Random Thoughts/Things?

Random Thoughts/Things?

I wasn’t really sure what to call this thread, but I’ve had this idea floating around in my head for awhile now. Basically, anyone can post anything here. Any random thought you have, any random thing that happens to you, any random question that pops into your mind. Have fun, and don’t be afraid to be random.

Here's a question: who invented texting abbreviations? Who was the first person to use "lmk" or "lol"? And how did the abbreviations catch on?

*takes deep breath*

SMS abbreviations were derived from telegraph abbreviations with the same goal; to convey as much information as possible in as few letters as possible. Originally, SMS only allowed a maximum of 160 characters per message (which is only about 30 words with spaces), and companies would charge a small fee for every message sent, and recieved in some cases. Features of early phone messaging systems encouraged users to use abbreviations, and 2G systems made text entry difficult, and abbreviations were especially important if you didn't want to spend five minutes asking your mom or dad when they'll come home.

We're all just a lot of happy pen pals writing worlds within worlds, kind of like in The Last Battle. (that isn't really a spoiler unless you've read The Last Battle, in which case it's definitely not a spoiler :) )

Which do you think is worse: using a really eye-catching word like "yam" in a nonfiction or fiction piece with the risk of that word dragging attention away from the rest of the sentence/paragraph/page which is more important, or using a synonym if there is one and risk heavily overusing words/potentially boring your reader/not helping vocabulary literacy

*groans*

It looks like I'll be overthinking poetry and fiction pieces I write even more heavily from now on...if I get to that stage in revision.

(context: studying for my history test. the writers of the source i'm reading used the word "yam" instead of sweet potatoes, which is nice bc the word yam has a sort of onomotopoeia--which I may or may not have spelled correctly hahaha--that seems to taste and feel exactly like mashed up yams. Sweet potatoes just don't for some reason, maybe because there are too many other associations with the word "sweet". Aaaaaand now I've distracted myself from studying for my history test, because I'm obsessing over the word yam.)

(but for some reason the word yum doesn't feel mashed up...it feels sticky. Like yam juice. Huh.)

why is that analysis of the word "yam" so spot on?? you're right; it feels exactly like mashed-up yams.

i think it's totally cool to use eye-catching words, as you put it, as long as you're using them for clarification or to reduce repetitiveness---it's a different story if you're just sticking them in there to sound pretentious (which i don't think you are, but still :p). also it helps if you use fairly fancy words or have a relatively sophisticated tone throughout the piece of writing so that you aren't just whipping a word like "ubiquitous" or something out of nowhere (which would then distract from the rest of the writing). idk, just my thoughts. yay, yams!

yep agree with pangolin :) but I don't think you could manage to sound pretentious using the word yam! would love to see someone try though...
