Character: Foxpaw: a recent apprentice in SunClan's overflowing apprentice den due to the large amount of kits.  Foxpaw is a red she-cat with black ears and a white tail.

We will make up the characters as we go.  Enjoy!

Edemame says waik, I am awake silly!

Foxpaw proudly strutted away from the Highrock, her head held high.  SunClan chanted her new name. "Foxpaw, foxpaw, foxpaw!"  Foxpaw was glad to finally begin her training.  She had badly wanted to start for a long time now.  Rainpaw bounded up to her, her mew full of excitement, " I'm glad that you're finally an apprentice too!" she mewled " Let me show you the den."  Rainpaw had been a playmate of Foxpaw when they were both kits.  Now they even had the same mentor!  There was such an abundance of kits that each warrior had to take on two or three apprentices, a difficult task, but the clan was happy to have so many budding warriors.  Foxpaw let Rainpaw lead her away from the Highrock and across the clearing to the apprentice den-well one of them.  They had two now, the second built recently since there wasn't enough room for the apprentices.  Foxpaw walked into the shady hollow and sniffec around, trying to find a good spot to sleep later.  She eventually settled on a nest next to one that smelled of Rainpaw.  Rainpaw led her out of the den.  "C'mon you've had a long day, lets share a mouse."  Foxpaw was happy to oblige.

Several days had passed since Rainpaw had offically annouced her decision to join the medicine den. Sunpaw was stunned, but recovered shortly. Foxpaw had seemed less surprised; Rainpaw had obviously told her about it before it was announced. Now he was out on a hunting mission from Windwhisper. He shook his head, tossing out all the cluttered thoughts, and focused on the catch he was about to make. The robin pecked at the ground, unaware he was creeping up on it. About seven feet away, he stopped, crouched down low, and sprung high above the bird. It gave a cry of alarm and fluttered up, but because he had jumped above instead of at it, he clamped it in his paws and delivered the killing bite. Dropping to the ground, he set down his catch and buried it where he could pick it up later. As of so far, he had caught two mice and a vole, and adding the robin to it was a very good haul in all. I should probably return now, he thought. I think I've got enough. He dug up the robin, returned to the place of his other catches, and grabbed them all in his mouth.

Wow, this is a lot more than I thought it was, he thought. He couldn't possibly carry this all by himself. He was debating whether to find a cat to help him or transport two while burying the other two when Windwhisper emerged from the leaves, purring. "Need some help with that?" she meowed teasingly, grabbing the mice. He nodded thankfully and picked up the other tow pieces of fresh-kill. When they pushed into the camp, Hawkpaw bounded up and examined them. "Wow!" he exclaimed. "That's so much!" Sunpaw quickly darted over to the fresh-kill pile and spat his catches out, not wanting to attract a lot of attention, even though Hawkpaw gleefully returned with Badgerpaw a few moments later. Even though his ears flattened in embarrassment, inside Sunpaw felt proud. He was so close to his final assesment, only half a moon. Turning to Windwhisper, he asked her "What are we going to do next?"

"I thought I'd let you get a bite to eat, then do some double-team battle training in the clearing," she said. Sunpaw nodded and grabbed the robin he had caught off the pile and began to dig into it. After he had finished it, he looked around the camp, licking his lips. Based on who Windwhisper was talking to, it looked like he was battling with Badgerpaw and Lilypetal. He felt a twinge of lonliness as he looked at Foxpaw and Rainpaw sharing a mouse. They were still as close as ever, even if Rainpaw had become a medicine cat. He didn't have many apprentice friends in SunClan. Well, maybe it's time to make some, he thought, half irked at himself. He spotted Beechpaw at the other end of the camp, grooming his fur. Sunpaw took a deep breath, then walked over to him. "...Hi," he said hesitantly. Beechpaw looked up, surprised, but returned his greeting. He looked nervous too, as if neither knew exactly what they should be doing.

The first few minutes were bumpy, but eventually Beechpaw and Sunpaw slipped into a smoother conversation. When Sunpaw was called over by Windwhisper, he felt much, much better than before. He had finally made a friend. And from the looks of it, he thought. Beechpaw did too.

