Care Packages

Care Packages

Last time I did these, they were fun and not too challenging, so I think I might try them again. Comment telling me a bit about yourself - maybe some problems you've been having you want advice for, your favorite books or music or something, or really anything, and I'll reply with a "care package" - it might have advice, a written picturing, compliments, music recommendations, whatever you need. I'll do my best to get them out in a timely fashion.

Um, hi!

So, Idk if I've been having any problems, rly? I've just been.. feeling kinda down lately, even tho I'm SO EXCITED for the Book Club and have been reading ALL THESE AWESOME BOOKS and SCHOOL IS STARTING SOON which as I've probably mentioned 5 times here already I'm transferring and it's supposed to be a rly good community where I'm going (and it's a private school so it's also supposed to be rly advanced or something??) so I'm SUPER EXCITED ABOUT THAT too, and plus the CB always cheers me up!! So, yeah, no reasons. Just sometimes I feel like everything is spinning out of my control (and btw, I think I love to be in control? Idk, when I think about self-awareness, I start running in circles, but I can make all my personality traits go back to this one point), which just is rly weird Ig?? Idk. And btw I don't have depression or anything, just... Ig how to describe it is I like to think A LOT and I like to mull over life and stuff and then I can't stop and I don't want to stop anyways bc I love doing that but I just realized that... umm, some crazy theories and... anyways, I'm totally rambling here. Sorry. Pls just ignore all that. And I rly do love to think about this stuff, it fascinates me and makes me happy and in awe of the world and appreciative. So, uhh. Nvm. Do you have any recommendations for books or music? You prob already know I basically love everything, with the exception of a few. I like books that... that are funny or clever or thrilling or make you think or are diverse or are needed or deal with real-life problems (I think realistic fiction may be my favorite genre) or are just good books in general. I like music that's like what I said about books, just I like anything with a good rhythm or beat or is whimsical or unique. And btw you're rly awesome (which you probably already know but I'll say anyway) and I was reading your other care packages thread and your advice is always so perfect and well thought out!!

Or books that are just interesting

Hey, Celine!

I can totally understand feeling like things are spinning out of control and I want to assure you that everyone feels that way sometimes. However, if you're feeling like things are spinning out of control so much that it's stressing you out and giving you anxiety, you need to talk to an adult - a parent/guardian, doctor, or school counselor is who I'd recommend. They can help you. It doesn't really sound like you have a problem to me, but if you feel like you do, that's where you should go.

If you love thinking about life and that sort of thing, you may discover an interest in philosophy (I love philosophy). Here's some books on philosophy for kids I found online you might want to try:

- Philosophy for Teens: Core Concepts and Life's Biggest Questions Examined by Mark Linsenmayer (I think of these options this is the best, but the site said it's mostly for readers 12-16)

- Big Ideas For Curious Minds (this one got mixed reviews but mostly good ones. Site says it's for readers 9-10 and you might want an adult to read it with you if you're around that age)

- Philosophy for Kids: 40 Fun Questions That Help You Wonder About Everything! by David A. White

You should also try listening to podcasts. One podcast I reccomend is a podcast about ethics for kids. It's called Short and Curly.

For some more book recommendations, I reccomend The Next Great Paulie Fink by Ali Benjamin a realistic fiction story that also explores philosophy. I think you will like it. It's hard to explain what it's about, but it's a pretty creative idea.

You also might want to try The Miscalculations of Lightening Girl, by Stacy McAnulty. A family member of mine who really only likes realistic fiction read it and enjoyed it. This one is about a girl who got struck by lightning and became a math genius. However, despite being smart, she struggles in other ways.

I also recommend All the Answers by Kate Messner. All the Answers is about a girl who accidentally stumbles upon a pencil that can answer pretty much whatever question she writes with it. It's a very good and creative story.

One book I have yet to read is The Firefly Code by Megan Frazer Blakemore. It looks amazing but I haven't found the time to read it. It's about a town where everyone's lives are pretty much perfect until some secrets are discovered. If you read it, let me know what you think!

And definitely try reading some dystopias. They can get a little dark, so be warned, but I think they'd be right up your alley. One classic dystopia is The Giver by Lois Lowry. This book was pretty good but not my favorite, still, I think you should give it a shot, and if you like it there's a few books that continue the series. Another very popular dystopia is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, which I also haven't gotten around to but really want to.

I'm not really sure what to recommend for music. Could you tell me a few specific songs or artists you like so I have something to go on?

