The Sea's Song
September’s (very late) CBversary RP!!
~~~
Cambria is a flourishing port city, full of life, laughter, and magic. For a city built from the ashes of a war only months ago, it is remarkable how much it’s grown and developed. And it’s also remarkable how quickly it’s grown, though no one questions the magic.
Your characters were children when the city rose. And they are barely grown when the city falls.
An inescapable darkness has risen. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, an idea unheeded by the founders of Cambria. Too much magic calls forth too much darkness. But what’s done is done, and their only hope now is to journey beyond the land across the perilous sea, in an attempt to save the people they have doomed.
The journey is not for the faint of heart.
The Lottery is the last thing they give you, a system enchanted to find the bravest, the strongest, the smartest, only the best to sail across the Deep and find salvation.
Rules and Information that you will NEED to know (PLEASE READ THEM ALL):
- There are 14 spots. Reservations are accepted, but you MUST post your charrie within a week of you reserving that spot or I’ll give it to someone else
- This will start after I have at least 7 characters
- I’d love a cast of both males and females, which brings up an important point
- CHARACTERS!!!! I would love if we had a ton of diversity, so I’m accepting literally anything, especially POC (People of Color) and LGBTQ+ (@ADMINS, sorry, just wanted to make sure you saw this if you’re not allowing this, please delete the part where it says LGBTQ+, so no one gets confused, thanks!!) NOTE: I will be looking over your characters and okaying them.
- The time period is a fantasy-medival, think Throne of Glass, Six of Crows, A Darker Shade of Magic, or if you have no idea what I’m talking about, just think of Pirates of the Caribbean or something in terms of clothing and technology
- NO OP CHARACTERS PLEASE, THANK YOU!
- Password: marshmallow fluff
- A note on magic: If you choose to give your characters magic, it does not mean that they can summon winds, control the ocean, or anything big like that. The magic in this world comes from a sort of stronghold thingy, so it can be mined, but not everyone is compatible with the magic, meaning that it is very picky and may possibly reject your character
- I might be a tad bit harsh on your character, but remember, it’ll help with your character building!
- Aaaaand I think that’s it, I hope you read it, and without further ado. . .
CHARRIE SHEETS! Please fill them in all the way, if you have any questions, feel free to ask!
(June 18, 2017 - 6:45 pm)
@EVERYBODY ESPECIALLY SEPTEMBER: I will be completely offline for four days starting tomorrow, and for two weeks starting Sunday, July 9th. I will do as much posting as I can afterward (i.e. brainstorming on paper with various scenarios depending on what happens while I'm gone, to be synthesized into a post when I actually have access to a computer), but it's going to be brief, because there's going to be another two-and-a-half-week offline stint immediately after that, starting Sunday the 23rd. If this means I cannot participate, oh well...Here's my first post, anyway, and if Khadijah must be played as an NPC, so be it.
~Khadijah~
The Equinox meant freedom, in the old days when I was young. Besides the Vernal Equinox and Midwinter with the new year's festival (never Midsummer because Midsummer was for the fae, more dangerous then than they are now), the Autumnal Equinox was the only day of the year that Prentices were allowed out of the monastery complex to taste the joys of Cambria proper. We went in groups of twelve, shepherded by two or three Magistrae, watching jugglers and dancing bears, buying sweets with whatever pocket money we'd been sent by our families or gotten for doing an odd job or two.
I was six, I'd been in the city a little over a year. It was my second autumn festival. I'd lived most of my life in the desert at that point, and with the slow, placid pace of life in the monastery making hours seem like eternities but months seem like minutes, it seemed like I'd hardly begun to discover the city. Magistra Caella kept having to call me back because I'd run off to examine a carving on a wall, or a stall with lots of colorful crystals, or a street artist painting portraits or something.
A lot happened that night. I tripped over the hem of my slightly-too-long robes and ended up skinning both knees, which Magistrus Derwood healed with a word and a touch; I used the three coppers I'd gotten for dusting all Magistrus Ekatonheile's books, the first Cambrian money I ever owned, to buy myself a little bowl of berries and cream mixed with real ice, the first frozen treat I ever ate; but it was the last thing that happened that I remember most clearly.
I convinced my then-friend Celia to break away from the group for a moment, toward an old brown-skinned woman on a street corner. Holding hands tight - we did not wish to get separated - we approached her and the pack of large, ornately decorated cards laid out on the ground in front of her crossed knees. Celia was too shy to say anything, but I told her good evening. She asked me what I wanted.