Rainpaw was much happier now that she was training as a medicine cat.  Rippleriver was too.  He had been worried about the lack of a medicine cat apprentice, but now there was a promising new one.  Rainpaw loved the smell of the herbs, the peace and quiet of the den, and most of all being able to help other cats, to heal them.  It was magnificent, and Rainpaw knew that it was her calling.

Rippleriver spoke, "Rainpaw prepare a poultice of Burdock Root and Broom, Adderstrike has badly hurt his leg in a border skirmish."  Rainpaw frowned at the bad news concerning her previous mentor, but quickly and cheerfully got to work preparing the poultice.  One thing was still clouding Rainpaw's mind; Stormpaw.

Foxpaw couldn't have been happier!  She and Rainpaw were back to being best friends, Adderstrike had lost the surly attitude, and her training was going extraordinarily well.  Everything was right.  Too right, Foxpaw realized.  Nothing was ever quite perfect, something was bound to go wrong soon.  She was going to her first Gathering tonight, and Rainpaw was too!  Something wet landed on Foxpaw's nose.  She yelped.  Next to her, Rainpaw mewled in amusement.

"It's just a bit of snow silly!" Foxpaw looked around, awed by the white flakes starting to come down. She had heard about snow, but never experienced it.  The stories didn't do it justice! Rainpaw leaped up.

"Hey, where are you going?" Foxpaw mewed.

"I'm going to gather herbs.  The first snow means that plants will start to shrivel and die as it gets colder.  I had better stock up while I can!"  Foxpaw stood.

"I'm coming too!"  Foxpaw felt a sense of importance, she needed to help her clan.  They needed her.

Rainpaw nodded, satisfied.  "You can help me gather herbs and hunt.  We'll need to get lots of food too, the prey will start to hide away.  Maybe you can get us a nice, fat squirrel."

Foxpaw looked grave, even though she knew that Rainpaw was teasing.  "I'll try."

"I know you will."  The two she-cats padded off into the forest.  Foxpaw gazed around.  The forest lookec completely different now that snow was staring to accumulate.  Rainpaw searched for signs of green, she was very successful.  The apprentices each grabbed a large bundle of herbs and berries in their mouths and walked back to camp, dumping the herbs in front of a pleased Rippleriver.  They went back out, this time for prey their catch was very plentiful.  A fat squirrel, two voles, a pigeon, five mice, and Foxpaw's pride; a huge rabbit.  The cats went back and forth, switching between hunting and herbs.  They were lucky that hunt, prey wouldn't be that plentiful this leafbare.

When the two cats returned to camp, the strange white dust called snow was still falling steadily. Adderstrike and Streampelt were clearing off the fresh-kill pile which was completely covered by now. "Sorry Foxpaw, I've got to go put these away so they don't get too damp," Rainpaw mumbled through her mouthful of leaves, and then rushed off. Foxpaw looked around the clearing, and saw Beechpaw talking with Sunpaw. Eventually Sunpaw walked off toward the fresh-kill pile, sneezing as snowflakes covered his nose. Beechpaw looked pleased with himself, but at the same time disappointed that his new friend had left. Foxpaw was pleased to be going out on the dusk patrol before the Gathering, but she was going to be the only apprentice there. She padded over to Beechpaw who was loking a bit lonely and said, "I'm headed out on the dusk patrol in a few moments and I was wondering if you wanted to come." There was a moment of silence as Beechpaw stared at her, but finally he said, "Uh, um, yeah. Sure." He sounded a bit hesitant. "I mean, you don't have to, but I'm going to be the only apprentice there and if you came along that would be great," Foxpaw said, her words tumbling out of her mouth before she could stop them. "No, I'd love to! It's just that no one has ever taken me on a patrol before becuse everyone thinks I'm stupid and even my mentor doesn't like me," He said quickly, and then immediatly looked down at his paws. Foxpaw said nothing, shocked. He was one of the best apprentices in the den! He was strong and light on his feet and he almost always brought back the most prey! "I don't think you're stupid," Foxpaw said quietly. "You're way better than me at pretty much everything."  Beechpaw's eyes widened as he lifted his head, glowing with pride.

