Chatterbox: In This Month's Issue

August MCUHi

August MCU

Hi! We're Amethyst |and her AEs!!!|, welcoming you to the August MCU. Little introductions all around, and then we will begin.

^I'm Vireo - NOT the bossy one, whatever Eri might tell you. The one who has, you know, flair. Oh, and I'm she/her.^

|I take that "whatever Eri might tell you" as an open invitation to say whatever pops into my head about her. But, introductions, boringly, so I'm Eri, he/him.|

~Ibis, she/her - I'll try to keep things reasonable around here, but no promises.~

/Silvan, she/her/

{And I am the star of the show. Aldebaran, pleased to meet you. And he/him.}

The Important Dates are contributed to by CelineBurning Bright's AEs, ***Celine*** and <Tumblebug>.

And MCUs would never be MCUs without Ella Starburst, who started them, or the moment of silence *ah, sIlEnCe* dedicated to her at teh start of each MCU, so, a moment of silence please to Ella Starburst. Thank you, Ella!!

This month, August, ladies and gentlemen, we bring you a unique privilege - Important Dates, provided by the CBer...

MUFFIN!

No, wait, that's not right. Sorry for the glitch, all CBers, it was *cough cough* a typing mistake, the sort of thing you will come across in newspapers now and then. We meant, of course, it was...

KIWI!

Wait, what - oh, terribly sorry, our reporter was looking at the wrong papers. While he gets his thingies in order, we will take the advantage to tell you that we were named the Most Competent MCU Creators of teh Year! *confetti* All right. The CBer was...

ORCHID!

Well, yes - *cough cough* - TO CONTINUE. Important Dates~

Some Notable Month Long Observances~

August is...

- International Peace Month (a time to reflect on WWI), NOT to be
confused with International Peace DAY on Sep 21! ***whaa??? I'm
confused.*** <It's not THAT hard to understand!> ***But is it
August or September??*** <what month are we talking about?! Look at
the title!> ***oh*** <*face-palms*> ..... ***I'm still
confused***

-  for all those dog-lovers out there, National Dog Month! <eek!
Dogs? Where?!> ***but dogs are ADORABLE!!*** <yeah, until they
SQUISH you!>

- National Hair Loss Awareness Month! This is an actual issue and ppl
need to talk about it! And I actually didn’t know this until literally
right now when I stumbled upon National Hair Loss Awareness Month, so,
hey! It’s doing its job!

break, people! Buy supplies! Get into the schedule of waking up early
again! We’re going back to school (but admittedly this isn’t so bad. I,

Relax, Celine! You don’t even go to school! You live on some remote
island in a faraway ocean where all you do is dream about breaking free,
remember? ***oh, right.***

- related: National Crayon Collection Month. Make sure everyone, no
matter who, has the necessary school supplies needed to get the good
education they deserve!

- Family Fun Month! Have some quality fun times with your family!

- Happiness Happens Month! Oh, I LOVE the wording of this one! It makes
it feel like happiness is a negative thing and someone’s complaining:
“but does happiness HAVE to happen?!” Yeah, sorry, but Happiness
Happens, kid! Just  deal with it! Celebrate the things that make you
happy! ***yayy!!! *does cartwheel in the air* I’M SO HAPPYYYY!!!*** or,
well, yeah! Or you can just be happy for no reason! :)

- National Black Business Month. A great month to celebrate black-owned businesses!! Though all months are great for this!

- National Road Victim Month. Let’s take a moment for those people who
have lost their life to or been injured by our roads and vehicles. Drive
safely and responsibly everyone! Watch out for pedestrians! Follow the
rules!

- Appendix Cancer Awareness Month!

- The Dog Days of Summer. Mon, July 3, 2023-Fri, Aug 11, 2023. <and

~from CelineBurning Bright

LMWAY~

Last /last last last or something/ month we asked you what your most creative way of staying cool during the summer is. Here are our responses:

Poinsettia says: "wear really light clothes, eat ice cream, and take baths with cold water (if you can bear getting that cold)."

CelineBurning Bright says: "Eating cold things, turning up the AC (or going to cooling centers open
to the public), jumping into the pool, chugging cold water with ice
cubes (though this probably isn't that healthy)" ~Who said AC?? Climate change!!!~ ^Ibis :/^ ~Well, it does exist--~ {Shall we just continue?}

Moon Wolf says: "Swimming and eating shaved ice!"

Artemis says: "cold showers! That's all I got. I'm in the more Northern part of the Northern Hemisphere, so it's not super hot here."

Seadragon says: "Take cold showers, suck on ice cubes or eat frozen things, and go
swimming, unless it's so hot that the water isn't very cooling."

And excuse me a moment while I make sure that my AEs aren't arguing again...

/Eek Eri What Are You Doing? With my water bottle??/

|Everyone always picks on me.|

~Leave him alone. He has yet to learn what growing up means.~

/Well I wish he'd leave my water bottle alone... regardless of whether it's grown up or not./

(general chaotic noises in the background)

Do be quiet! I'm trying to concentrate.

