So, so sorry! I had a bit of writer's block, but I know where I'm going now.

Part One

~

A small girl with feathery brown hair crouched in the corner, almost invisible as she was hidden in the shadows. Paper crinkled and rustled as she turned the page of her book. For a second her dark brown eyes lit up in excitement, an she gave a small squeak, but she quickly clamped her mouth shut, seemingly afraid of being heard. Nestling back into the corner, she continued to read in silence, her eyes roving the intricate illustrations of dragons, princesses, and fairies.

Suddenly the door slammed open and a tall figure stomped into the room. The girl flinched backwards, trying to burrow into the corner. The man caught sight of her and slowly walked over to her. Lashing out and grabbing her arm, he tore the book out of her grasp. "Reading again, Leafpool?" he growled as she numbly shook her head. "You know there's no room for spending on books in this household" Dropping her roughly, he pointed outside with on meaty finger. "Go an' do something useful with yourself!" Leafpool jumped up and darted outside, almost smashing into her sister.

The little girl's ginger hair fell into her eyes, and she brushed it out, staring at Leafpool. "Do you have the book?" she asked hopefully, her eyes wide. Leafpool's heart felt sick as she shook her head no and pulled Rose around to the back of the house.

"I'm sorry, Rosey," she said quietly. "I couldn't get it." Rose's face fell, and she sighed, sounding much older than her true age.  Leafpool sat down against the wall of the house, and and after a second her little sister followed."It's okay," soothed Leafpool. "It'll be better tomorrow."

Suddenly a shape burst from the bushes, feet pounding hard on the grass. Leafpool jumped up, stumbling, her limbs frozen with terror. But within a second she recognized the delirious excitement on the face of the girl rushing towards her. Crashing into her arms, Lavender gave a gasp of breath, her hazel eyes shining. Leafpool opened her mouth to tell her to slow down, but before she could Lavender burst into speech.

“Leafpool! Rose! I was in town getting some bread and you’ll never guess what I saw!” Not waiting for them to guess, she continued. “Queen Brightstar! I thought she was just a myth, even though I obviously know about the magical word, but she was there, all real and beautiful! She said she was looking for fine young people to take to a peace bringing trip in the magical word! I wanted to go so badly but she would never notice someone like me so instead I came back here to tell you!” Breathing hard, Lavender waited for Leafpool’s reply.

Leafpool could feel Lavender’s infectious excitement, but she was also cautious. She had heard rumors that Queen Brightstar was cold and ruthless, and followed in the footsteps of her mother, Queen Moonlight, who had almost started a war. Still… Leafpool couldn’t resist the allure of traveling to magical world to attempt to keep peace between both worlds. She could even be the very link that connected and saved the two realms forever.

But then she felt herself being dragged down to earth by reality. There was no way she could leave her sisters all alone, and risk not coming back from the magical world. But just as she turned her head to tell this to Lavender, she saw their faces, both ablaze with excitement and hope. The words froze on Leafpool’s tongue, and eventually dispersed. She sighed and said “Let’s go see what it’s all about.”

~~

Three shadows slid from the back alley and joined the crowd, smoothly winding around the others. Eventually they pushed into the front row, right up against the street. "Where is she?" asked Rose, her eyes round with excitement. Leafpool gently tugged her back as she began to stray into the street.

"I don't know, but I'm sure she'll appear soon." Not a second after she said this, there was a sharp flash of light, and the silhoutette of a chariot appeared in the blaze. Just as soon as it came, it vanished, leaving the stately figure of Queen Brightstar perched atop her chariot. A gasp swelled from the crowd, but was quickly silenced by Brightstar's icy glare. Her eyes roved the crowd, seeming to look into everybody's soul. Leafpool felt rose shiver as she stood beside her, and she hugged her sister closer. Finally, when Brightstar's gaze came to bore into Leafpool, she tried to erase all fear from her mind. Brightstar's eyes momentarily widened; then she sat back.

She raised her hand, pointing with assuredness in the crowd at a figure. It wasn't until all the heads in the crowd turned the Leafpool realize Brightstar was pointing at her. Lavender gasped, trembling. Rose squealed, though Leafpool couldn't tell whether it was with joy or fear. "This is the one," Brightstar annouced. "She will be coming with me."

