Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (A Fanfiction)
Read this. Now....

Read this. Now. It is brilliant, the most wonderful, hilarious fanfic I've ever read--not that I read many, but still! You can easily find it via Google; has anyone else read it? You need to if you haven't. It's basically what HP would have been like if Harry had been raised by loving, supportive scientists. I'm not sure if it's done being written yet, as I'm still reading it myself, but there's quite a lot there, and it was updated very recently. It's amazing. This version of Harry is quite possibly my favorite character ever, and he just happens to not only be amazingly awesome himself but to be so in such a way that he brings out all the most awesome qualities in McGonagall, Hermione, Neville, and many other characters who were awesome to begin with. Quirrel is awesome here, too. You must read this if you've read all 7 HP books, but if you haven't read them all, I strongly advise to wait until you finish them to read it, as it contains major spoilers for all seven books.

Chatterboxers, it's great that you can recommend favorite fanfictions, books, movies, songs, etc. to each other. Cricket is happy to be able to provide a place for you to do that. However, everyone should please remember that any of the suggested material should be appropriate for all our readers, even those as young as age 9. We trust you all to stick to that guideline, because we Admins don't have time to check everything out in detail before posting your comments. If we are in doubt, we will not post a comment. And if you happen to discover something inappropriate that has slipped through and been posted, please call it to our attention.

So enjoy the fanfic, but please keep the Chatterbox a site of high-quality literature for all!

I LOVE METHODS OF RATIONALITY!!!!!!! BEST HP FANFIC EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And no, it isn't over, not by a long shot. It's on 65 and we're still only in, what, February of Harry's first year?

Quirrellmort is so awesome in this version. And all the discussions of time travel make the geek inside of me squee happily.

Oh. my. gosh.  This is incredible.  After reading your thread, I looked up the fanfiction.  I just finished Chapter 5, and just wanted to thank you for making this thread.  Because I had to take a short break towards the end of Chapter 5 and laugh my head off.  Oh, this is amazing, amazing fanfic!  Harry is hilariously amazingly, wonderful and such a great alternative to the slightly less laugh-inducing, more boring Harry of the canon.  Don't get me wrong, JK Rowling is amazing.  But this new Harry is great.  It's just... let's just say I wish I had enough time to read way more tonight.

Yes. I wholeheartedly second this recommendation. Rationalist!Harry is far more interesting to read about than Canon!Harry, and I love that Hermione got sorted into Ravenclaw. I read lots of fanfiction, and this is one of the best fics out there.

Can we use this thread to talk about other stellar fanfiction? I have some recommendations...

Sure! I haven't read much fanfiction at all but would read some recommendations, so they'd be appreciated!

All right, here's one of my favourites: The Official Fanfiction University of Middle-earth. The premise is simple: Writers of bad LotR fanfic are brought to Middle-earth to be taught how to write fanfic by LotR characters (by which I mean, all LotR characters, from the Silmarillion, too. This includes evil people, and also dead ones). The main character is a Legolas fangirl named Lina. Fangirls! Dark Lords! Evil toe-rings that induce bad spelling! Urple! And my personal favourite - Mini Balrogs, which are created every time anyone misspells the name of a LotR character. This is hilarious, but it also offers some sound advice for fanfic writing, and I think it should be required reading for everyone who wants to write LotR fanfic. It is complete, but know that it has 64 chapters. There is also a sequel, Once More Into the Urple Depths of OFUM, which isn't complete and also isn't as good.

Captcha: wgar. This is an anagram of warg. This is a sign.

What exactly is fanfiction?

Fanfiction is stories using characters or settings from a published work, so called because it is typically written by fans of the work in question. That LotR RP you're in? That's fanfiction.

And I've been re-reading OFUM, and it is so good. The whole learning through pain thing is epic, and there's a well-written romance not involving Legolas or Aragorn! Do you know how rare that is in this fandom? And the characterisation is convincing and well-done, and just... yeah.

TNÖ's fanfic recs, all of which can be found on fanfiction and complete unless otherwise stated:

Harry Potter:

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (not complete, but updated regularly and now up to 67 long chapters). See original post and my other response to it.

Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness. It follows Neville and Co. during the events of book seven, it's fantastic, and I've ranted about it before so I'll refrain now..

The Very Secret Diary. Basically, it is a transcript of Tom Riddle's diary's conversations and subsequent possession of Ginny. Slightly disturbing, excellently written, but written pre the reveal of Ginny's full name (Ginevra) so she's called Virginia throughout.

Six Years, Six Applicants. It chronicles Snape's yearly ritual of applying for, and not getting, the Defense Against the Dark Arts job. It's fairly brief, but hilarious and well written.

A Hero. In which Dudley meets Character Development and saves Harry's life. Far better than it sounds.

The Most Grievous and Lamentable Tragedy of the Death of Lord Voldemort (play format). Definitely parody, with stage directions like [in a manner suggestive of profound, puppy-kicking evil].

And a rather random Chronicles of Narnia one (and, incidentally, the only CoN ff I've found worth reading):

Chason de Geste. Seven years into the Pevensie's reign in Narnia, Jadis' ghost starts tormenting Edmund again. Deep political discussions and games of what can best be described "chess on steroids" ensue. Incomplete, now on chapter 20, not shippy unless you really squint ((ahaha... guilty)), updated fairly regularly, reasonably canon characterization. Extremely well written, though this Narnia is significantly darker than canon (in that the nasty side of medieval life [high infant mortality, low life expectancy, witch hunts, starvation, rampant disease, etc.] are explored. Occasionally hilarious.

I second Six Years, Six Applicants. That author has written quite a few excellent HP fics - in particular I like Oh God, Not Again, in which adult!Harry is sent back in time and is forced to live through his schooling again - very funny. Harry acts slightly crazy throughout and becomes good friends with Luna when he's in his second year. It's complete with 50 chapters. Run That By Me Again? is also good, and very like MoR in that Harry is given the powers of Logic™. It's not a complete story, just a series of loosely connected one-shots, but it's funny and does a good job of pointing out some of the more glaring plot holes in the series.

Also, I've looked up DAYD, but I haven't read it, as it's rated M for Mature, and I make a point of staying away from anything higher than T (Teen). I just thought that should be mentioned, since the majority of the population here is, well, young.

I've read DAYD and I really liked it. I'm excited about MoR and will read it soon. I've learned that heeding TNO's advice about what is excellent is quite beneficial.

I'm sure it is good. And I'm certainly not denying TNÖ's excellent taste - she's introduced me to some great works of fiction. I just don't read M-rated fics. It's a matter of principle, I suppose, and also a matter of being thirteen years old, and a matter of Mom having told me not to read anything rated that high. (Though I was careful about ratings even before she told me that.) XD I also thought that the rating should be pointed out, since there's 10 and 11 year olds reading this. /repetitively redundant rambling

Also, TNÖ, I looked up the fics you recommended on fanfiction, because you said they were all there, and nothing came up for any of them but DAYD and SYSA.