There had been no problems that the dusk patrol had encountered, and by the time they got back, Beechpaw and Foxpaw were joking around and talking like they had been friends since the dawn of time. When there was a break in the conversation, Beechpaw looked over at Foxpaw, who was waiting nervously for the clan leader to start organizing the cats who were attending the Gathering. She glanced over at him too, and they exchanged reassuring looks. Beechpaw stepped slightly closer to her, just so that he was brushing her shoulder gently. There was no more time for reassuring looks or chit-chat anymore though, because one by one, cats stepped forward as their names were called for the Gathering.

The Clan bounded throught the forest.  Beechpaw, Rainpaw, and Foxpaw stayed side by side the whole time.  They were all silent.  It was Rainpaw and Foxpaw's first gathering.  They entered the huge clearing, concealed by a huge tree in the center with still leafy branches cascading to the ground.  The moon was full and brightly shining in the sky.  As the other clans arrived  cats mingled together, regardless of Clan for this night.  Foxpaw enthusiastically joined a group of gossiping apprentices.  A HollowClan cat was dramatically telling the story of when he fell in the lake and managed to swim back to shore.  His movements were animated, showing how he moved his paws and legs to swim to shore.

"And then I reached the shore and got out of the water."

Other cats peppered him with questions.  "Were you scared?"

Pokepaw lifted his head proudly.  "No."

Pokepaw didn't get a chance to answer more than one question when a call rang out from the Branch.  Foxpaw turned her head.  The leaders were gathered on the Branch quietly waiting for the clearing to fall silent.  The chattering stopped.

Moonstar spoke first.  "All is well in SunClan.  The prey is still running, despite the fact that leafbare is quickly advancing.  We have many kits and a new warrior has been made recently.  Splashheart, congratulations.  SunClan, FireClan, HollowClan, MarshClan, and MoorClan cats chanted Splashheart's name.  Splashheart proudly stood.  As the noise died down, the rest of the leaders spoke in turn, each declaring plentiful prey and good fortune.

Owlstar was the last to speak.  "Someone has been stealing HollowClan prey."  Gasps rang out around the clearing.  "And I accuse SunClan."

Moonstar narrowed her eyes, the fur along her back rising slightly and a growl rising in her throat.  "What proof do you have?"

"We have found bones of prey on our side of the border, stinking of SunClan."

"Why would we need your prey?  We have plenty of our own, thank you."

"I don't know.  You tell me you dirty, prey stealing foxhearted dungfaces!"

Moonstar looked ready to rip Owlstar's throat out, but she stayed rooted to her spot.  "How dare you accuse my Clan of stealing prey!  If anything your Clan is stealing our prey!  The truce was broken.  Everyone gazed up at the sky.  A cloud fell over the moon, declaring the Gathering cut short.  Moonstar leaped down from the branch, leading her Clan back to camp.  When they entered, Foxpaw was sullen and worried.  She shouldered past other cats quickly making her way to her nest.  She wasn't in mood for questions.  Sleep was what Foxpaw needed.  Foxpaw heard Beechpaw pad in.  He curled up beside her, gently grooming her fur.  The rythmic licking gently rocked her to sleep.

Foxpaw kept waking up. Her mind was filled with thoughts of the Gathering, how Owlstar had accused her clan of stealing prey. It was outrageous! Nobody in Sunclan would ever steal prey from another clan! They had more than enough prey piled on the fresh-kill pile because of all the apprentices. When she finally drifted off to sleep, she dreamed of the Great Badger War, which had started when she was three moons old, and lasted until her fifth moon. That war had also killed her wonderful, strong, kind father who had been the Sunclan deputy at the time. In this dream, the worst one yet, she had just defeated a badger, and was whirling around only to see a large badger swipe forcefully at her beloved father. He was knocked to the ground, blood flowing out of a wound on his flank. "Father!" She yelled, and was about to go to him when she felt someone shaking her. She jolted awake, shivering uncontrollably, and looked up at Beechpaw's worried face. "I know you're not alright, so I won't ask you if you are," he said softly. "But you were calling for your father. I just want to say that I know what it feels like to lose someone you love," he finished.

