Actually, JK Rowling hated Pansy so much she didn't want her to be happy and marry Draco. Apperently Pansy represents all the mean girls and bullies JK ever had to deal with. She's the 'anti-Hermione'. And if you read The Cursed Child, you find out that Astoria is really a quite wonderful person (even if she's not in the book much).