I hope you enjoy these recommendations <3

Thank you for this Peri! Sorry I'm responding so late, I don't think the spinning out of control thing is really a PROBLEM, per say, it's just something that's kinda like, this is happening. But thanks! And, you're right, I do like philosophy (I rly liked The Princess who Flew with Dragons, which is kinda like princesses and dragons and mythical creatures talking about philosophy (in between the story which was more what I was expecting), a welcome surprise), and I'll make sure to check out the titles you recommended (I AM 12-16 years old, so I'll definitely read the first option!). I have read and liked The Next Great Paulie Fink, Miscalculations (savant syndrome! Plus I've read some other books by Stacy McAnulty I also liked), and All the Answers (I rly like Kate Messner too, Breakout is one of my favorite books of all time), so I will be sure to look at The Firefly Code, which sounds really good. I've also been wanting to read The Giver quartet and The Hunger Games (which my parents said is fine so they'll lend their books to me). And, you're right, a little dark is right up my alley (the other day I had a play date with my friends and we were like, ok, see you, have a nice rest of the day! And a nice rest of your life! Then my friend's dad was like, what? And she was like in case something happens and we don't see each other again). So... yeah. Umm, artists... after listening to Poinsettia, I tried some Martina McBride and really liked it. I also like... basically all the songs on the Puddings Playlist. I like Teresa Teng and Ms. Lauren Hill and Janet Jackson and Taylor Swift (tho I'm not a swifte) and Maroon 5 and Kelly Clarkson and... you can see me naming everyone who comes on the radio plus who's in the book Music is my Life (basically a book with 100 different artists). :) Ig what are some of your favorites?

Wow, you weren't kidding when you said you weren't picky! Here's a few of my favorite songs:

- Tell Me by The Drives

- Dizzy by chloe moriondo

- Sofia by Clairo

- Here I Go Again '87 by Whitesnake

- Matilda by Harry Styles

- Her Name by Pamelo

Thank you so much for doing this, Peri! It’s a really sweet idea, and your advice is always so thoughtful <3 I could use a care package, if you have the time :)

I’ve been really stressed and anxious lately (so much so that I haven’t really been on the CB much, which is only increasing my stress—); I’m starting high school in September, and I won’t know anyone there. It’s much more academically challenging than my middle school (which I’m actually excited about), and while I’m not too worried about the workload, I am kind of nervous about how that’ll impact my social life. I’m not going to be the “smart one” anymore, which I’m honestly relieved about — but at my middle school, people only talked to me because I was smart, or whatever. I’m just worried about making friends — I’m pretty quiet irl (yay social anxiety), plus I don’t have social media or have any of the interests that other people my age seem to have, so I've always struggled to make friends. So yeah, I’ve just been really stressed lately, and I’m dreading the start of the school year :/

So, for the care package — some compliments would be nice, if that’s not too much? and maybe some song recommendations (I tend to listen to indie/pop/chill-ish stuff (lately I’ve been listening to boygenius, Taylor Swift, and Gabrielle Aplin)) or maybe some show recommendations (stuff like Amphibia and TOH) if you’re open to that? but anything’s okay :)

Again, tysm for doing this, Peri! :)

I'm so sorry you've been feeling anxious and stressed. I can't really say what you should do about that (and I'm not sure if you were asking for advice or just ranting, so if it's the latter you can ignore this), but there are a few things you could consider:

- Yoga. While it might sound a little silly, yoga is supposed to improve mental health (it's actually great for you in a number of ways), especially when you include meditation and/or breathing exercises. If you do it every day, or every other day, or every week, or some specific time like that, the sense of routine might also help calm you down.

- Having a "relax hour." Or maybe a half hour, or maybe two hours. Or even just five minutes. Depending how much time you have, you can listen to your favorite song, go for a walk, watch a movie - whatever makes you happy when you need a little pick-me-up. Don't push yourself to have fun, of course, if you're not feeling it, but distracting yourself might help you.

- Getting outside more. Some research suggests that going outside and spending time in nature can improve your mental health. Maybe try taking a walk or riding your bike around your neighborhood a few times a week, or if you live in a city, heading to a park. Going outside might also help you appreciate the little things - flowers, birds, sunsets.

- Drinking tea. I like drinking tea and I just did a search that says some types of tea soothe anxiety, including oolong tea and chamomile (chamomile might also make you sleepy, which is good if your anxiety is also causing sleep struggles. Check and make sure the tea is decaf!). I would recommend doing some research if you're interested so you can pick whatever tea you think will best work to help you relax a bit.

