Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Blood of Olympus
I know it...

I know it is still really early, but since the cover has been posted on Rick's blog, I thought I'd make a post about this last book in the Heroes of Olympus series.

As Blonde Heroines Rule said on another thread, I think, the American cover of the novel does seem a little anticlimactic. Not that any of the covers are especially good, but at least Mark of Athena showed the kind of seperation and unity between Camp Half Blood and New Rome, which is ostensibly supposed to be what the series is about. Personally, I prefer the English cover for Blood of Olympus, especially Gaia's wierd, Malefiecent kind of presence. And at least all the seven chosen are pictured, even if Riordan does think they look like 20 year old Abercrombie models.

What do you think's going to happen in the last book of the foreseeable Percy saga? Who do you think will die? Do you think RR will ever continue the story? Will you be relieved, as I might be, that the aimless rambles will be terminated in the place of his Norse series? And what do you think might happen, after the series is over, to Annabeth and Percy and everyone else left alive? Oh gods--I just considered the fact that Rick might be incredibly cruel and kill off Annabeth or Percy. Do you think he could be so terrible to his readers? I surely hope not.

What are your thoughts on it?

Can't believe it, but I actually forgot about Reyna. She always seemed a little tragic to me; it would be really interesting if she dies.

That would be so awsome if Leo becomes a god and ends up with Calypso. I mean, finally, the poor goddess can live happily ever after with someone.

I think Annabeth will survive -- at least she better or Rick Riordan will have to face a mob of angry fans led by me!

I wonder if there will be a scene with Bianca. Didn't The Son of Neptune say that Bianca had come back to life? I don't know, I haven't read it in a while. It would be cool if Nico got to meet Bianca.                                       Calypso will probably be rescued by Leo- I don't think Rick Riordan would have put anything about that in the book, if nothing was going to happen with it. Although it seems like a boring fairytale ending- prince rescues princess.                                                                                                                                                                I hope something bad happens to Octavian, or at least he gets kicked out of Camp Jupiter. I wonder if Percy will move to Camp Jupiter- he's always talking about it. That would be kind of weird, I still remember in The Sea of Monsters, how Percy thought Camp Half Blood was the best best place he had ever been.                            The US cover of The Blood of Olypus is weird. I zoomed in on it and it looked like Jason was wearing glasses. Weird.

Yes, but if she comes back to life (as she did) then Bianca will have no memories of her past life. I doubt she would know about the gods, though there is a small chance she will be a kid of a god again - in one sense, she still is the daughter of Hades. I wonder about her. It's so unlike Bianca to just leave Nico!

Speaking as a guy, Jason annoys me.

Piper annoys me too, though not as much.

What flaws does Jason have? Besides being tragically heroic and endearingly awkward, which aren't even flaws the way they're presented. And furthermore, he's blonde, he's blue-eyed, and he can fly. I mean, seriously? The whole Reyna-Piper-Jason love triangle thing was interesting for about five seconds and then RR killed it off right away. I think Percy's description of Jason as a 'blonde Superman' is very accurate.

And as if Jason wasn't bad enough by himself, RR added Piper, probably so he could have someone perceived as 'perfect' enough to partner with Jason.

Seriously, people don't EXIST like that in real life. I mean, besides the whole demigod thing. Duh.

I'm going to go ahead and defend Percy and Annabeth too, although that may just be out of loyalty to the original series.

Percy has flaws. I'm not going to pretend he doesn't have the aforementioned tragic heroicness and endearing awkwardness that Jason has. But besides that, he's forgetful, nervous, jealous, and makes too many jokes. And thankfully when RR wrote The Lightning Thief, he decided on a son of Poseidon, instead of a son of Zeus. Percy has the power to control water, which is so much less romanticized than flying.

I'm going to mention Annabeth's fatal flaw now, only because it's a fair point and something that actually affects her character. I would be interested to know what Jason and Piper's fatal flaws would be, not to mention the rest of the seven, though I'm guessing that Jason's, at least, would be something totally stupid like Percy's.

Besides that, she is NOT a daughter of Aphrodite which means that she wakes up in the morning looking human like the rest of us.

In case you guys didn't realize, a lot of this frustration is coming from the fact that HoO in general annoys me and that the new characters are all underdeveloped because the plot is moving so fast and that every book is essentially the same story, except for the last one which had the whole Doors of Death thing.