Foxpaw appreciated Beechpaw's concern, but she felt like she needed to talk to Rainpaw. She missed her friend terribly now that she had moved to the medicine den, and hadn't spoken to her in a while since Rainpaw had always been so busy gathering herbs and treating other cats. Once Beechpaw had fallen back asleep, Foxpaw quietly slipped out of the den and into the crisp night air. She could smell leafbare coming. Quietly she made her way over to the medicine den and peeked inside. It was almost completely dark inside, and Foxpaw padded carefully to the back where her friend's nest was, so not to disturb the tidy piles of herbs that were stacked on the floor and shelves. She managed to make her way to the back of the den without making too much noise, and could just make out the two nests in the darkness. But when she looked closer, she had to restrain herself from gasping in surprise and fear. Only one of the nests was full. Rainpaw was gone.

Sunpaw picked up a squirrel from the fresh-kill pile and padded over to an overhanging rock to eat. Looking over to the apprentice's den, he saw Foxpaw morosely trudge out. Half a moon had passed since Rainpaw had been found missing in the medicine den. Since then, a definte change had come over Foxpaw. He step was less cheerful and she didn't have the same bright chatter and spirit as before. Sunpaw watched, taking a bite of his squirrel, as Beechpaw walked over to her and pressed his muzzle to her forehead. She sighed and returned the gesture. They seem awfully close... though Sunpaw. A flash of envy raked through him, but he shook it off. He was over Foxpaw now... and even if he wasn't, he wouldn't want to take her away from Beechpaw. Finishing off his squirrel, he licked his lips and stretched. Then a bolt of excitement flashed through him. Of course!

Today was his warrior assessment!

He bolted out from under the overhang, nearly crashing into Adderstrike on the way. He sidestepped out of the way, nearly falling over. "Whoa," he said. "Watch out, Sunpaw. You nearly flattened me!" his eyes sparkled with mischief. "Warriors can't go around bowling over others!" Sunpaw felt a flash of worry for a second, then noticed the shine in Adderstrike's eyes. He flicked his ear and flashed past Adderstrike, calling out a quick greeting. Windwhisper was just entering the camp when he bounded up to her.

"Windwhisper!" he said, a mew in his tone. "Windwhisper, when's my assessment?" She calmly flicked an ear. "Not until you learn how to behave like a warrior," she meowed offhandedly. Sunpaw sat up straight and puffed out his chest, willing himself to be still. Windwhisper purred and led him out of the camp. He followed, strutting proudly. When they had reached a little distance out and away from the camp, Windwhisper stopped and turned to him. "Alright," she said. "Go out by the FireClan border and hunt near WillowTrees. Make sure not to go near the HollowClan border though," she growled. "We don't want any... mistakes." Sunpaw nodded angrily. How dare HollowClan straight-out accuse us of prey-stealing?! Those fox-hearts!

Windwhisper waved her tail to him as he padded out into the forest to go hunt. Casting a glance back at her, he thought of how she'd be watching him perform the whole time. His tail drooped, worried for failure, but he pushed the thought out of his mind and continued on. Once he reached WillowTrees, he opened his mouth to scent for prey. A flash of movement at his eye alerted him to the presence of a squirrel. He slipped into a hunting crouch and silently stalked the creature. Suddenly it sat up, twitching its ears. How did it hear me?! he cursed. Not wanting for it to run off, he sprang at the animal. The squirrel chittered in alarm and sped away. Sunpaw chased it up a fallen log, and in a last desperation he lashed out a claw and grabbed the squirrel's tail. It stopped with a jerk and he pulled it back, delivering a the killing bite to its neck. he sat up, pleased, and hoped Windwhisper was watching. He buried the prey and began to search for more.

By midday he had caught a sparrow, a vole, and mouse, adding it to his squirrel. Immensely pleased with himself, he went back to retireve all his prey. But as he was about to dig up the squirrel, a musk tang hit his nose. He recoiled away from the sharp stench. What is it? he thought. Racking his mind, he realized witha sinking feeling what he could smell. "It's a-" was all he managed to get out before the fox burst from the bush. Snarling, it leaped for him. Sunpaw jerked away, barely missing the fox's snapping jaws by a hair. Breathing heavily, he turned to face it.

