The City of
Chatterbox: Inkwell
The City of
The City of One Thousand Stars
Once upon a time, perhaps long ago, perhaps in the distant future, perhaps now, perhaps stretching between all of those, perhaps in a time that is beyond anyone's imagining, there was a city.
A city with tall majestic buildings made of glass, and tiny dull ones made of wood, and several imposing ones made of stone. A city built where the waters of the Blue Sea and the Winding River meet, a city just warm enough to have winters where, unless things are more extraordinary than usual, it doesn't snow.
But, despite the location and the timing and the climate and the architecture, the City of One Thousand Stars was most special because of its inhabitants. Each of them, young or old, big or small, farmer or writer, trader or leader, just-moved-in or fifth-generation resident, from the time they set foot in the City with an intent to stay, had a special ability. A power, a knack, a savvy, a gift, their own special sort of magic. What in olden times was to be called a star, which lead to the city's name. For instance, one of the inhabitants had never needed to breathe. Another could be invisible whenever they chose. And yet another had the power to tell when fruit was ready to be picked.
In this City, everyone was different, but everyone was kind to one another, because the only thing they had in common was being different from each other. Mostly, that is. Sometimes there were cases of people doing things that were untoward, or rude, or even occasionally illegal.
But most of the time, in the City of One Thousand Stars, everyone helped, everyone listened, and everyone cared.

This is an RP (my first one, so I'm excited), and there are a couple of things I'd like to clarify, because the introduction doesn't explain too much other than what the city's like:
1. Your character can be any age. Children and teens ages 5-17, however, will attend the City School unless you'd like them to be homeschooled. The City School is an institution spread out around the City, with different buildings for different subjects in different areas. It is connected by the City's underground train system (students will ride trains between classes).
2. Characters' powers will only be one ability, like telekinesis or flying or baking pies, as opposed to, for instance, telekinesis, healing, and telepathy.
3. I don't really know what the plot will be like, but it can be relaxed, or mystery-related, or (if we have a lot of school-aged characters) centered around the City School, or something else. Not all characters have to meet each other (the City is fairly large), but they can.
4. You can have up to 5 characters, although you don't need that many.
5. Here is the form:

This. Sounds. Amazingggg!!!! Your introduction was so well written, I loved reading it thank you (especially the first two paragraphs) and they give such a good sense of the city and the history of the name (and the name itself) is awesome too!! Also, I love books where ppl have interesting powers that aren't real powers but more like quirks (e.g. Savvy trilogy, The Midnight Children...) and not having to breathe is really cool! So, excited for this!! :) :)

Power/Ability (magical): it's quite inconvenient really. Her shadow always insists on doing the opposite of what she's doing at any given time, no matter how much she tells it not to!
Strengths (non-magical, also optional): clever, smart, knowledgeable, determined, confident, sure
Weaknesses (optional): not used to losing/being wrong

Appearance: big glasses, small nose, round face, shoulder length brown hair tucked behind ears, a bit short for her age
Power/Ability (magical): can move their senses around. For ex: can taste an apple across the room, can watch a show a block away, can listen into a conversation at the other end of the city, or wherever else needed (e.g. secret room). However, once she sends that sense away, they doesn't have it where she is now until they calls it back, it's always just doing its job, sending signals back to her like always, just in the place they imagines it. If that makes sense (hah, accidental pun)?
Strengths (non-magical, also optional): her power, alert at everything (at least until finds something specific to be alert of), smart, ignored, underestimated, motivated, up for (almost) anything
Weaknesses (optional): can be so focused on one thing, misses everything else, their power can be a weakness, ignored, easily jumpscared (but not easily scared)

Shipping: yes please! With anyone around or at her age
Other: even more excited!!!

And, is there a place in the city (e.g. a cafe, a market, a park) that everyone could somehow chance meet/is kinda the central place? Kinda depends on the plot, though, right? Anyways, just wondering! :)
(September 29, 2023 - 9:53 pm)
I haven’t really thought out the City too much, but there would probably be a lot of public outdoor town squares of sorts where people might meet. (You can also make up things if you’d like!)

