Villain

Note: You have until Monday, July 7, to create a villain in time for voting. Go here to see the schedule.

One of the most effective ways to be sure a story will have conflict that keeps readers breathlessly turning pages is to introduce a villain—someone whose goals collide head-on with the main character’s goals. We fantasy readers can all think of unforgettable villains from our favorite stories, those scary or relentless opponents that make life so difficult for the hero or heroine.

Villains need more than special magical powers to become so memorable that they haunt our imaginations; they also need as much personality and feeling as the hero. In actual life, almost no one ever sets out to become a villain. Perhaps your villain is desperate to protect her homeland, or family, or dragon. Perhaps the villain’s very life is at stake. There must always be a why, a solid reason behind the evil the villain does so that it makes sense—at least to him or her.

Usually the plot will unfold if you can figure out the relationship of the villain to the main character and what the villain wants. For instance, in thinking about Quill, my heroine who comes out only in moonlight, I might wonder who cast the original spell on her grandmother and why. I’ll imagine it was a monstrous spirit-witch, Gershardt, who lives in a cavern beneath a pool in the forest. Gershardt’s spells can steal someone’s daytime essence, enabling her to take on a human form, leave the pool, and walk about in the world of mortals. But her spell fades over time so she is trying to steal Quill’s nighttime essence, too—although that would make Quill vanish forever.

In my example the stakes are high: the villain wants to continue living in the physical world, and so does the main character—whichever of them loses will disappear!

I might write for my Crowd Sorcery Sentences: “Gnarled hands rose from the water and gripped a tree root, followed by bony arms and a streaming tangle of white hair. Old Gershardt crept from the pool and stood dripping and frosty in the moonlight, blinking into the shadows with her pale blue eyes, chuckling through her toothless mouth.”

When I write, I try to keep in mind that, from the villain’s point of view, he or she is the true main character of the story, and it is the hero or heroine that is in the way.

Hooray! Evil people! I'm probably no good at them, but still!

Name: Nova Ashcraft

Physical Appearance: Long auburn brown hair, gold-brown eyes, and blue-ish tinted skin (like all elves have), and a bit taller than the regular elf.

Background: Nova is part elf, but her mother was Medusa. She has a single snake sprouting out of her hair that is hidden, and she can turn people to stone. She was taken in by a single female elf, but once they discovered her heritage, she was excluded from the elf city she resided in, and she ran away to be taken in by a hag, who taught her the secrets of witchcraft and alchemy, which she used for evil. Once she was discarded from the elven city, she was largely forgotten.

Lair: She lives underground under a forest, in a series of tunnels that connects her to the human, elven, and fae realms. There are also some rooms in the tunnels where she sleeps, eats, and makes evil schemes. She currently is passing nasty, fake messages to the fae and then back to the elves. She, in other words, is behind the war between the elf?/fae war, although nobody knows it.

Villain's Goal: She wants the elves and the fae to destroy each other, and if the humans join a side, that's even better for her. Once they are demolished, she will take over. If needed, she will help a bit more.

Attitude toward hero: Doesn't know who she is yet, but when she does, she will feel a bit bad for her, and will want her to join her.

How is the villain stronger than the hero?: She is very persuasive, and "doesn't need love". She is rather ruthless with people she doesn't know.

How is the villain weaker than the hero?: She keeps her friends close to her, and when something happens to them, she's very passionate about  it, although she tries to hide it.

Why are the main character and the villain in conflict with each other?: Asha wants to make peace, and Nova wants them to die.

Your Crowd Sorcery Sentences:

Left, right, forward, right, back. There. Down the ever-circling steps and into the hole. Down, down, down. I held my breath and stared down at the poison that was about to hit me and would distintigrate me on impact if I hit it. Timing was crucial for this. The poison turned to stone just before I hit it with bent knees. Still holding my breath, I hurried across the now slab of stine. Once safely into the stone corridor, I let out my breath. Instantly poison again. I ran to the very end of the hall into the room with the cauldron. My evil-making room.