I don't know what possessed me to say it, but I asked that stranger what my destiny was.
She asked me what I'd pay. I told her I didn't have any money. Celia was tugging my hand, trying to get me to go back to the Magistrae, but I stayed a moment longer. The old fortune-teller looked straight into my eyes, and said - I remember this word for word - "Then a gift, freely given, for it needs to be heard: you are far from your home, child of sand and fire, but you must go farther still before there will be peace. Beware, for night falls suddenly. You must find your own lights in the dark."
She sat back and closed her eyes, and I knew I'd get nothing more out of her, not even if I sat there all night asking questions. I let Celia guide me back to the others, and the others guide me back to the monastery, and to bed.
I stayed awake for a while, wondering what in the name of hellfire and scorpions she'd meant. My dreams were full of odd swirling things that night: I was on one of the boats that had sat in the harbor, only it was in the middle of the ocean. I remember a sandstorm, and falling stars that burned my fingers but tasted like berries and frozen cream, and some strange shapeless demon made of black mist.
I have no such dreams now.
I have not had such a dream since I touched my blurstone and felt magic sing in my blood for the first time, like I had somehow known it would ever since my grandmother brushed my three-year-old hair and told me I was born for greater things than sand dunes, camels, and time.
Now, as I stand in the square waiting for the Lottery [name??] to begin, I think back to that old prophecy, delivered when I was six, and wonder if some of it might just be coming true.
Night falls suddenly indeed.
(June 29, 2017 - 10:08 pm)
Full Name: Komorebi Ashe
Age: 14, almost 15 (I'm willing to make him older for the sake of a ship if that comes up )
Birthdate: July 12
Gender: M
Height: umm, a little taller than "reuglar" but you wouldn't think he's super tall. He's no Abraham Lincoln. So um...5'3''? ''4? ''5? Somewhere around there?
Weight: Great. More numbers. How much is he supposed to weigh. Can I describe his build instead? When he was younger he was too skinny since they were poorer but now...He's not lanky or skinny. He's not the hulk either with giant muscles. He's average for his height, but he does have a bit of an athletic build and strong upper body, from helping his dad out at the docks and occassionally running errands. He's equally good at lifting stuff, running, and swimming...BUT he's not super in any of them. It's not like he trains or anything...any strength or skill he gets is from stuff in his daily life. He hates running.
I don't think I'm describing this well.
He's low-key athletic-build. He doesn't play any sports though. Do these people even play sports? I'm straying off-topic.
Appearance:
His appearance doesn't translate to an Earthen race or ethnicity by the way. He has light brown skin. He has brown hair that is a little darker than his skin. It's short and layered, with a couple bangs that always fall by the side of his face. He has a habit of pushing them back all the time. He washes it and when it's clean it's surprisingly soft, but it gets a rougher consistency if he puts this...(I don't know what to call it, it's some sort of jar of stuff people make used as a hair gel but it's not gel) very light stuff to keep it in place. Or if he's working a lot and getting dirty, which is often. His hair's probably the only part of his appearance he cares about a whole lot. Once in a while he'll dye it for no reason. He dyed it white once.
His eyes stand out and are bright gray, so pretty much silver. They are medium-sized, and slightly almond-like. He has freckle-like things--because they're basically freckles but more shaped like blotches and larger than freckles. If you're up close you can mistake them for lots of birthmarks. He has an actual birth mark on his upper arm, near his elbow. It's like an incomplete swirl.
Straight-edged nose. Bow top lip (not pointy, the curve of the bow is smooth) and a lower lips slightly wider than the top lip. Not in a depth kind of way, as in how full they are. The color is light pink. Doesn't stand ot against skin. He has an angels kisse/beauty mark/mole or whatever you want to call it by his ear, near his chin on the right side, and another by his other ear, farther away than the other one. They're not the protruding kind. They're basically just brown.
Default expression: Calm
Personality: He is social with people he knows. He trusts his moral intuitions and has a need and a drive to live by them. They were mostly instilled in him by his mother, who was He feels what’s right in their gut, and that matters and guides them. If they don’t listen to and act on that, it feels immoral. He's not very obviously passionate, or impetuous. Rather, he keeps those morals to himself. He's smart and deliberate who can weigh decisions and moralities carefully. Reasoning, intellectualizing and debate can be support for a felt morality– but those things can never make a fully satisfying morality in themselves. Some things are just wrong, no matter what pretty words you use to explain them. That's what drives him, as an underneath the surface thing.