I apologize if this was disrespectful to any one of you who like to read about Jason and/or Piper.

Corina put across a valid point that from a third-person point of view, Percy may seem kind of perfect, but since he had already gained legions of admirers as a first-person narrator, there doesn't seem at all that kind of perfection that Jason has. I really miss Percy's sarcastically witty narration.

Somehow Piper didn't seem so perfect to me, maybe because I'm a girl and I would personally kill to be able to cut my hair with a pair of craft scissors and still look beautiful, or have kaleidoscopic eyes. Plus, I like how she's a different kind of Aphrodite daughter, especially since they have all been portrayed so shallow in the first series (and like Drew in The Lost Hero).

I don't know about Percy or Annabeth BUT I might know about Leo.  Leo will probobly desert the rest of the group and go find calypso. (You havn't forgotten about that yet, have you?) Leo will most likley brave lots of stuff and when he finds ogiya again, he will be suffering from a mortal wound and die.CryCry

@Everinne

Actually that's definitely true now that I think about it. You're always hardest on yourself, etc., so from a third person viewpoint any one of the characters will seem more perfect.

Exactly! *grins* So really, if we'd have seen the whole series from third person, Percy might be getting just as much hate as Jason. That's what frustrates me.

I agree with a lot of what Zach said, though I understand the third person argument, which is also true. I still feel though that as you said, the books are all the same and too fast paced, not leaving enough room for character development. I don't feel like they all need POVs. Its taking away from their being a team, a unit. They're all wrapped up in themselves and their own romantic pairs, therefore creating mini plots that deviate away from the main plot. Plus, yes, I've tried to get into liking Jason and Piper, and as a whole, their just not my favorite characters.

@ Everinne: Ha, me too. (I have actually threatened to go ahead and
hack at my hair with safety scissors when it gets too much for me.) But I
also really REALLY miss Percy's sarcasm and wit. Frankly, if that were
back in the books, this whole series would be ten times better in my
opinion.

My peeve with Piper was that she is too perfect. She may not be like other Aphrodite girls, but I get tired of the "beautiful no matter what" image portrayed in so many female characters. Not all girls are like that. Something, however small, that really bugged me was her criticizing how much Percy ate in MoA. This may sound a totaly dumb peeve, but it goes along with the whole "perfect" image. I'm a really self concious sort of person, and to have that kind of stuff judged and mocked by a character that is supposed to be "different" just bothers me. Some people may not feel that way, but its how it strikes me, and I know for a fact it's affected other people the same way. That may not make any sense, it's hard to explain.

I think Annabeth is better cause as Zach said, she wakes up, looks, eats, and over all acts human. She's just over all a better example and stronger female character than Piper. Beauty to me is just not something that should be highlighted all the time in female characters. Annabeth is never described as being unattractive, but she's not drop dead gorgeous either. She to me represents the kind of honest beauty all girls have.

Sorry. Again, this is just again from a girl who is constantly bombarded with this kind of thing.

I like Piper wayyyy more than I like Jason. He just bothers me!  Yes, he has his flaws, but he just seems a little one dimentional and boring.

I agree. One thing that I kind of liked in PJO as opposed to HoO was that maybe because of Percy's first-person narration, he never made continual comments on how the other characters looked. After a preliminary description of some characters, it didn't really matter what they looked like, so long as they had strong personalities--Annabeth included. It was her forceful nature which was so likeable and memorable, not her looks. But since everything is kind of in love with each other in HoO, we have to be subjected to continual references to how people dress, how Hazel looks cute in a bandana, etc.

Leo is the BEST new character and personally I think he'll kill Nica and possibley Hazel or Leo.

Three things:

1. I prefer the US cover to the UK cover even though I like that the UK cover has all seven, but... Frank is... white?

2. If everyone else has so many characteristics of their godly parent, why doesn't Percy wake up smelling like ocean? Hate the sight of seafood? Wake up every morning at some early hour to go for a swim?

3. I strongly disagree with the notion that not wearing makeup makes a girl stronger/more human/better than other girls.

As a crazy lover of Norse mythology, I am REALLY excited for his next series!

I would want to be a daughter of Odin, because he's wise and controls RAVENS!!!