- Seeking professional help. I'm not suggesting this because I think you're sick or need to be fixed: Therapy Is For Everyone. While some therapists aren't awesome, I think it might be worth a shot. I love giving advice and support where I can, but there's only so much I confidently feel I can do for you.

Friendships are hard, and I know what it's like to feel like nobody your age gets you. High schools are bigger than middle schools (as I'm sure you've assessed by now XD), though, and often have many more clubs and classes and people to meet. Here's some clubs and sports you might enjoy if they're available at your school:

- Art Club

- Choir or band (are you into making music? If not, you might want to give it a try if your school has a music program. I think you'd enjoy it and it probably won't be as much pressure as schoolwork)

- DnD/tabletop rpg games club (I'm not sure if you school will have this one, but if they do you could try it. I think you'd have fun playing that sort of game - making a character and roleplaying, telling a story, that sort of thing).

- Field hockey (usually the team for field hockey is mostly or all girls, but I don't think you're required to be or identify as one in most cases. You might like this sport. It's a bit like soccer in some ways, except you have a stick and the ball is much smaller and made of… well idk what it's made of but you get the idea)

- Cross country (if you like running? If you don't, skip this one lol)

Of course there will probably be many more options, and I don't know what they have at your high school. All I'm saying is, pick clubs and/or sports you're interested in, and you'll get to do something you like while meeting and working with people who also like those things. It's a win-win. Maybe you could try a mix of things you already know you like and things you are interested in learning about. Like, for example, I love writing and have a lot of experience in it, so maybe I'd join the school newspaper. But although I'm interested in cooking, I'm not very skilled at it, so maybe I'd join a cooking club if one was available where I could learn more.

That's all I have in the way of advice, but compliments are easy. Pangolin, you're one of the first people I talked to on the CB, and you were so kind right of the bat. I had been feeling nervous about getting to know people in a new place that felt so big, but you made me feel so much better, and I'm so grateful to have you as my friend. You are creative and an amazing writer (I am so sorry about not keeping up with your ski lodge! I WILL get around to reading it eventually, and the parts I've read are fantastic). You are caring and passionate - I love that you named yourself after the pangolin and have been spreading awareness about the endangered species here on the CB. I didn't even know what a pangolin was before meeting you! I really admire your dedication and quiet but firm confidence in who you are. Thank you for always being there for me and for everyone else here. Thank you for being you.

I almost teared up typing that. I hope you know how much I genuinely appreciate you. Love you platonically, pangolin <3

Okay, song recommendations. I can do that.

- chloe moriondo. I haven't heard too much of her music but I think you'd like it. One of my favorites of her songs is Dizzy.

- Her Name by Pamelo

- Clairo. I think you'd like her in general but some songs to start with are Amoeba, Sofia, Alewife, Blouse, and Softly.

- Closer to Fine by the Indigo Girls. I would reccomend trying some songs by them if you haven't. They seem like your kind of band.

- I Guess That Was Goodbye by Lyn Lapid

- The Outsider by Lyn Lapid

- In My Mind by Lyn Lapid

- You and Me On the Rock by Brandi Carlile. Definitely try Brandi Carlile if you don't know her, I think you'll really like her and if you do you can also listen to a band she's in called The Highwomen.

This is getting pretty long (sorry, Admin!!), so I'll only reccomend two shows really quickly: Carmen Sandiego, for one. It's aimed at kids and might seem a little immature at times but mostly I think anyone can enjoy it - geography facts, strong female characters, and casual representation make this show great. Also Gravity Falls, if you haven't watched that. It's awesome.

And that's it! I hope I was able to brighten your day a little <3

I realize now my wording about field hockey may have been offensive - I said "be or identify" as a girl when really I should've just said "identify," because anyone who identifies as a girl deserves to be referred to as one and treated respectfully. I'm sorry if this mistake hurt anyone!