What can I do?!? What can I do?! he thought frantically as the fox circled him. Then one thought steeled his will. I'm a warrior! he thought. I stay and fight! He swiped at the fox with a wrenching screech. His claws made contact with its nose and it yelped, blood dripping onto the ground. The fox growled, anger in its eyes. It snapped at him again, but he managed to avoid the jaws and slide beneath the fox, slashing at its underside. The fox howled in pain and grabbed him with its jaws, ducking under its stomach. Sunpaw scrabbled at the earth frantically, but the fox dragged him out and tossed him across the forest. Sunpaw thumped into a tree, knocking the breath out of him. He lay slumped there for a second as the fox prowled up. As it neeared, he kicked out his his hind paws, clawing at the fox. But the fox simply brushed off the attacks.

Sunpaw's breath was coming in short gasps now. As the fox lunged for the killing strike, he raised his claws and brought them slashing down in one final blow. Suddenly there was yelp, a thump, and a hiss, and Sunpaw's claws connected with nothing. He opened his eyes and saw Windwhisper grappling with the fox. She had come to his rescue! he leapt down from the root and joined his mentor in battling the fox. Finally the injured animal wriggled from their grasp and pelted into the trees, heading for the FireClan border. Sunpaw fell on his side, breathing heavily, and looked up at WIndwhisper. She was smiling at him, a purr rumbling in her chest. "Let's get you back to camp," she meowed, and helped him up.

When they entered the camp, Rippleriver gave a gasp of horror and was at their side in an instant. "What happened?" he asked, sniffing the bite on Sunpaw's neck. He winced at his nose touched the sorest spot. Windwhisper answered for him. "We fought a fox, is what happened," she meowed. "but I didn't do much. Sunpaw weakened it off for me first." Badgerpaw came skipping up, eyes shining. "You fought a fox?" he squealed. "Was it tough?" Sunpaw nodded, to sore to reply. Badgerpaw darted off to find his friends as more of the camp arrived.

Windwhisper was answering qusetions everywhere. "Yes, it was a big male. No, it didn't die; it headed towards the FireClan border. I only arrived in time, yes." The crowd parted as Moonstar walked through. "A fox, huh?" she quietly mewed. Sunpaw felt lost for words, confronted by the leader of his Clan. He finally managed to sqeeuze out a weak "Yes." Moonstar looked thoughtful, then leaped up HighRock and called a Clan meeting.

As cats gathered around the rock, Moonstar called Sunpaw and Windwhisper to the front. Sunpaw's heart began pounding. Surely this was it! He was about to become a warrior! Moonstar looked down at him. "Congratulations on passing your assesment, Sunpaw." She turned to Windwhisper. "Has your apprentice trained under and understand the warrior code?" she asked. Windwhisper nodded, dipping her head respectfully. "He has." Moonstar turned back to Sunpaw.

"Sunpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend this Clan, even at the cost of your life." Sunpaw took a huge gulp of breath and said "I do," with as much strength as he could muster. "Then by the powers of StarClan I give you your warrior name. Sunpaw, from now on you will be known as Sunburst."

All around him the Clan called out "Sunburst! SUnburst! SUnburst!' Sunburst felt as if he would explode with joy. He was finally a warrior!

Foxpaw joined in with the chant.

"Sunburst!  Sunburst!  Sunburst!"  Sunburst glanced at Foxpaw with an unreadable expression.  When he saw her looking he quickly looked away.  Sunburst shyly padded away from the Highrock towards her.

"Do you want to share a rabbit?"  Foxpaw was surprised.  He was a warrior now and he still wanted to spend time with her?

A purr rumbled in her throat.  "Sure."  Then Foxpaw noticed Beechpaw looking at her jealously.  "Can Beechpaw come too?"

Sunburst's expression became unreadable again.  "Of course."  Foxpaw headed over to the fresh-kill pile with the two toms at her heels.  Sunburst grabbed a rabbit from the pile and Beechpaw took a shrew for himself.  They sat by the apprentice's den.

Foxpaw sighed.  "I wish Rainpaw could join us."  But doubt filled her mind.  Where had she been lately?  Her mind traveled back to the empty, cold nest.  Rainpaw was hiding something.  Foxpaw knew that it wasn't like her, but there was no other explanation.  As if StarClan had heard her wishes and fulfilled them from behind them came Rainpaw, a mouse dangling from her jaws.

