You're walking down the street, feeling sad. Everything's gone wrong today. The teacher at your new school scolded you for not handing in your homework; you feel like you're getting a flu; your mom and dad are away for the week, and your older sister is in charge of you. Worst of all, though, you have no friends.
The sound of laughter comes to your ears, and you look up. Just ahead is a group of girls you recognize from school, sitting at a picnic table. You slightly know one of them - isn't her name Periwinkle? She has shoulder-length brown hair, an attractive face, and deep blue eyes - almost periwinkle color -with a truly friendly expression. You've always wanted to get to know this girl better - but you've never had the courage.
Periwinkle looks up and sees you standing there alone, watching them.
"Hi!" she says, smiling. "Want to sit with us?"
There's nothing you'd like better, but you're too shy. "Um, I don't want to butt in..." you say.
"No, really!" Periwinkle says, patting the bench invitingly. "I'd like to get to know you better."
"Definitely," agrees one of the other girls.
Your heart feels lighter than it has for ages. Maybe these girls will prove to be real friends - not just people who hang out with you after school but don't really care about you.
"Thank you," you say, and sit down next to Periwinkle.
Additional (true) funny comment: Someone came in just now and asked what I was doing, and I said I was typing a written periwinkle for Picturing.... a silly slip of the tongue! :)
