Religious debates.

Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Religious debates.

Religious debates.

I don't think we should have any more religious debates. I don't want to point fingers at anyone, and I won't say names, but some of the comments and attitudes on these threads are offensive and hurt my feelings. As I've said before, religion is not based off fact. It's based off OPINION, and that's why no one will ever 'win' one of those debates. And that's okay. I like that we're all different and we have different opinions and feelings. But debating about them... that's what I feel is wrong. Because there is no proof. I believe in God, but I can't tell you exactly why. And I'm not going to try, either.

I like learning about other religions. I think if we learned about each other's holidays and rituals and ceremonies, that would be really nice. But debating won't get us anywhere. Even if we try to do it as nicely as we can, feelings could still be hurt.

You're going to say, 'If you don't like religious debates, then don't read them! Don't participate on them!' You have a point. But I think that feelings could be hurt by the religious debates, and not just mine. And we wouldn't want hard feelings between any of us, right?

Again, I'm not pointing fingers at anyone specific. I've gotten awfully heated too sometimes. And since this was a very heavy post I'm going to add a smiley :) just to keep things smiley. Bad joke, yeah. I'm full of them.

I agree with you, Lena. Personally, I enjoy discussing these topics with someone who may not agree, but I understand that it can be hurtful for others. However, I don't think that this should mean we can't mention Jesus or God or anything "religious" at all. I feel like a criminal if I say so much as "I'll be praying for you", "God bless," or "What do you believe in?" No one should have to feel that way. I think it's okay to mention God as long as we don't say things such as "I believe in God and hate atheists, they're so wrong", et cetera. For some of us God is a part of our daily lives, and because we love Him, we talk about Him sometimes with people.

No, I agree, saying 'God bless' and 'I'll be praying for you' and stuff like that is totally fine. And mentioning religion is okay too. I just think maybe we should rethink this idea of debating about stuff for which there is no proof. Yes, we can keep it friendly, but religion, or lack of it, is close to the hearts of many people, and it's kind of hard to do that sometimes.

I'm really sorry, Lena.  I didn't mean to hurt your feelings.  I have to watch how I word certain things.  I get awfully snappy and mean about some things.  Can you forgive me?

Smiley-- :D.

Yes, I forgive EVERYONE. But as I said, I'm not pointing fingers at anyone specifically. It's more these threads as a whole.

Those words you see right next to "submitted by"? That's one of the names Lena was pointing to when she said she wasn't. (Because after all you accuse me of, it's only fair for me to accuse you of accusing me, right?) ;) *is half-joking*

Yes, I agree with Lauren that it's good to talk about religion, and I too enjoy it (to a certain extent), but some things can get a little heated, especially when we debate the moral side of things. I'm not saying there's no proof to religion- because explain the incorruptness of saints' bodies, the miracles, the-- oh, wait, sorry, I'm trolling, forget it- but Lena is right- when religion is something that is important to so many people, and especially over the Internet when you can only read, not hear, feelings of the more sensitive people can be hurt. For the mere sake of keeping any bitterness out of any DtE equations, we should probably stop.

No hard feelings?

Good.

*is really joking this time*

Why are people even religious if no religion is true? Religion would be completely POINTLESS if one of them wasn't true. (I seriously mean no offense, so please don't get mad at me) Why are you Jewish if Judeism isn't a fact? Why am I Catholic if it is (so called) an opinion?? Why is anyone anything if there is no truth in it? If all religion is an opinion WHAT IS THE TRUTH????????? I'd appreciate it if this was posted.

Good question. This is just my belief, keep in mind, and feel free to disagree...er, POLITELY, please. Anyway:

What I think is that there ARE 'true' religions. Only, there isn't a 'true' religion for humanity, just a 'true' religion for each individual. I am Jewish because Judaism is MY 'true' religion. I get that it's not yours. I get that it's not everyone's. But it feels right to me. It works for me. So, the point of religion it is that it is true - for me, at least.

What I'm saying about fact and opinion: you may say there is proof to back up that God exists, etc. But people interpret situations differently. If you were sick, and prayed to God to make you well, and you got well, you could say that God made you well. But someone could just as easily say that it was good medicine. See what I'm saying?

So that's my opinion. You probably disagree. Go ahead. But I think it's time we stopped.

Maybe on earth, but in reality one religion must have more truth then the others, or rather, one religion must have less. The truths aren't revealed right now, but they will be. Here's an example:

There are two people. uhh..... Bob and Fred. Fred is color blind. Bob says the sky is blue. Fred says, no it's red! (Ok I know this isn't true for color blind people but still) But scientifically, based on all that science about light, the sky is actually blue. Like bob said. Sorry I've got to go, I'll touch up on this later.

I'm back.

So even though Fred thought the sky was red, and it really was in his perspective.... it wasn't. So even though personally they thought it was different colors, everyone knows the sky isn't two different colors. Truth doesn't vary from person to person, it's peoples opinion on what is true that varies.

But religion is very different from science.

OK, I give up. :) I don't even know what I'm arguing against. Hee hee. OK, yeah it's different from science 'cause it can't be proven now. Our personal views are different and what's truth to us might not be truth to other people, but with that being said, then it's not really truth. It's people's opinion of what's true.

Um, ok, but that still doesn't answer my question, Lena. What is the point of religion if religion is only right for an individual and no one religion is true?

The point is that the individual feels, um, good. (okay, that's an understatement, but you get my point.)
