Any recomendations for...

Any recomendations for my summer reading list? Let me give you some background on my reading interests. I love classics, enjoy a good realistic fiction, and am forever looking for enjoyable, well writen historical fiction. I have nothing against fantasy, though I usualy don't read much of it. I would, if I knew some good ones. I despise dystopian novels, and don't like modern romance novels. So basicaly, I don't like anything YA ;). I get scared SUPER easily, so scary books are not really for me. So, any tips? Please? I really need some good new books to read!

Definitely read them! Here's nothing childish about "children's classics" and in fact, most of the people O know don't read them until they're in middle school! Classics don't really ever get old....why, I recently reread A Little Princess.

Thanks, Admin and Owlgirl. *blushes* I, of all people, should know that.

Oh dang yes. Black Beauty is not childish. AT. ALL. A little princess may be what you call "childish", but it has a special place in my heart.

Black Beauty is one of my favorite books ever! Though--here's an embarrassing story--I used to freak out and have nightmares about fires because of the part where the stable burns down. (I was 5, don't judge.) You should definitely read it, though, especially if you are a horse lover.

Booksy, I recommend 'The Mysterious Benedict Society' by Trenton Lee Stewart. It is fast-paced, engaging, quirky, funny, and deep in places. It is also one of those few 'pleasure-books', that is, books that are easy to read, that doesn't shut your brain down whilst reading it-- it keeps your mind running. Great for summer reading, and there are three books in all.

I read The Giver when I was eleven or twelve, and some aspects of it disturbed me-- but then, that's just me. It's not really a frightening book, it's just a little bit sick and, well--disturbing in places. A very good classic and must-read, but not for anyone who is easily disturbed. Sorry, I can't think of any synoynms for 'disturbed' just now. ;) Happy reading!

I understand if you don't think The Giver is right for you now. That's okay, and quite frankly, Esthelle is right, it does have some weird aspects.

Actually, I think I take back my recommendation on that book for you, Booksy, at least for now. But at least some time in your life, maybe in high school or college you should read it.

Thanks, Owlgirl, I think you're right. I don't think I'm exactly ready for the book, not because I'm not mature enough, but because it's a sort of book that I need to grow up a bit to enjoy. I will read it, sometime, truly. But maybe in a couple of years.

Hey, Esthelle, there's actually a prologue to the Mysterious Benesdict Society called The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict that's all about Mr. Benedict when he was a kid -- It's REALLY good!

I don't know if you already knew about that, but you just said there was three books and I wanted to make sure you knew about the fourth.

Kid Mr. Benedict is so awesome. He's like a combination of Sticky, Reynie, and a little bit of Kate. I don't know if I see any Constance in there, though... ;)

I have an AWESOME book on the Danish Resistance during WW2; it is fiction, and really hard to find! It is called "Bright Candles." You have got to read it!

Have you read A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket? I've only read the first two books, but I love it so far and you should definitely read them.

This is. . . Another one of those books I've tried and. . . I don't think it's quite right for me. I just feel like there's too much depressing-ness.

Oh same Booksy, I recently read the first book, and was not crazy about it, especially the writing. I didn't check out the second book.

Oh, those are really good books! There series gets better in some ways and weirder in some ways, too. You should try all of the books, though. THey're pretty good!
