Common Core?

Common Core?

I hate Common Core. I will take.It.Down.  They bring down the baseline levels so t'd the easiest thing ever invented. GTG NOW. I hate common core

I KNOW RIGHT!

WE SPENT A WHOLE HOUR LONG CLASS ON FINDING INVERSE OPERATIONS!!

"What's the inverse of add 4?"

"Subtract 4. Duh."

"Great job! Beacause you're all doing so well we're only going to spend one hour long class on this! Or is that not enough practice for you?"

*sigh*

And then that night we'll have homework, and she'll make us use a scratch piece of paper. What scratch work would you even do for that?? And if we don't explain it right she'll be like "I know you can get the right answer but I need you to understand how to get there." The standardized tests don't make us explain the questions (ok maybe one out of a total of 75 but I dont think we need that much pracrice for that one question)!!! Plus, if the answer doesn't matter anymore, won't we just waste our time explaining the wrong answer??

And this is a direct quote straight from my math teacher.

"We're doing mental math today. Everybody take out a scratch piece of paper."

AND IT'S MENTAL MATH!!!

GAH!

DOWN WITH COMMON CORE!

I stopped bothering doing work out, and I started gettign zeroes on all my assignments. But every bloody answer is right! Ah!

I disagree with you, Indigo. When you get to higher math your problems will become harder and longer. Okay, that is obvious. But what if you check your answer and it is wrong? Let's say you did all the math in your head because it was really easy. You cannot trace your process to find the issue with your math unless it is all written out and shown properly. Even though the showing your work seems really ridiculous, it is helpful. Those "unnecessary steps" are actually really helpful.

Maybe, but you didn't see the steps... she was making us do 3 terms using the rule before we could call it a rule. It doesn't make sense to me!

I, like Ruby, am out of reach of Common Core. In fact, I live in one of six some states that haven't accepted it. I don't really understand how Common Core is different from any other curriculum--it seems like my cousins in Iowa are doing the same things as me at the same times. (Of course, I don't know if their schools use Common Core. I know we're both IB schools, but IB is a different thing on a different level. (I think?)) I watched their video and all I really got was that they were trying to standardize things everywhere in America. Is creating a consistent nation-wide bar really LOWERING the bar? It's true, I live in a state without it. I did dislike the way their video openly dissed multiple choice questions. (Whispers madly) MUTIPLE CHOICE IS THE ONLY CHOICE. (Haha, this is really not how I feel, Miss Explains Everything.) Other than that, I can't really understand what to hate about them since I don't really understand how horrible they could be.

Common Core is AWFUL!

In my class we spend most of the time on review. I get things like this *snaps fingers* in three seconds once it is explained to me, most of the time. We spent four months on fractions and decimals. FOUR MONTHS! And I'm in fifth grade, and it was about equivalent fractions, and adding and multiplying and dividing and subtracting fractions with decimals. And the crazy thing: We also did comparing fractions, and my math partner found a much better, shorter, easier, simpler shortcut to do it, and my partner and I were both very good at math, and WE HAD TO DO EVERYTHING THE LONG WAY! WHICH IS HARDER, TAKES 3 TIMES AS LONG, AND IS JUST PLAIN ANNOYING! It's not fair! I want less review, more Math! Most of the time in Math class i get to do challenge work, but still!

At least you get to do work! My math teacher is the world's greatest idiot. We spent a ttal of an hour on half a problem, an it's stuff like n+2 n=4 4+2=6 Aghh! I'm going crazy!

We're spending too much time learning things that are unnecessary. Our math teacher spend two weeks explaining the formula for the area of a circle. TWO WEEKS! How is that even possible? Pi r squared. Period. No more explaining needed! To quote a math teacher from last year, "I've never had to use these or even heard of them [box and whisker plots], until two weeks ago I was told I had to teach them." What is the point? Oh, and don't even get me started on smarter balanced testing...

What I'm hearing about Common Core matches up with what I had to do in math for much of elementary and middle school before Common Core was implemented. Here I am with almost everyone else in those classes in AB calculus as a sophomore. Let's face it, it's not as inane as it seems.

Yes, you may be understanding the material faster than other people. Not everyone gets it right away. Yes, you may be able to remember the formula now, but will you be able to manipulate it with critical thinking skills on a test without much practice?

I thought all the things you were complaining about were stupid when I was your age, but it made me into a really excellent math student today.

Yes, you have to write out all the inane steps. In a couple of years, it will become much more complex and completely inane. Also, follow all the directions. If it says to "show your work" and you don't show anything, then you cannot expect to get anything but a 0. Learn that now, because future math teachers will not be forgiving.

I don't really mind math Common Core. Sure, some of these explanations are kind of stupid and tedious. But I am now doing what used to be 8th grade math in 6th. I like that they are finally challenging me. I am doing worse in math. I got my first B this year (on the report card for the whole class). What's pretty bad is the reading. They tend to make you read and write essays on sometimes false information. Or it's like: "This thing is really bad. Don't do it." This happens even when it may be good. Our government doesn't make the best choices sometimes. I'm glad my dad tells me the truth. Watch out in your reading articles for school! I'm warning you.

Reading... well, academically it isn't as HORRIBLE as math, but it stinks anyway. They make us a) read the SAME STORY five times, b) read one of those times following along with your teacher, which is simply AGONIZING because I already read faster than her and out loud to my mental reading speed isn't even worth comparing, and c) then do these boring, boring, boring questions that you have to do a lot of writing on.

Really? We're doing first grade math in sixth grade. We spent the entire first half of the year on addition, division, subtraction, and multiplication. Yaaayy!!!!

I want to do calculus and trig and linear equations other fun stuff...

Spammie says more. No, Spam, less.

Yes! Take down Common Core! It treats us like we're imbeciles! I agree, math is definitely one of the biggest issues. I think the main reason as to why we're forced to "show our work" is so that we can prove that we didn't just copy an answer, or use a calculator or whatever. It's still ridiculous. I just...gahh. I'll continue ranting later.
