Might I point out that people have dated at more than ten years apart? Even married? One of our (I say our, but I mean America's) presidents did, actually. As well as this cute little moment from Daisy's Diner where Nieke and Alex were together--

Not all ships have no evidence, you see. All of our Alex ships have some decent bases. Viola? Could you please roll in the projector? Thank you. *Cue power point presentation*
All of my ships have a base. Except for the joke ships, which are two people who hate each other, etc. First part?
Base: The part of a ship
And that base, as of now, is Alex traveling with all the cute female anthros. They obviously care for each other, and Alex and Nieke are shown protecting each other and fighting side by side.
Friendship: The first step
Alex clearly cares for Nieke, as Nieke of him, and over time something as simple as friendship can grow into a deeper kind of love. And us shippers wait for that love to blossom into an elegant flower.
And that is why Alex and Nieke have great shipping potential. As well as Alex and Heather before she died.