--Morrigan--
My alarm always goes off at 6:42. I can never set it properly; it was a gift from my mom, who bought it in an antique store. It is, though, shaped like a turtle, my favorite animal.
After I wake up, I feed Greta, get dressed, eat, and walk down all the stairs. I live in a three-story building: I'm on the top, the Delaneys are in the middle, and a grumpy man named Mr. Lethrop is on the bottom. I pass the Delaney kids, Dorrie and Orin, as they're going to school.
"Hi," says Dorrie.
"Hi," I say to her and Orin. "How're you doing?" Dorrie is not having a very good morning at all; yesterday she got an F in a science test and now she has to retake it. Orin, however, is excited, because there's a guest speaker coming to talk about farm-to-table cooking. I know that his star involves gardening; on the Delaneys' balcony are many, many potted plants.
"Good," says Dorrie. "How are you?" I find it interesting when people lie. This particular question never leads to truth: Even if the person is thinking I'm so excited to grow strawberry picking and I can't wait!!!! they still say that they're good.
"Excellent," I say, just to be interesting. Then we exit the building, all of us, and they go down the street to the nearest underground train station, which will take them to school, and I go to Riverside Books.
Cassidy is already there (she is forever punctual, and often a bit early), typing on her laptop.
"Hi," I tell her.
"Hello," she says back. "The dictionaries are due to arrive later today."
"Okay," I say. "I'll keep an eye out." Cassidy is sitting in the window seat; I go to the counter, take my typewriter and put in a fresh piece of paper. I'm trying to write a children's fiction story about a girl who has seven days to find something until the end of time, but right now I need inspiration, so I type my 4 favorite words in the universe: Once upon a time.
So much can begin with that phrase, and that's why I like it.
---------
~Dorrie~
I am dreading science.
My dad and my mom are both unhappy for some reason. I can tell because my mom slams her coffee down on the table enough that it splashes and my dad keeps pushing his glasses back up his nose. Orin is happy. He always is. I think my mom is unhappy because she's always wanted her daughter, me, to follow in her footsteps, but, as my dad will always remind her, Not everyone can analyze a substance just by looking at it. She's a very successful geologist with City University and has always hoped that one of her kids will become a scientist, but Orin wants to become a farmer, and, well, I don't know what I want to do.
As soon as we get to the station, I hug Orin goodbye and then head to the platform for westbound trains. Normally my first class is English, but today I have an extra-early appointment with Mr. Erlenmeyer, the science teacher. Specifically physical science, which is the worst. I get onto the train with a sign in the window marked "Westbound" and wait until we stop at the Science building. I go up all the stairs and arrive outside Mr. E's classroom. I take a deep breath and open the door.
Nobody says anything, which is unusual, because he always says "Ahh, Dorothy!" and then makes some scathing remark. I don't like my full name, because it links me to The Wizard of Oz, which I never enjoyed.
"Hello?" I ask, tentatively. I step inside the room. No one is there, although there's a test on the desk. It's the eighth-grade chemistry test. I start on it--pretty easy, as I spent all of yesterday afternoon memorizing the periodic table and that's what it is.
It takes me about 25 minutes, but no one ever arrives. I don't see Mr. E as I walk through the halls or in the station.
And that is interesting.
(October 6, 2023 - 4:55 pm)
Ooh, I love this!! And thanks for giving me a way to add on :)

I'm updating the book catalog when Morrigan Ensley arrives, and I remind her about the dictionaries arriving later today. Lots of new books have been coming in recently, the catalog seems to need updating at least every day or so as shipment after shipment of publications stream through the open door. Not that I'm complaining, it's good for a bookstore to have new material every so often to keep it in business, but space in our tiny Riverside Books has already been tight, and it only gets tighter. I sigh, typing in the last title, and closing the laptop, while making a mental note to tell August about the situation. I stare out the window of the shop, at the river rushing past the store, beautiful in the early sun's soft light. I can feel my shadow taunting me, and I don't want to look, don't need to look, but I do anyways. Maybe.. just this one time.. my shadow is wiggling its ears and sticking its tongue out at me, and I wonder why I expected anything different. Who ever gave my shadow permission to do something completely different from what I'm doing? It's absurd! I can't even wiggle my ears, and yet here's my shadow, making its ears do jumping jacks and such like it's nobody's business. It's infuriating, really, but I suppose it's just the way things are. I turn back to my work just as the door to the shop opens.
