Book Town

Chatterbox: Inkwell

Book Town

Book Town
The town was still. It was almost as if it knew what had happened the night before.
A girl had gone missing.
Everyone knew--or thought they knew--what had happened, but they didn't speak of it, except to offer their condolences.
Within a year, Lùthien Arwen Cappiello was "presumed dead" by all in the town of Carteridge.
...
About year after Lùthiens death, a new family moved to Carteridge--a small, nondescript town in a  state of trees and rain and more trees and rain. It caused a great stir and the whole town knew of it months before the event actually happened. Rarely did people move to Carteridge.
The fact was, Carteridge was a little... odd. Oh, the people in it looked like ordinary people.
But there was one strange difference between it and other towns...
Everything in the town had the name of a book, its characters, or the author, including the people.
In fact, it had got so far that a certain old retired science professor, Mr. Coomis, had speculated that perhaps the town was drawing them in, for they only got, by way of newcomers, "book people," as he called them.
Even Mr. Coomis himself had the name of a book--found in his first name, rarely did people have the last name of a book character, author, or the title, in that his first name was Robin.
You could not imagine a person farther from being 'Robin Hood' than Mr. Coomis. He was an old man who liked his books (of course--the whole town seemed book-obsessed, if only for the names), and his work. For even tough he was retired, he took a great interest in the education of young people, and consistently volunteered at the library and schools.
Carteridge had even gone thus far as to be called 'Book Town' by the inhabitants, though if you said that outside of Carteridge, nobody knew what you were talking about.
But it was well-deserved--for as I have said, every person was named after a book, or a book character, or an author, no matter how small or unknown the book might be.
Such was the case with the new family who moved to Book Town, the Withees.
Louisa's mother, Emily, who was named after Emily Byrd Starr in L. M. Montgomery's Emily trilogy, and her father was named for J. R. R. Tolkien--John Ronald.
Louisa herself was, quite clearly, named for Louisa May Alcott, and she was an avid reader.
But, uncharacteristically, she had not picked up a book in all the drive from the east side of the state to the west side. She had merely stared off into space, thinking.
She knew that her fathers job had carried them here, but could it have been to a less boring place? Portland, say, or Salem? Not some small town in the middle of the mountains? Would that have been too much to ask?
She had packed books, of course, though not once did she read them. She touched pen to paper a few times during the long drive, but other than that, did not break her stem of thoughts.
When they arrived, she was mostly silent, except for exchanging necessary words with her father and mother whenever they tried to engage her in conversation, or ask her for help carrying in boxes.

This is a solo write--my first one XD ! (I apologize in advance if I have violated any rule of solo write-d-ness.)   I'll accept ten main (well, all right, Louisa is my main character, but these characters will be at the forefront) characters. There's a catch--as this is Book Town, the characters have to have names from books. They can be named after book characters, or book authors, except for their last name.

