Villains

Who are your favorite villains?  Least favorite?  What do you think makes a great villain?  Have any of you made any extraordinary (or ordinary for that matter) villains recently?  Also, any advice for making a great villain?  Sorry if there's already a villain thread, though I didn't see one!

Villain chat room! Muahaha!

Oh, and TNÖ, this is where Voldy takes over the world! :)

Yeah... gonna be honest, I haven't read half of those books that you've listed villains from.  So I'm going to go the "fill-in-the-blank" route if you don't mind.

Favorite male villain: Would Gollum qualify?  I love him because I feel really bad for him (it's not entirely his fault that he's so evil) but I love to hate him.  If not then, perhaps President Snow from The Hunger Games series.

Favorite female villain:  Malificent from Disney's Sleeping Beauty, though the concept of a Cruella DeVille is pretty horrible too when you think about it -- skinning puppies?

~Note to all: I can think of a few more, but I seriously doubt any of you read the books they come from.  Anyone read George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series? *inquires hopefully*

(hehehe... my spam thing says "dygn."  It's diggin' my answers.)

Yes, I like Gollum, but I wouldn't call him a villian. The real "Villian" in that situation was the Ring. Gollum was under its power. And yes, Cruella deVil is wonderfully evil. *ADDS CRUELLA TO FEMALE VILLIAN LIST* Sorry, I haven't read those. :(

Then there is that gut from a series of unfortunate events     Count Oaf???

It's Count OLAF, Clair, by the way.  And for the record, I LOVE your name.  I love that you spell it without the "e" at the end.

Okay, I'll accept your argument for Gollum not being the MAIN villain, but the ring can't be the main villain either because it's merely doing what it was created to do.  Ultimately the villain is Sauron, and personally i never found him so scary (good lord, i'm such a nerd... but that's okay).  So in that case I choose President Snow.  He's delightfully evil.

@Clair: I didn't like Count Olaf much. He had no redeeming qualities -- guy even smells bad! I like a villian I can almost feel sorry for.

@Tempest: I do see your point. But I think it was more of one than Gollum, who I've always kind of sympathised with. And I've never heard of President Snow.

@ZNZ:  Never heard of President Snow?  Well in that case, my new friend, you must read The Hunger Games.  I promise you won't regret it.  (And there's only 2 books out right now, so it's not like it's a huge undertaking.  More like a weekend read.)  And I see what you're saying about Gollum, but I think the villains that you can sympathize with make the best villains in the end.  You love to hate them but then feel bad about loving to hate them and you still get surprised and appalled when they do something evil!  (Does that even make a bit of sense?  As I read it back now, I've confused myself.

Also, I wonder why one of my posts was posted twice.  That was kind of weird in a deja vu sort of way.  Admin?

Re: President Snow: I dunno. I found him to be kind of pale and annoying (pale as a character, not pale as a physical trait). Personally, by the end of the second book I hated all the characters except Haymitch, pretty much. Which is why I'm hoping that District 13 will turn out to be a radioactive wasteland, but that's probably not happening.

Re: Double posting: It happens, sometimes. Dunno why.

@TNO:  Everyone BUT haymitch?  Hmm.  I admit, I like him as a character, but I completely felt Katniss was justified in her smack-down session with him.  The reason I liked President Snow as a villain was sort of the reason Umbridge makes a great villain: they smile and put on a show, but you know behind their eyes they're just planning something horrible.  And as for District 13 being a dead end... yeah, don't know if I'd hold my breath for that one.  I'm sad you don't like that series very much, though!  :(   To each their own, I guess.

Yes.

Because, so far as I can tell, he's the only intelligent character in the series.

I actually quite enjoyed Hunger Games, but Catching Fire was distinctly meh until they got to the arena, and then it was still meh but at least people were dying to make up for it. SC is clearly at her best whilst thinking up new ways of killing characters.

Sigh. I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree then. Though I am happy to find someone else who's read the books... not many people I've run across have.

Really? They're actually quite popular in my neck of the woods (Wyoming, that is). We got HG last year for book club, and CF this year, and will probably end up with the third one next year. So I'll end up reading it if that's the case.

Have you heard they're making a movie? I believe it's planned for 2011.

Really?!  A movie?!  That's awesome!!! (oh good lord, i'm turning into one of THOSE girls who uses far and away too many exclamation points.  Quick... I must use an enormous and elitist word to boost my self-esteem.......... a sesquipedalian word.  ahhhh. much better.)  No really though, that's great.  I just hope they pick a good cast and I'm going to pray to every possible deity there ever is, was, and will be that Chris Columbus does NOT direct the film.

I'm planning on it, I'm planning on it! Everybody's been telling me I absolutely have to. So they're on my list. Just haven't gotten to them yet.