~ACK ERI what are you doing with my shorts???~

|Everyone always picks on me.|

/*sagely* Leave him alone. He has yet to learn what growing up means./

{So long as he doesn't mess with my backpack.}

|Hey that's an idea.|

{*groans*}

~See why everyone always picks on you?~

/We don't anyway. Do we?/

*sighs* I can't concentrate with the racket these AEs are making. *leaves the room*

(silence)

/Oh right here's my water bottle./

|*placidly* Glad you found it.|

{You're all impossible.}

Now that that's settled, we continue to... The Advice Column! August is the last month before school begins, and we wanted to know what your best way of preparing for the school year is. Here were the responses we got~

Poinsettia says, "My best way of preparing for it is... not to think about it! That way I
get more rested. And to spend my time doing fun, unstructured things, so
that when September rolls around, I'm readier to actually do something
that requires deep thought and dedication :)"

CelineBurning Bright says, "get into the habit of waking up early again, maybe ease into doing work
again if you're the kind of person who transitions slowly, so do a math
worksheet a day, which will also help if you're doing math and have
already learned (or have been exposed to) the concepts, which will also
(also) make the school year easier. Maybe set goals you want to
accomplish this school year. Honestly, I'm kinda excited for school to
start (though Summer is FREEDOM!!)."

Artemis says, "I think Poinsettia has the right idea? Don't worry about it until it's actually happening."

Seadragon says, "Like people have said, try not to worry about the start of school." /It's a popular opinion./

~And one of the best ways to forget about lOoMiNg DoOm is to listen to music!~ So, to cool down and forget upcoming schoolwork, is our August MCU Playlist, courtesy of Avara (the first five songs) and pangolin (all the rest)~

^We do have CB quotes! pangolin submitted some!^

Ahem. While they're arguing, we also have plenty of quotes from, er, books. Book Quotes, by BookGirl~

"I had made up my mind that if you didn't come tonight I'd go down the track to that big wild cherry tree at the bend, and climb up into it to stay all night. I wouldn't be a bit afraid, and it would be lovely to sleep in a wild cherry tree all white with bloom in the moonshine, don't you think? You could imagine you were dwelling in marble halls, couldn't you?" - Anne in Anne of Green Gables

"'Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents,' grumbled Jo, lying on the rug." - Little Women

“I just drank a cup of black tea mixed with coffee. I have ascended to
another astral plane and I can see ghosts now.” – S. Clockwork

Still going back to the playlist, why not listen with a good book in front of you? Summer is the time for light reads and rom-coms. {(I protest! For the sake of protesting.)} Here is the Book of the Month, from Poinsettia!~

Julieta and the Romeos, by Maria E. Andreu

Julieta is a seventeen-year-old Argentinian American girl who longs for a
more exciting life than the one she's always known - she dreams of
being a famous writer, but at the moment she's just living in a quiet
suburban town and helping out her parents with their restaurant. But one
summer, everything changes. She's taking a writing course, in which her
teacher encourages her to publish her writing online - and when she
starts posting her latest romance on a writing website, she's surprised
when someone called "HappilyEverDrafter" offers to collaborate with her.
Even though she doesn't know who he is, Julieta feels a connection with
him, and she soon becomes convinced he's one of the three cute boys
she's noticed in real life: Lucas, her oldest friend; Calvin, whom her grandmother is determined to set her up
with; and Ryan, who used to be her nemesis but is suddenly showing
another side of his character. But at the same time, she must also
navigate friendship, family, and growing up. Her parents' restaurant has
been struggling since the pandemic lockdowns, and now it's even worse
than before - and worst of all, their marriage seems to be falling
apart. Julieta realizes how much the restaurant and her family mean to
her, just when it seems she might be about to lose them. As Julieta
tries to decide which of the three "Romeos" she's truly in love with,
she also learns who she really is, and what kind of life she wants.
This is a warm, happy novel with some touching moments and plenty of
innocent romance, perfect for summer (not least because it takes place
in summer!) I also think it's especially good for all of us CBers
because it's about a writer, and occasionally the characters discuss
things like worldbuilding and literature and online collaboration on
stories and all those other things we're so familiar with :) I also love
the characters, especially Julieta's grandmother, who's very spunky and
at the same time very loving. Julieta's experiences are super relatable
- her struggles with writing, her occasional perplexity about what to
do in her romantic and friendly relationships, and her gradual knowledge
of who she is. And, last but not least, the ending is unpredictable but
wonderfully satisfying. I would definitely recommend it.
And the last item on our MCU agenda *consults a mile-long list* is - the LotM!!
Honorable Mentions~
Death Valley, CA, and Hawai'i, USA (submitted by Sinusoidal)
Great places to be in the summer! ~Especially Hawai'i. Ooh, I envy you :)~
Laguna Beach in California (submitted by Moon Wolf)
A beach is the perfect place to be when it's hot. Great choice :)
on the sun (submitted by CelineBurning Bright)
This is a feeling that I have sometimes in August - that I'm happily dancing about on the sun. Very innovative :)
3rd Place~eating a popsicle, submitted by Poinsettia. That is the best way to combat the feeling of heat :)
2nd Place~painting the sunflowers, submitted by Artemis. This seems so linked to summer, and I like the idea of sunflowers :)
1st Place~Australia/New Zealand to watch the Women's World Cup!!, submitted by
BookGirl. That would be a great place to be right now, and wonderfully
themed to the month :D
And this is officially all to the August MCU. It's shockingly long ~and shockingly silly ;)~ |Ibis that's what the CB is for!|, but we hope you've enjoyed. Farewell until some other MCU,
Amethyst,

WOO-HOO!! That was wonderful! And thx for dealing with my extremely long thing and (I think you did) erasing the parts I forgot to. Off to eat some popsicles (I wish! I've gotta clean my room now actually)! Also, love all the submissions (quotes, books, music, threads... I'm gonna be busy this August!)! Anyways, nice job hosting! :)

Eek, and the format came out dreadfully. Maybe if I re-copy paste some of it it will come out better?
