Comfort Books
What are your...
What are your comfort books? Books that you've read so many times that always make you feel better, or that are your go-to when you're upset or have nothing to read. I'm curious what other people's are!
My comfort books are any of the Ranger's Apprentice books, they always cheer me up. Little Women is another, definitely, it's my favorite. Bookishly Ever After- it's a little cheesy (it's a YA romcom), but I've read it a dozen times and I love it. My comfort book when I was younger was Spilling Ink, which is a book about writing. I read it so often that it got to the point where I could quote it basically word for word. Trumpet of the Swan was another one when I was younger (I still love these books)!

The Penderwicks is my number one comfort book. I love the series SO much and I have read them more times than I can count! Besides the Penderwicks most of my comfort books are graphic novels. There's the BSC graphic novels, the Lumberjanes, Chi's sweet home, and sisters (I have read these books a million times as well)

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell - when I was shorter I was crazy about horses, and this is like the quintessential horse book, so it's familiar. Also it's just a good book. I love the last line, which I quote here, more or less, off the top of my head: "And often before I am quite awake, I fancy I am back with my old friends at Birtwick, standing under the apple trees." So serene and just slightly bittersweet, which basically describes the whole book.
The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett - I've read this many times. It's very funny. Enough said.
Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli - aah I love this book, Stargirl is such a great character. She's just so true and kind and gloriously weird... Plus I love the way Spinelli writes, rather faraway and thoughtful with a touch of whimsy.
The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater - this book features unusual amounts of death-by-monster-horse for a comfort book, but I must include it. First of all, the setting - undetermined time in the early twentieth century, on a tiny Scotland/Ireland-inspired island - is oddly comforting and nostalgic, somehow. I'd like to live there. Second - the characters are so realistic and relatable, as per usual of Stiefvater. And the relationships between them - especially Puck and Sean - just *chef's kiss* perfection.

My go-to comfort books are basically the whole Wings of Fire series, especially The Poison Jungle and Darkstalker. I've read them many times over, and it shows. A couple other comfort books I have include Birding is my Favorite Video Game and any of the first three books of the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series. And when I was little, my comfort books were The Velveteen Rabbit (one of the best books ever) and Hillside Lullaby. :)

Yay! So many Ranger's Apprentice fans... only one of my friends has ever read them.
— Ranger's Apprentice + Brotherband Chronicles
— Harry Potter, especially the 5th one, I love Dolores Umbridge
— Guardians of Ga'Hoole
— Pretty much any other book (:

People have said most of mine at least once already, but I love the Penderwicks, Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, and the Mysterious Benedict Society. Reading the first line of any of those books is the equivalent of sinking into bed with a mug of hot cocoa after a long day. I love that so many other people agree with me about those books, because they have my whole heart.
Oh, and also The Princess Bride!

Definitely The Penderwicks, it's so funny it can make me laugh no matter how I'm feeling. Fantasy books have the wonderful capabilty to make me forget about anything bad that's happening in my own life, so those too.
