Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (A Fanfiction)
Read this. Now....

Read this. Now. It is brilliant, the most wonderful, hilarious fanfic I've ever read--not that I read many, but still! You can easily find it via Google; has anyone else read it? You need to if you haven't. It's basically what HP would have been like if Harry had been raised by loving, supportive scientists. I'm not sure if it's done being written yet, as I'm still reading it myself, but there's quite a lot there, and it was updated very recently. It's amazing. This version of Harry is quite possibly my favorite character ever, and he just happens to not only be amazingly awesome himself but to be so in such a way that he brings out all the most awesome qualities in McGonagall, Hermione, Neville, and many other characters who were awesome to begin with. Quirrel is awesome here, too. You must read this if you've read all 7 HP books, but if you haven't read them all, I strongly advise to wait until you finish them to read it, as it contains major spoilers for all seven books.

Chatterboxers, it's great that you can recommend favorite fanfictions, books, movies, songs, etc. to each other. Cricket is happy to be able to provide a place for you to do that. However, everyone should please remember that any of the suggested material should be appropriate for all our readers, even those as young as age 9. We trust you all to stick to that guideline, because we Admins don't have time to check everything out in detail before posting your comments. If we are in doubt, we will not post a comment. And if you happen to discover something inappropriate that has slipped through and been posted, please call it to our attention.

So enjoy the fanfic, but please keep the Chatterbox a site of high-quality literature for all!

Um. Stuff got deleted. Two of the fics are on different sites. :/

Also: Other than DAYD and A Hero, all listed fics are appropriate for anyone who reads the actual HP books; DAYD has a fair bit of violence (since the school is under the command of Death Eaters and all) and A Hero has some (largely offscreen) violence as well a fair bit of language. So use discretion with those two. Thank you for reminding me of that ZNZ.

Re: Finding fics:

MoR and DAYD shouldn't be problematic, a normal search on fanfiction will suffice.

Very Secret Diary: Google with quotes.

SY,SA: a normal search will also suffice

A Hero: search the title, then use the narrow results side bar to navigate to Harry Potter > Dudley Dursley (and it is, obviously, the one in English).

Chanson de Geste: heh. typo in the other post, which was why you couldn't find it ZNZ, sorry. Search the title and navigate to Chronicles of Narnia.

And for The Most Grievous and Lamentable... etc. google with quotes. *fails at posting*

Good grief, TNÖ, you have some dark tastes. I am now, quite frankly, scared. O_O

I definitely appreciate the Admin's warning as to suggested reading material being appropriate for younger readers. But I have a question: Are we really not allowed to reccomend anything, say, 10+, even if we give a proper warning?

Keeping stuff like that out of suggested reading material would mean, among other things, deleting threads about Twilight, Eragon, Inkheart (I LOVE the book but there is mild language) and also many classics. And I noticed that in this month's magazine a reader reccomended the book Just Ella. I read that. They were right to accompany it with a proper warning, 11 and up, like it said, but it was featured in the magazine despite some questionable content. Isn't it alright just to accompany our reccomendations with age ranges or ratings?

Emily, you and others can continue to recommend a range of books. Most books that Cricket
readers recommend are fine. However, clearly books and sites that were
for older teens and adults were being recommended on this thread, and
that is just not appropriate.

Okay, I understand. I was a little confused. Thanks, though!

I would say that in all fanfiction reccomendations we should put the rating of the fanfiction (most of them list a rating), as well as any warnings, and definitely keep T (PG-13) as a maximum rating.

Oh, and Emily - I've read Just Ella. Twice. I apparently completely failed to pick up on any questionable content. What was questionable?

I've read it, and I didn't notice it, either...

I agree with ZNZ. To start with, MoR is rated T, and tVSD (which I just started reading) is rated K (lwhich is like G or E, appropriate for anyone). I don't know about the others, because I haven't read them yet.

Anyway, tVSD is very good. The writing can be a little bit awkward at times, but I love the characterization. The HP books don't really show you what Ginny was like when not with HP, and the author had a lot of free rein to do what she liked with her, so I wasn't sure quite what to expect, but she's quite interesting and engaging here, much more so than she ever was in the books. I like her.

Hm. I don't like Ron in VSD much. Also, it seems to have been written before we knew that Moaning Myrtle was in Ravenclaw, because it says she was in Slytherin.

I finished VSD. It was good. Not brilliant, but worth reading. I also read Six Years, Six Applicants, which was hilarious. I'm now reading Run That By Me Again?, which is also great.

Oh, and since we're listing ratings, SYSA is K+ (That means appropriate for ages 9 and up, so it should be fine for everyone on this site.). RTBMY is rated T.

When I said TBMY,' I meant 'RTBMA'. Also, I don't recommend reading it before OGNA (even though I did),  because there are minor spoilers in the notes. OGNA is excellent, by the way, and rated K.

Aetc says CBtu! Yes, I agree: There are great fanfics on the CB, too!