@Pangolin, Ik you didn't ask me, but I just wanted to add my own two cents onto what Peri said (which, btw, I completely agree with all of that anyways, Peri, you always say everything so well), because you really are absolutely amazing!! You're so kind and caring, and yesss pangolins thank you!! (conservation!!), and, well, don't know if you remember but you were the first person (not including the admins, thank you admins!!) to welcome me onto the CB (actually, onto Kyngdom, but still) with all these amazingly helpful links (and I see that I was not the only one) so, just wanted to say, you're an awesome, lovely person, not to mention being an astoundingly talented writer/artist/poet (I always enjoy reading your absolutely terrific Ski lodge (with that beautiful picture of Wraith) that's been going on for like 8 months (over half a year!) now, and your poems are always utterly perfect, and that piece of description you did on the stylish writing contest was just WOW. I could read a thousand-page book full of that for forever and ever and be perfectly happy!) So yeah. Hope high school is ok and challenges you academically and you make some friends that will always be there for you (and remember, the CB will always love and welcome you!)! And, Ik that you also didn't ask for my advice, so pls feel free to completely ignore this, but I feel like I've also always kinda been that quiet girl in the back of the class that's smart too, but last year, I started coming out of there, partly bc of my awesome classmates who decided to start a newsletter to record the happenings of our absolutely chaotic class, which I became a writer of, and as a result, started getting more involved in class stuff and ppl started knowing who I was more?? And Ik you're in a completely different situation than me (middle school vs. high school), but seeing as you're an amazing writer at all, maybe consider joining a newspaper?? Or something of the sort, where you can kinda be your self, not just your smart side, more? And plus make friends?? Idk. You should probably just follow Peri's advice, it's so much better than mine.

P.S. I wanted to say, thank you so so so so so so SO much (even though it was inadvertently) for introducing me to SoC!! I absolutely loved it!!

Oh gosh, thank you so much! I'm so glad I was able to welcome you into the CB! :) And it always means a lot when people like my writing, so thank you! <33 I really appreciate your enthusiasm and creativity, and you bring so much to the CB (like the book club, for instance)!

Your advice is really helpful, so I'll be sure to keep it in mind!

Also, I'm so happy you enjoyed Six of Crows! If you want to talk about it anytime, let me know! :D

Ahhh, it made me so (so so so) happy to read this!! Especially coming from someone like you! Thank you!!

also, glad my advice helped! Maybe I should take my own advice too, bc now I just started my first day at my new (ackk fancy-schmancy private) school where I know absolutely no one except for two ppl already in friend groups and two people who are my classmates' (from my old school) older siblings. So yeah. So, I'm back to being the quiet kid who spends all her time at social events alone with a book (and at this school there is quite literally like a social event EVERY. DAY. And then they take class time off each day for a "social period" to go hang out with friends and such). :) But honestly, I'm happy being alone w/ a book. It's just that this is the type of school full of outgoing ppl that, when they see someone alone, they think lonely, then try to make small talk or match me up with someone for a friend, which is what makes me lonely, I was perfectly fine before (not counting the anticipation that someone will do that which so takes over my mind that I can't focus on my book). Ugh. Plus, the exact words my dad said to me today dropping me off were "Make sure to actually interact with people!" Anyways, I DO want to have friends, but friends who actually get me, like you guys, who I can sit quietly with and read a book (when my friends from my old school come over, we can spend hours just quietly reading or doing a thousand-piece puzzle together without talking), or just be ridiculously silly with, but, at this school? Well... hopefully the book club will be different. And it'll probably get better overtime. However, the teachers are amazing, so that's great!! Sorry this turned into a rant, just needed to say that. (Btw, we got assigned books in English today, and there's this one book that I... might've accidentally maybe finished reading in between classes and during lunch tho we weren't supposed to start until maybe next year?? But it was SO GOOD and SO RELATABLE and pretty funny too!! It's called Quiet Girl in a Noisy World: An Introvert's Story, and I absolutely LOVED it!! So, anyone who might relate to this, or people who totally don't, read this!! Please!! Bc yess!!!! :D)

Sorry for the late reply! I'm at my grandma's house and the internet is really slow :/

Thank you so much, Peri! Your advice is really helpful, especially the club/sport suggestions! I think my school offers most of them (except maybe DnD/tabletop rpg games?), so I'm excited to try them out. :D

Wow, I'm kind of tearing up right now. You're also the first person I really interacted with on the CB when I was still pretty new and inexperienced, and I'll always remember Daydreams Cafe and how eager you were RP with me - it meant the world at the time (and still does). So thanks for that, and for being so thoughtful and supportive to everyone here. I've always admired your writing, too - it's amazing how you pour life into each of your characters. Your ski lodge, for instance, is incredible.

And thank you for all the music and show recommendations! I hadn't heard of Lyn Lapid, but her music is really good!

Thanks again for doing this, Peri! Love you platonically <333
