many secrets he kept from the world, the biggest was that of his past. Nearly a hundred years ago, he had come to the Mage's Guild with almost no magical talent but a great desire to learn. He found work as a kitchen boy, washing dishes for the cook and carrying meals to the Mages. In his minimal free time, he stole away to the vast Library and secretly read the magical texts, learning every lesson they taught him. By the time he was seventeen, his knowledge was greater than every Mage in the Guild, save for the Archmaga of the time. One night, she came down from the high Tower and found him reading by moonlight in the Library. At first, the boy was terrified. He thought she would smite him dead on the spot, or at least turn him into some sort of little slimy animal. But to his great surprise, relief and joy, she offered to become his mentor instead, seeing his boundless potential for magic. After a few years under her tutelage, most of which were spent polishing the skills he had learned on his own, he replaced her as the Archmage of the Mage's Guild. He was the youngest ever to become the Archmage, earning the title when he was only twenty-two years old.
Lost in his memories of the past, the Archmage barely noticed the tentative knock at the Tower door. Only when the knock came again, a bit louder the second time, did he turn towards the sound.
"Must be my hearing, giving out on me," he muttered to himself, running his fingers through his long beard as he sat at his desk. "Come in!"

uh oh please don't hurt me if i mess up. i've never done this before.
Miles from the Mages Guild, a darker scene was unfolding. In the mountain caves, near the Great River, a boy sat facing the wind. He was an outcast, he had traveled many miles beyond the woods known to him. His eyes, the spark of anger evident, swirled with molten gold and streaks of red as bright as the fires that burned when new wood was thrown in.
The bright shining moonlight spilled over the rim of the cave, and the boy started. He scurried out to the mouth, spreading his arms wide, his ripped and torn tunic pressed flat by the raging winds that spread across the land. With an unhuman cry of wild freedom, he transformed. His arms turned to wide wings brushed with gold feathers. His mouth elongated, turning into the beak of an eagle. With the wind pressing against him, he leapt from the cave, soaring into the dark night. And he was gone, swallowed by the magic of the night.

((That was amazing writing, Kit Kat! I was entranced; it was like I was really there! Oh, and Lena, can you please continue? I need Sara to respond to Annaliese in order for me to keep my part of the story moving. Thanks!))
(January 31, 2009 - 1:16 pm)
Allabeth stared in surprise at what she had just seen. How could a boy her age do that? She glanced around her. Was he from that magic place, too? Did he know about her? She started darting through the trees, ready to become her true self. But just before she could, she saw a pair of eyes glinting at her. She had recognized those two piercing pairs in a second. Everything was lost now that that had seen her.
(February 5, 2009 - 8:00 pm)
((OH! Roleplay! Yay! Haven't done this in a while, so sorry if I'm a bit rusty. Let's see...))
Anara moved to catch the light on the book she was reading. She didn't even think about it, although a moment after she had done it, she glanced down to the floor. She stayed more or less still for another half hour, until the sun had moved again, and then she stepped forward again. When she glanced down again, she noticed that she was on top of her last marker, and with a reluctant sigh closed the book and slid it back into place on the bookshelf. Soon, the mages would be up and about, and today someone might decide to come to this remote library. Not that anyone ever had, but she couldn't risk it. Climbing up the bookshelves, she came to the second from the top. Putting her hand and her head through the largish gap between the books and the shelf, she crawled into the darkness behind them. There was a small room back there, why, she knew not. It was quite convenient though. No one knew that she was an unseen guest in this guild. No one knew she was slowly but surely learning magic. She had a precise schedule, which allowed her all the darkness hours, and one hour of light. Of course, reading at night was a problem when it wasn't full moon, but the first spell she had learned was one to call up a bit of light to read by. It was a dangerous life, but she lived it gladly. Any amount of danger was worth learning this magic. Magic which might, eventually, repay those who needed repaying.