Now, for less deep stuff XD. First off--his methods. His strongest method of dealing with situations is improvising. He's adaptive and finds his strength in responding quickly to whatever a situation throws at him. That does NOT mean he charges into things mindlessly or strong-arms them. Rather, he likes coming at situations from different angles, ususally on a shorter notice. He's a big picture kind of person. Details are more instinctive, although he has the capability to get them done.
He can be social, and doesn't necessarily mind itnroducing himself to new people, but he does gets paranoid about first impressions and if it'll affect an overall relationship. He doesn't aspire to be the most popular, but he does like to be liked. When someone is upset or has a problem, he finds he can't really comfort them and give verbal emotional feedback. Rather he approaches it from a practical angle. This is something that bothers him about himself but it's not something he can change.
He's not super bubbly or anything, but usually acts content, or calm as his default expression is.
He likes to laugh when other people say funny things but he doesn't make jokes a lot. Once he gets to know people, he gets really relaxed around them--the only time he gets paranoid is when he's not around him and he thinks about them.
He's not a creative ish person., unless you count just being deeply morally driven and contemplative (once again that doesn't show). He's more logical than being smart content-wise. Except with ocean/sailing stuff, and history he finds interesting. Prefers storytelling over reading.
Strengths (as in personality): Good at improvising, is determined. He has a very strong moral compass that drives him.
Weaknesses (as in personality): He THIS IS INCOMPLETE.
When it comes to decision making that takes a long time, he struggles and overthinks. He also, although he acts extroverted and nervous, sometimes gets nervous that he won't do something right, introduce himself the right way, or establish the wrong kind of personality. Basically, when he's in a situation or with people, he's good, but its when he's only with his thoughts that he starts to worry.
Greatest Motivation:
Greatest Flaw:
Greatest Fear: Being given a major role then not fulfilling it. Letting people down when he's being depended on.
One Word to Sum them up: Driven
Hogwarts House(s): Gryffindor and Slytherin, but not in the way you think. Ignore this maybe, because to get what I'd mean you'd have to read the Sorting Hat Chat method which I believe is a Tumblr site. If you want to take the time to do that to get to know him better, he is a Gryffindor primary and Slytherin secondary.
Social Status: His family started lower class but worked their way up to middle-class ish.
Magic Wielder?: Yes. (As requested.) He can direct wind.
I'll explain more specifically. It's a lot of explanation but a lot of limitations to....don't mistake its length for intentional OP-ness, BUT @September please let me know if it is too OP or needs to be adjusted. His magic is in two parts.
The first is that he can direct wind that is present, to a certain extent. If he's inside, unless he can't do anything unless he opens a window. He can take the wind that's already there and direct it, make it stronger if necessary. He can't like wave his arms around and make wind though. He can push things with it. He can direct it so that it hits something lightweight, but he can't specifically lift things. He can't fly or make other people fly.
The second is harder to explain, and he rarely uses it so he has to get into a specific emotional state of mind to do it. He can understand things the wind carry, in an abstract sense. If a bird is carried by the wind, he has some sense of it that's hard to put into words. I guess kind of understand a bit of its purpose, where it came from generally but here's the thing: birds don't actually think like that. He can't read the bird's mind or start talking to it. He doesn't suddenly have a detailed autobiography of the birds life. He just has a sense of the information the wind around the bird carries. Only that the wind carries, like its journey? Ugh I swear this makes sense in my head. This'll be the part less used.
Preferred Weapon: He prefers to avoid fighting. He was taught how to use a knife so he has that in his arsenal but he hates the idea of fighting with a knife. SO his preferred weapon is this thing he carries around. He has a metal and a wooden one. It's similarly used like a knife but it doesn't have a blade. It's a little long, so it would be used to hit, "stab" (though it shouldn't cut), push, etc. Like a sword-knife-staff-club thing but actually just a stick basically? He has a name for it but I don't know what that is yet.
Password: marshmallow fluff
Other: He's interested in baking. I think he has a friend who's a baker's kid. He likes dolphins and turtles. He wears a leather string/necklace thing around his neck.
He is open to shipping! :) :) :) :)
Backstory:
His backstory and his parent's backstory is sooooooooo important, just as important as his personality and some of the other things on here. I can't paste it out from my Doc though, my parents say lights out.
