Monsters University
Hey, everybody! So, let's get talking about Monsters University, the upcoming prequel to the Pixar classic, Monsters, Incorporated! The new film follows Mike and Sulley's college years and their journey to become scarers. Problem is, they don't get along. When they get kicked out from the University for that reason, they team up with other scare rejects: some of the least scariest monsters ever known!
The trailers are now on YouTube. We can use this thread to discuss our expectations for the movie, and when it comes out, we can use this thread to review the movie after we've seen it!
I was watching the trailer when it broadcasted on Disney Channel, and I danced to the music and said the dialogue along with the onscreen monsters! Twice!

Art? Refresh me breifly on who Art is. Was. Whatever. Doesn't ring a bell.
(June 24, 2013 - 7:32 pm)
I haven't seen it, but I believe Art is purple and majoring in New Age Philosophy. (Does it strike anyone else as odd that they'd offer a major in that and not any other kind of philosophy or even just philosophy generally?)
(June 25, 2013 - 1:12 am)
Art is the purple guy who says "I can't go back to jail!"
Did you really see the movie or are you pulling our legs?
(June 25, 2013 - 10:27 am)
Art. I remember. He was awesome, indeed. Sorry, it's just I don't line up names with characters in movies! I maybe know three or four of the characters' names.
But no, I'm not pulling your leg. Ask Steve. I could summarize the movie, but, you know, spoilers glore.
(June 26, 2013 - 8:42 am)
Did Steve see the movie with you?
(June 26, 2013 - 5:02 pm)
Yes. He's not very good at movies, but I believe he enjoyed it. He had Skittles.

I made myself a monster and I made one for Blu. Mine looked exactly like I would: she looked super smarticle but a little young for her age. The one I made for Blu looked really bored and sophisticated, which isn't her, but it's all purple, so that's good.

Hmm. Cool.
Did you see the movie yet?
(June 28, 2013 - 10:29 am)
I saw it yesterday. It was really good. Squishy is awesome. The ending really shocked me. I wasn't expecting it. It came with a really awesome short that was really artistic and adorable and ohmygosh I can't stop gushing about that short. Like, seriously, Pixar keeps outdoing itself.
Fun fact about the movie (spoiler-free edition): In every movie Pixar does, they put an illusion to the next movie as an Easter egg, In this one, they put dinosaurs in one of the simulators as the Easter egg because the next movie is The Good Dinosaur.

I saw the movie yesterday. I'd post my review now, but I'm in danger of getting caught for using the computer without permission.
Theo, did you stay for the credits?
*SPOILER ALERT*

I'm asking because there was a scene after the credits where the snail who said "I can't be late on the first day!" goes to the classroom to find that the school year has ended because he was too slow.

Okay, my review of the movie at last...
The way it begins is most entertaining, and the quirks are faithful to the original. The character history is interesting, and it explains a lot when Randall Boggs declares bitterly, "That's the last time I lose to you, Sullivan!"
The story is a nice one, though it lacks a real villain, unless you count either ROR, who ridicules Oozma Kappa repeatedly and cruelly, or Dean Hardscrabble, who believes that there is no realistic hope for OK. But niether are really villains. And Dean Hardscrabble certainly shows great interest in Sulley and Mike by the end, even though they... I won't tell.
The movie is constantly entertaining, and the Pixar humor and heartstring tugs are both intact, though this prequel shows its greatness in a way much different from the original. But that way is a very interesting way. The nice little refences to the original - Mike forcing his team to get out of bed and do "scary feet" the way he does Sullet at the beginning of the original, is a most enlightening scene. As is the ending scene culminating in their scare work at Monsters Inc. I don't think that's a spoiler that they get to MI by the end, you already know they do. But I'm not saying how.
So, although it's missing several of the original's quirks, it replaces those with it's own that are equally entertaining.
I hope they do a sequel to the original next.

I saw it yesterday. The beginning when we're introduced to the university itself was probably my favorite part, just because, no, it wasn't exaggerating about what freshmen go through during the first few days. I spent the whole time pretty much flailing and being like "I KNOW THAT PERSON THEY GO TO MY SCHOOL" and then going into paroxysms of rage at the student who didn't bother to bring a pencil to the first day of class. THERE IS ALWAYS ONE. (This is what college does to people, I guess, because the friend I saw it with is also in college and had the same reaction.)
And then we met OK, and I melted because OH MY WORD THEY'RE THE CUTEST AND THE SADDEST AND JUST ALSDFHJA;FHJKA;; I WANT TO HUG THEM ALL.
...I think at this point, Pixar is just showing off their ability to make absolutely anything into woobie fodder. Business cards. Freaking. business. cards. But they were so sad and minimalist and default font-y and kind of tattered and damp looking and there was so much character in those cards that I just wanted to huggle Don FOREVER until he stopped being sad. The end. (oh I'm such a sap, aren't I?)
Dean Hardscrabble was the absolute best. British Cockroach/Dragon hybrid FTW.
"I can't go back to jail!" almost killed me from laughing.
I love that they subvert the expectations for your typical College Underdog Team story, and that Sully and Mike take the H2$ approach to success.