She mewed softly to Foxpaw.  "I'm sorry, I haven't been able to spend much time with you.  I've been so busy..."  Foxpaw looked away.  What had she been busy with?

"Please go away."  She mumbled to Rainpaw.  Hurt filled her gaze.  Rainpaw slowly backed off, to sit by herself.

Foxpaw couldn't sleep. It had been three days since Rainpaw came back, and the whole camp seemed to be talking about her all the time. No one seemed the least bit suspicious, they were all just glad that she had come back. During the time that Rainpaw had been gone, Foxpaw had always imagined that she would be so happy when Rainpaw finally returned, but now she just felt betrayed. Every time she padded past the medicine den, Rainpaw would glance hopefully at her, but Foxpaw kept her eyes on the ground and didn't speak to her. The thing was, she wanted desperatly to be friends with Rainpaw again, but she didn't know how to speak to her after what she had done. She felt like she had no one to talk to that would listen.

Beechpaw noticed Foxpaw tossing and turning in her nest. He wanted to help, but it seemed like Foxpaw didn't want to talk to him these days. She always avoided anyone's gaze, and only spoke when it was absolutely necessary. It didn't help that Sunburst was always trying to spend time with her, even though he was a warrior! Beechpaw also noticed that her fur was becoming matted and dirty, and she was yet again falling behind on her training. He knew his warrior assessment was going to be soon, and he wanted to become a warrior alongside Foxpaw. Finally, her breathing slowed, and she was asleep. But now it was Beechpaw who couldn't get to sleep, so he decided to take a short walk. He quietly made his way to the tunnel that led out of camp, and dipped his head to Willowheart who was on guard. He breathed a sigh of relief as he padded through the forest, the moon glimmering above his head. He hadn't been walking for very long when he heard a noise. As he listened more carefully, he realised that it was voices that he heard. He quietly padded forward toward the voices until they seemed to be right in front of him. Beechpaw crouched behind a cluster of brambles, perked his ears up, and listened.

Foxpaw was awakened by a rustle as someone left the nest.  She sighed, her sleep had been so shallow lately!  Foxpaw decided to take a walk to her favorite spot.  Beechpaw's nest was empty also.  Where was he?  She padded out of the camp, through the tunnel.  A dot if light fur was up ahead, visibke in the darkness.  Beechpaw!  Was he out for a midnight stroll too?  A spark of playfulness lit Foxpaw's eyes.  She decided to follow him.  Foxpaw silently and quickly stalked him through the wood.  She shivered.  It was freezing.  Leafbare had reached its peak and prey was scarce.  Finally Beechpaw stopped.  He crouched low behind a bush.  What was he doing?  Foxpaw perked her ears.  She could hear soft, murmering voices.  Why were there so many cats around this late?  Foxpaw crept up beside him.  The spark of playfulness still lived on hopefully.  "What are you doing here Beechpaw?"

He flinched, startled.  "Be quiet."  He hissed.

"Who is on the other side of the bush?"  Foxpaw inquired curiously.

Beechpaw gulped.  "Rainpaw.  And another medicine cat."

The playfulness died.  "What?!"  Foxpaw marched out into the clearing where Rainpaw was while Beechpaw watched in silent horror.  Rainpaw still murmered to the other cat.  Then she saw Foxpaw.

"F-f-Foxpaw, what are you doing here?"  The other cat looked startled and afraid.

Anger built up in Foxpaw's chest.  So this was what Rainpaw had been doing!  She flew up in a rage.  "So this is what you have been doing lately!  This is why you're so distant and tired!" she spat at Rainpaw.

Rainpaw cowered before Foxpaw.  Then her stubborn nature kicked in.  "Yes this is what I've been doing!  And I'm in love!"  Rainpaw rubbed her nose against her mate's flank.  "I know that I'm breaking the warrior code, but you should be supportive!  I suppose you are going to tell Moonstar now."

The two she-cats glared at each other viciously for a few seconds.  Foxpaw added.  "No, I'm not going to tell, because I'm a good friend.  Unlike you!"

The anger melted from Rainpaw's gaze.  "You are a good friend.  I'm sorry."

Sorry!  Sorry was all she was going to say?  "Well sorry isn't going to cut it this time, Rainpaw."  Foxpaw meowed coldly.  She stormed off in the direction of camp.