There are a couple incomplete sections but I will finish them I promise!
Sorry for any errors I have no time to edit. (Not that I usually am patient enough to do so :P
(June 29, 2017 - 10:59 pm)
*He is open to shipping! :) :) :) :) both genders
I think that might have been edited out, or I forgot to put it. The second is likely the case.
(June 30, 2017 - 8:14 pm)
continued...
Weaknesses (as in personality):
When it comes to decision making that takes a long time, he struggles and overthinks. He also, although he acts extroverted and nervous, sometimes gets nervous that he won't do something right, introduce himself the right way, or establish the wrong kind of personality. Basically, when he's in a situation or with people, he's good, but its when he's only with his thoughts that he starts to worry.
He can also get pretty clingy. He wants to know everything about the people he's with. He thinks it'll make it easier to be with them.
Greatest Motivation: Finding himself. He wants to be a unique person from his parents/family but at the same time he wants to make them proud.
Greatest Flaw: Um. Um...keeping his feelings inside?
Backstory:
His parents, before him...
His mother lived on an isolated island off the coast of Cambria. Her family was very rich and had a strict set of family/cultural values. She wasn't allowed to leave the island except brief sailboat outings. is father was a sailor, and still is. He made a trip to the mother's island for some practical reason. She ran away with him. Her family was angry and cut her off, so she basically had nothing except what she had taken with her. The father was really poor.
The mother gave Komorebi his name, which means light shining through trees. She had light powers, as her family always had, and hoped he would too.
Growing up, his mother has strong beliefs, and had a fiery personality, simmering fire beneath a pot with a lid. His father was more practical, less emotional. He worked hard, and got them up to the status of a middle-class family.
Maybe one of his parents used to be rich but something happened and they were exiled are cut off from that family so that they weren't rich. So now they are middle-class or poor. Did this happen when boy was alive.
Now although he had the name of one. Who gave him that name because that was what they wanted him to be, he still had another parent. They had a different idea I guess and they had argued about it initially I don't know if they kept being better about it probably not. Whoever that parent was that is who The boy actually resembles. This parent is also dead or missing because I'm already looks like that parent and it's a reminder to his other parent a sad reminder of the other parent. MOTHER is alive,
So Komorebi is kindled by the stories and life lessons and stuff from his mother, it's more of an under the surface thing. His father teaches him how to live, and he's learned to be practical. His methods. He struggles to find a balance between the two and at the same time be unique.
His mother died, not too long ago. His father changed.
(July 1, 2017 - 7:58 pm)
Okay, I'm super sorry about this, but. . . I have remade the entire calender system, meaning that all the dates are weird now. . .
Anyways, here's a chart-ish thing that should help:
Behold. . . THE CAMBRIAN CALENDAR SYSTEM!!!!
Each year in Cambria is 364 days, and it's split up into 13 months, each with 28 days. Each month is named after a goddess.
The Month of Aishah: January 1- January 28
The Month of Ciana: January 29- February 25
The Month of Kalama: February 26- March 22
The Month of Makora: March 23- April 20
The Month of Hinata: April 21- May 17
The Month of Lusine: May 18- June 14
The Month of Seren: June 15- July 13
The Month of Zora: July 14- August 10
The Month of Aeron: August 11- September 7
The Month of Nysa: September 8- October 5
The Month of Tallis: October 6- November 3
The Month of Ila: November 4- December 1
The Month of Morana: December 2- December 30
And while I'm at it, I'll explain the religion:
Cambrians worship a set of 13 goddesses:
Aishah of Life
Morana of Death
Ciana of Light
Aeron of Darkness
Kalama of Flame
Tallis of Water
Makora of Air
Ila of Earth
Nysa of Change
Zora of Dawn
Hinata of Sun
Lusine of Moon
Seren of Stars
If you're a magic wielder, you pray to the goddess whom your powers stem from. If you're not a magic wielder, pray to the goddess whom you're most in need of at the moment.
Ex: If your crops are dying, pray to Tallis and Ila
If your house is burning, pray to Kalama and Tallis
If it's been raining for a week straight, pray to Hinata
You get the point. Anyways, since this is a medival high-fantasy world, the goddesses are real in Cambria and the surrounding landmass who also worshipps these goddesses. They actually do exist, but they won't always answer your prayers. Also, there's no hierarchy or anything. They're all equal.
