Random Thoughts/Things?

Random Thoughts/Things?

I wasn’t really sure what to call this thread, but I’ve had this idea floating around in my head for awhile now. Basically, anyone can post anything here. Any random thought you have, any random thing that happens to you, any random question that pops into your mind. Have fun, and don’t be afraid to be random.

Emphasis is important. I can say:

"I didn't steal your money," "I didn't steal your money," "I didn't steal your money," "I didn't steal your money," and "I didn't steal your money."

And they all mean different things.

One means "I didn't steal your money, but somebody did." Another means "I didn't steal your money, I swear, I'm innocent." Then we have "I didn't steal your money, I just borrowed it," "I didn't steal your money, but I stole somebody else's," and "I didn't steal your money, but I stole your car and your house and your pet snake."

Never underestimate emphasis. Just like commas.

*Nods*

Good point. And accents also. For example, as my Spanish teacher said at the beginning of last year, in Spanish there is papá (Dad) and papa (potato). It wouldn't do to mix those up!

Mr. Potato Head comes to mind. . . .

plus, "papa" can ALso mean "pope"; the difference is that "the pope" is "el papa" and "the potato" is "la papa". It would be even worse to mix those up XD

in japanese, this isn't quite the same as emphasis on a word, but where the pitch accent (in english we have stress accents, like english or procrastinate-- in japanese the accent is based on which syllable is pitched higher) is can change its meaning.  For example, ame (high-low) is rain and ame (low-high) is candy.

aditionally japanese particle wa can have the same effect as the emphasis you mentioned. in japanese, "particles" are inbetween almost every word in a sentence.  here is how you structure the sentence in japanese:

[I] ga [you] no [money] o [didn't steal.]

However if you replaced one of the particles in the sentence with wa, it would have the same effect as emphasis in the sentence in english-- if you replaced ga with wa, it would mean "I didn't steal your money (but someone else may have)" and if you replaced o with wa, it would mean "i didn't steal your money (but i may have stolen something else.)

Tsuki, I think you are reffering to Chinese. In Japanese, where you hold it or put a dicratal mark changes the meaning, not the pitch.

Does anybody find it strange how in SIs people always guess Darkling and Darkvine together but never Tsuki and Suki together?

Also, I've heard/read/whatever a few people point this out, but has anybody else noticed how one of the defining charictaristics (I definetely did not spell that right) of the CB is fOrMs? ALL THE FORMS! There's seriously so. Many. Forms. Which is wonderful and I find it hilarious. But I find lots of weird things hilarious.

It's funny how you can know intellectually that the world is beautiful and life is worth living, but still feel awful. Emotions aren't logical.

I am so bookish.

A Darker Shade of Magic has a cool cover. The black-red-white scheme is in Gallant and This Savage Song, too. What if books were color-coded by author?