"But--" began Leafpool, more terrified than she cared to admit.

Brightstar's eyes narrowed. "You will be coming with me," she said, her tone imperious. Leafpool began to feel as if it wouldn't be that bad, that she would come with her...

"But what about my sisters?" she felt herself saying. No... what about them? her mind whispered. I just need to come with Brightstar... Queen Brightstar rolled her eyes, then sighed and said, "They will be provided for here, I suppose." Smiling to the crowd, she purred, "After all, we can't have unhappy campers!" They all nodded, and with a calm, dreamy easiness, Leafpool walked from her sisters side and clambered into Brightstar's chariot. Rose cried out, and Lavender grabbed for her hand, but Brightstar waved them away.

"Don't worry," said Leafpool. Just as the chariot flashed back through the portal, she turne to face them. Her eyes half-closed and glassy, she said, "I'll be perfectly fine."

Part Two

~~

"...and from there I followed the tracks until it lead me to something very suspicious! Do you know what it was? I bet you know what it was. Because it was YOU all along, brother! It was a smudgy fingerprint, cream embedded in the lines! I knew you'd stolen my special-made cake, and now I have proof!" Finishing, Cleo stepped back, smirking at her brother. He jolted as if he's just been woken up, and stared blankly at her knowing smile.

"W-what? Oh... yeah, I ate it," he said, then his head flopped back. A moment passed, then she heard a soft snore. Cleo narrowed her eyes angrily, then whipped around and stomped away. What was the point of doing anything if her lazy brother would just confess anyways? As she stepped out of David's room, a servant appeared, looking flustered.

"Terribly sorry, ma'am, but I looked everywhere for another cream cake and just couldn't find one! Please, would anything else do?" Cleo paused, then held up her hands.

"No, it's okay," she said, shaking her head. The servant hesitated, and asked again. "No, really," she insisted. "I'm fine. Thanks for looking, though." Finally he nodded and set off again. She stepped past him and continued on to her own room, burying her face in her sheets. Sighing, she rolled over, tangling the linen around herself. Nothing ever happened here. If she lived on the streets, there would be more interesting mysteries to solve than the 'Cream Cake Incident'. Pressing herself deeper into her bed, she shut her eyes tight and wished for sleep. For dreams, especially. She could do anything in her dreams.

Quietly, a few moments later, she got her wish.

Cleo sat up in her bed, throwing her covers off. Standing up and stretching, she slowly walked over to her mirror and peered in, brushing her wavy hair from her face. Suddenly there was movement at the edge of the frame. She looked at it to see the face of a woman there, her lavender eyes sharp. Cleo stumbled back with a shriek, slamming into someone behind her. She felt a hand on her shoulder, steadying her. She whipped around to see Queen Brightstar standing there, her long, glossy hair falling over her shoulders. "Hello, young one," she said in a singsong voice.

"Queen... Brightstar?" whispered Cleo disbelievingly. The queen laughed, a high peal of sound.

"Of course, little Cleo. Your family is so classy and distinguished, that I've come to invite you to my world to make peace between our two realms, to heal the damage my mother nearly invoked. Wouldn't you llke to come?" she asked, her eyes glittering. Cleo nodded, smiling. How amazing and interesting did a trip to the magical world sound? Quickly she turned and wrote a message on her mirror with a red-colored melting candle, the wax sealing the words in place. 'Don't worry, mother, I'm just with Queen Brighstar, helping to fix the worlds!' A bit of wax dripped down next to the words, slowly spilling down the mirror. Then she turned and took Brightstar's and and followed her into the portal.

In the morning Cleo's mother poked her head into her room to wake up her daughter. Tsking at the messy bedsheets, she walked over to wake Cleo. Her face turned white wiith fear as she realized that no one was in the bed, and the sheets were cold. She screamed, and the rest of her family came rushing in. David pointed to the mirror with a gasp. On it shaky words were inscribed, like someone on their last breath.

'Mother... i WIll miSs yoU... RemEMBer mE..." Something wet and red dripped down next to it. Cleo's mother fainted, collapsing on the ground. No one noticed the shimmer of magic around the words and the blood.

No one noticed the red candle lying, forgotten, on the floor.
