I don't think this merits it's own thread, it's just a random idea I had, but it's long, so I'm very sorry, admins.

I think Jean Valjean is in love with a man named Elliot.

So. I usually hate the idea of shipping characters outside of canon, especially in stories as close to my heart as Les Misérables. Marius and Cosette? Yes, they’re in love, they literally sing a song together called A Heart Full of Love. Grantaire and Enjolras? Yes, Grantaire spends all his time either drinking or staring lovestruck at Enjolras, and they die holding hands. Eponine and Marius? Well, Eponine sings one of the most famous unrequited love songs in the history of musical theater, so I think they belong together. But Valjean and Fantine? Gavroche and Cosette’s unborn baby? (I mean, come on, Gavroche dies as a little kid.) Stuff like that makes me want to scream.

This is TOTALLY different. DEFINITELY canon. I’m not joking in the slightest.

So, ever since I listened to the 2020 London cast recording of Les Mis, I’ve been certain that at 0:15 seconds, Valjean yells at Javert, “I need an Elliott!” Please, listen yourself, see if you hear it as well.

Now, I know that what he says officially is “another hour yet.” But Alfie Boe, to my ears, at least, distinctly speaks about someone named Elliott. So this is not me deliberately mishearing anything, it’s canon. In this particular recording of the show, at least.

First, the logistics. Wikipedia specifically states that the name Elliott has existed in the French language since at least 1195, and Les Misérables takes place in 1815-1832, so it’s not impossible that the characters could run across someone with that name. I am assuming that Elliott is a man, given that it is a traditionally masculine name and the 1800s had some very strict gender norms, but Elliott could viably be a last name rather than a first, and therefore the person who Valjean is in love with isn’t a man. However, I’m going to refer to him as male for reasons I will explain soon. So now, we just need to figure out when Valjean met Elliott and why he decides to shout his name while arguing with his nemesis.

First. Where did they meet? According to the book by Victor Hugo, Valjean spent most of his life before stealing that famous loaf of bread trying to earn bread for his sister and her seven children. This seems like it would occupy enough time that he probably isn’t having time to fall in love or make friends. At all. Then, afterwards, he’s so absorbed in God and being kind and being a good father to Cosette that he’s probably not interested in romance. Leaving only one space of time: his years in the chain gang. This is why I think Elliott is probably a man. All the people in the chain gangs featured in the musical are traditionally men, and, since this theory is based on the musical, for all intents and purposes, Elliot is a man.

A man whom Valjean met in the chain gangs of France after serving nineteen years of excruciating penal labor for stealing a loaf of bread. I don’t think I could get through that without a lot of support, if I did at all. Hugo writes that Valjean survived on hatred, but even if you hated everything on earth, I don’t believe it would give you enough energy to go on. It would merely drain you. Elliot and Valjean, I believe, supported each other when no one else would. They got each other through those nineteen years together, leaning on each other.

Leading to the next point. Why is Valjean wishing for Elliott while he’s arguing with Javert? For that, I’m going to need to refresh us on what, exactly, is going on at that point of the show. Valjean has just been fighting at the barricades during the June rebellion, watching people around him die, probably killing some people himself. He saw his daughter’s true love, Marius, (whom he hated for a while but then sang a ballad about wanting him to live) lying on the barricade, injured and close to death. Then Valjean picks up Marius and carries him, a full grown man, through the sewers of France, only to see two of his worst enemies, Thénardier and Javert. This is, undoubtedly a scarring experience, and seeing Javert at the end of it could only cause him to think back to his time in the chain gangs, where his watched people suffer as he labored away under the Inspector’s nose. In the chain gang, however, he had Elliot by his side.

That is why, when he starts having a yelling match with Javert, Valjean yells, “I need an Elliot.” After experiencing something like that, wouldn’t you need someone you love with you as well?

Once my friend and I had an increasingly dramatic conversation aboout a fictional person called Bob who was dead but nobody but my friend remembered them and I revealed that I had secretly caused Bob's death and played pop goes the weasel at his funeral. This was all done in a voice call with no communication about this beforehand.

I think about that conversation a lot. 

I just got a haircut and I'm so happy right now! I got it cut really short like a pixie cut and my mom said about 8 inches was cut off. It's looks so good and I keep doing a double take in the mirror because it just looks so different!

is it 11:10 at night? yes.