(June 29, 2017 - 11:49 pm)
Considering Sinn reads minds, which goddess would he pray to? I'm thinking Ciana would make the most sense?
(June 30, 2017 - 11:06 am)
Either Aishah or Ciana. I'll post goddess personalities later.
(July 1, 2017 - 1:54 pm)
I'll start again from personality.
Personality: Presents herself as sunny, cheerfull, and frolicksome. Takes and optimistic view of the present, always pointing out the positive, but a pessimistic view of the future. Doesn't believe in making plans because they probably won't work. Enjoys physical challenges. When confronted with a psychological challenge, pales a bit but refuses to give up. Doesn;t worry much about what others think of her. Protective of her friends, especially those younger than herself. Enjoys dancing, playing, singing, and other actions that may be considered childish, but able to switch to "stern adult mode" in seconds. (I'm not too good at making personalities, so if you're confused about something, please ask me questions. I'm honestly a bit confused myself, do you have any suggestions to make her traits fit together more?)
Strengths: Cheerfulness, perserverance (however complain-y she may get), ability to make people listen.
Weaknesses: Afraid of letting people down, works in broad strokes and misses details, aforementioned aversion to planning, tends to ignore old friends or even people she used to know after she meets new ones. (this may prove a problem if she meets an enemy, makes friends with them, and ignores her old group)
Greatest Motivation: Cheering, reinvigorating, impressing, and protecting her "group."
Greatest Fear: If you mean a phobia, enclosed spaces, but if you're looking for more insight into character, letting down her friends.
One Word: Feckless? Not sure if that works.
Hogwarts House: Hufflepuff
Social Status: Well, her family's is high, because they are magic wielders and her father is a merchant, but she's personally pretty hidden among the peasants, playing mostly with peasant children.
Magic Wielder: Yes
Password: marshmallow fluff
May I add some "Other?" If so:
Other: Can be shipped with boys or girls (she's bi), and loves blackcurrant jam and dark purple.
AAHHHH I'm so late sorry sorry sorry I hope I can still do this thing.
(June 30, 2017 - 7:20 am)
Whoops I forgot something.
Preferred Weapon: A slightly blunt dagger, not one of those wickedly sharp ones.
(June 30, 2017 - 7:22 am)
By the way, I'm going to be camping from tomorrow to Monday, so I'll post when I get back.
(June 30, 2017 - 7:05 pm)
The Equinox would be in the month of Nysa, right?
(June 30, 2017 - 7:28 pm)
@Pepper Star, yes.
(July 1, 2017 - 1:31 pm)
I'm going to post in two parts (crossing my fingers for the italics!)~
Ilia~
Year of the Copper Mountain
Running, running.
Then falling.
Then bricks, then blood.
Ilia sits up, wide eyed, glaring at the offending stone, sticking up just enough to trip her. She stands up, brushing the dust off of her skirt. A flash of pink catches her eye, and she knows for certainty that it’s Evy. Ilia isn’t planning on losing tag again— the last time, they made her jump off the docks. She was sneezing for at least a week. Ilia looks again for Evy’s signature pink skirt, but it’s the Autumnal Equinox festival and there’s so many people. Someone taps her on the back, and Ilia whirls around just in time to see Evy smirk at her before moving through the crowd. Ilia sighs, pushing through after her. Soon enough, she’s at the docks, but no sign of Evy— not that she cares. The trading boats are all here, awe-inspiring things of wood and metal and carved figureheads of mermaids and sea dragons. Ilia walks down to the edge of the docks, towards the grandest boat of all, named ‘The Fallen Sun’. And suddenly, she hears a high pitched giggle behind her.
Falling, falling.
Then sinking.
Then water, then air.
(July 1, 2017 - 2:34 pm)
AHGGG MY POST GOT DELEATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *fumes* THAT TOOK ME FOREVER TO WRITE
*sighs* alrighty, here's some questions ill ask before I start writing again.
Will you pick who has magic and what type of magic it is? And are we starting on the boat or the festival?
(My charrie's Jaheem Cayman)
(July 1, 2017 - 6:40 pm)
Nope, if you'd like your character to have magic, just let me know. The only thing is that the magic is very limited, so those who can do magic can only do it to a certain scope. Secondly, we're starting at the festival and Choosing ceremony, but a lot of us are doing a flashback to a better Cambria.
(July 2, 2017 - 5:09 pm)