Part I
They had an unexpected surprise on Sunday, the day after they arrived. Their next-door neighbors came over to say hello. There were two girls, one of whom looked to be around Louisa's own age. Both were wearing knee length skirts. The taller girl, who was very pretty, with luscious honey-brown hair and blue eyes, was outfitted in a loose green blouse with cuffs at the end of the sleeves, artistic tucks in the garment, and a darker, more verdant knee-length green skirt. The other girl was dressed in blue, with a blue-grey t-shirt and a knee-length skirt about the same color. The shorter girl had white leg braces, and was supported by white crutches. She had rather messy brown hair in a braid just past her shoulder blades.
All this Louisa took in as she stood rather awkwardly next to her mother, on the doorstep of their house. She also noted the pretty, though slightly plump, woman who was obviously the girls' mother, for she and her elder daughter had the same shade of hair, and eyes.
Louisa's mother greeted them cordially.
"Won't you come in?" Louisa's mother asked smilingly, gesturing to the slightly open door of their new house. Mrs. Stewart (for that was the name of the woman) assented and the door was fully open, revealing boxes stacked off to the sides in the corners.
"Sorry," Louisa's mother said, "we've only just arrived--yesterday--and haven't had time to unpack even a little yet."
A cautious mrow? Came from the side of the room. Aslan came into view, his gold-brown fur stuck highly on end.
Louisa's mother laughed. "Meet Aslan, our Maine Coone. You can pet him, if you like."
Louisa didn't blame their neighbors for being intimidated by Aslan. After all, he was about as large as a Maine Coone could be, at two feet high and about three feet long. He was as big as a large dog. Thus the name 'Aslan'.
"Oh, it's fine, he's a real sweetie," Louisa said, the first words she'd spoken to their visitors,  slipping off her shoes and navigating the Chinese puzzle that were the boxes stacked everywhere. She went up to Aslan and held out her hand. Aslan sniffed it and let her pet him. She cleared a few papers off of their coffee table so that she could pet him properly sitting down.
"The name fits him," Mrs. Stewart said. "I don't believe I've introduced my daughters yet, speaking of Aslan. How rude of me! You've told me your Louisa's name, and so this is Elizabeth--" she gestured at the taller girl, who grinned and said hello politely, "and Lucy," Mrs. Stewart concluded, waving at the other girl. Lucy.
"Why don't we let the kids socialize in the living room while we go chat," Louisa's mother suggested politely, and the grownups went around the corner into the kitchen. Clearly this was going to be a long visit...
Louisa felt the urge to shout "No! Don't leave me!" But she didn't.
Louisa hated starting conversations. She always felt awkward, and shy when exposed to new people. Lucy apparently felt the same, and stared at the ground while she was seated on one of the Withees' couches. Elizabeth, however, had no qualms about starting a conversation.
"Are you going to school next week?" She asked Louisa. "You'd be, what, Lucy's age?"
Louisa couldn't help it. She bristled. "I'm thirteen, thank you. And, yes, unfortunately I will be going to school next week."
She hadn't meant it to sound so stiff, but she had meant every word that she said.  "I mean," she hastily amended, "Not that I have anything against public school..." Well, no, that wasn't true. She DID have something against public school and was deeply dreading returning to it. "And I didn't mean to be rude," she concluded miserably. "It's my height. It makes people think I'm younger than I really am."
"Ah," Elizabeth said. "Call me Beth, if you would..."
"I was named after Louisa May Alcott," Louisa blurted out. "You?"
She was quietly hoping she'd get the reference, but it didn't happen.
"I'm named after a character in the Homelanders series," Beth said. She turned to Lucy, who was still staring at the floor. "And Luce is named after the Lucy in the Chronicles of Narnia.
Louisa shared that, while she had never read the Homelanders series, she had read the Chronicles of Narnia many times, "As you can probably tell," she added, waving a hand at her Maine Coon cat named Aslan. She smiled at Lucy, who shyly smiled back. "We only adopted him a few years ago," Louisa continued, stroking Aslan with a hand.
She suddenly felt shy and self-conscious, next to the pretty, older girl with such beautiful hair and fashion sense. Louisa herself was only wearing black jeans, as she usually did, and a black t-shirt with sequins along the hem with words on it saying 'So many books, so little time', and she felt her purple glasses made her look... dorky. And her hair, as usual, was still in a braid. She'd slept in it, and felt it showed.
None of this showed on her face, however, although she was quiet for a few moments before offering them a tour.
"There are boxes everywhere," she said as she led them down the hall away from the living room, after receiving parental permission. "But most of the furniture's already placed, and we've unpacked a little bit since yesterday." She flung a hand at the bathroom to their left. "That's the bathroom--Mom and Dad's. They sleep on this floor." After telling them this fact, she ushered them to what was her mother and fathers room, which was quite spacious, an extra bedroom, "Which will be used for storing things--namely, boxes--until we can unpack fully," Louisa informed Beth and Lucy. They walked slower than Louisa would have liked, keeping pace with Lucy, who was slower than her older sister and Louisa. "And this is the laundry room." That saying, they turned back around and headed through the kitchen up the stairs, to the waves and "Hello, travelers!" Of Louisa's father. All the while they were followed by Aslan, the giant Maine Coon.
Louisa reflected as she showed them her new room, with the dwimmer light, as she called it. You used your fingers to turn the solitary bulb in the middle of the room, by tapping it, which had a low ceiling. It was probably a good thing that she was so short, Louisa reflected, considering the height of that room. Even her boots made her barely five foot two, at their highest (she had more than one pair of boots), and that was still not tall enough to reach the ceiling. It was piled with boxes, but had a capital little closet (also full of boxes) with a hanger to one side and a window on one of the others, along with a window seat. There was also a locked door opposite the clothes bar which, no matter how hard Louisa pulled, would not open.
"It must open from the other side," Louisa suggested. Beth nodded, looking faintly disappointed.
She showed them the large downstairs den. It had a bar, and that too was full of boxes. Louisa explained that they were probably going to put their games down there.
After that, they went back upstairs, and spent the rest of the afternoon awkwardly making small talk.
Finally, they left, and Louisa spent the rest of the day unpacking with her parents.
Her mother let her know that Beth's mother had said that school would be starting in a few weeks. Louisa acknowledged this with a nod.
She knew that, all right.