The Walking stone is not a creature, but a small disk the size of a plate that is made of stone. Using the walking stone, you can effectively create rifts in the world which act like portals, create "pocket worlds" to reside inside, travel to other worlds, and even to travel back in time. However, the Walking Stone has powerful intentions of its own. The power is granted through a demon named Aon trapped inside and he slowly dominates his controller like a sinister puppet. "Hosts" of the Walking stone will use its powers to destroy the walking stone, effectively freeing the demon. The Walking stone would reside in anywhere, where Aon waits patiently for the next host.

Name: Jason Liam

Physical Appearance: Tall, thin, short brown hair, perfectly ordinary. If you passed him in the streets you wouldn't even register him, much less remember.

Background: He was a perfectly normal, happy man. His job as a paper salesman wasn't very interesting, but it paid the bills. He liked to grab a drink with his friends after work, hug his two kids, Melinda and Jakey, and kiss his wife, Lena, under the stars. The four, Jason, Lena, and the twins, were happy for a while; unfortunately, Lena was killed in a vehicular accident when the kids were only two years old. Jason was depressed for a while, but he had Melinda and Jakey, and they kept him sane. He threw himself into being the best father he could be, and for a while he was. They were surviving. Thriving, in fact. Still, even the best dad can't protect his children from everything, and when an epidemic flooded the small town, they got sick and passed away. He wishes everyday he could have saved them. He couldn't make it this time. No one was there to keep him grounded. He swore to himself he wouldn't let this happen to any more innocent children. He kidnaps children, ages 0-18, and keeps them in his lair. He just wants to keep them safe, at any cost.

Lair: There is old farm a while away from town. He keeps the children there, in a refurbished barn-house. The whole place is falling apart. He lives alone in the loft of the barn.

Goal: To "protect" as many kids as he can.

Attitude towards hero: (The hero is probably Camille Adelaide. Pg. 3 of hero page) He sees her as a poor, helpless girl who's fallen pray to society and a bad upbringing. He would love to save her. But after she causes him serious trouble, he starts to see her as someone who has to go for the greater good.

Strengths: He's normal enough to pass as a member of society. He passes completely under the rader of law enforcement as they search for the "Masked Kidnapper". He's honestly a good person, just, you know, OUT OF HIS FREAKIN' MIND. Still, he's kind, funny, etc. He's good with kids, they don't see his true intentions until it's too late. He can cut deep, be manipulative, and figure out a person's insecurities.

Weaknesses: He'd rather not kill the hero. He holds out hope that he can save her. He is absolutly crazy and can't see it. He tries to fill the hole his family left with all these other kids and "good" deeds. He is self-destructive, depressed, and did I mention crazy?

Conflict: She wants to be a hero. Catching the man who's kidnapping all those children seems good enough. As she continues, it stops being about her and starts being about all the horrible things he's done, and to some extent, her pity for him. He doesn't even see her at first, but when he does he wants to "save" her. When she lays down some truth on him, he feels betrayed that someone he's only trying to protect could see him as a monster. He decides to get rid of her, however she may be the cataclyst to him realizing that kidnapping kids is a bad career move, and will never fix his broken heart.

Forgot my sentences!

"Hey there, sweetheart," said a man, leaning over Clara. His teeth were perfect, his eyes sincere, he seemed like just the person Clara was looking for.

"Hullo, sir," she said. "M-my parents are gone and I'm scared. Can...can you help me?"

"Well, certainly, honey. What do they look like?"

Clara gave a brief description--her father was tall and had red hair, and her mother was a blonde and "the prettiest lady you'll ever see."

The man took her hand and stood up, his fingers warm and tight around the little girl's wrist.

"W-where are we going? To find my parents?" she asked.

"Oh, no," he replied. "They are much too stupid to be your parents, letting you get lost and all. Why it's a wonder you weren't killed! Come on, you'll be safe with me." He quickly began tugging her along, leading her farther and farther away from the city park, leaving behind the sound of happy laughter for that of cold wind blowing through rotten walls. And the next day a new poster would be hung in the square: one more missing . . . Clara Fitzella . . . reward . . . any information please . . . Masked Kidnapper? . . .
