Who else here writes fanfic???? I do, all the time. To date, I have about 26 stories that I'm either working on, have finished, or have discarded. I write mostly Lord of the Rings fanfic, and Silmarillion fanfic, but I started a Redwall one too, which didn't really work out. Oh, and HP too.
I seem to be going insane witth one shot vignettes. That's all I write these days!!!!! I did come up with a awesome plot though (nothing will induce me to tell you what it is until I perfect it!!!)

So you pick a book you want to write your fanfic about.(for me, thats LotR and Sil)
If you want, you can use the authors characters.(i.e. Boromir, Aragorn, Arwen, Galadriel)
You can either make up your own plot in the author's setting (i.e. Gondor, the Shire, Dol Amroth, etc.)
Or you can write a scene from the book from a different character's point of view. For example, Aragorn at the end of the Fellowship of the Ring. "I was panicking, and Dunedain don't panic. Yet the fate of Middle Earth depended on Frodo. Where was he????..." You get the point.
Or you can do a "what if." What if Eowyn had not killed the Witch King? And just go from there.
That's just the basics-I've got to go now but I'll post more later. (There is more about fanfiction!!)

Say I want to make an HP fanfic. Are there things I'm alowed to do and not allowed to? And can I also write in third person? And does it have to be a whole book?

You can do whatever you want as long as the author hasn't said that they don't want it. JKR has said she doesn't object to fanfiction as long as you don't make money from it, so with that you should be fine. There are people who don't like certain things about fanfiction, but that's the same as with anything else. 3rd person is perfectly fine, too. It doesn't have to be a whole book; it can be a single page or a thousand pages--or less, or more.
I'm currently writing the first chapter of Little House In Space, a Little House fanfic. When I finish, I'll write a Next-Gen HP fanfic, and at some point I'd like to write a Marauders'-era Petunia fanfic and a Founders-era fanfic, possibly with Helena as the main character.

I love doing fanfic's! I'm currently doing one with Alex Rider. A while ago I started a warriors one that never got finished. I was at 221 pages when I stopped. I think I'll go back and finish it eventualy though.

Fanfic just isn't my thing, I feel like I'm copying someone, or degrading them, or making my self look like an idiot because they're so mch better than me. :p
