I watch the couples and groups dancing in the ballroom, suddenly feeling very awkward. Nihil gazes around the room, not seeming to be feeling awkward in the least, so I stay silent. It's nice, anyway, not to have someone talking at all times, be it one of my siblings, or one of their friends, or someone else. That's why I enjoy the times at home when Alex and Vivian go off on an errand or to an event, and Apollo and Nyx are elsewhere, and I can enjoy a bit of peace and quiet reading or working.
It's interesting to see how the AEs and CAPTCHAs in the ballroom are all so similar, yet so remarkably unique. You have your enthusiastic extroverts, your reclusive introverts, and your mixed ambiverts, but everywhere I see introverts having sudden moments of talkative socializing, extroverts stuck by a sudden shyness, or ambiverts who are leaning far to one side or the other. And everyone in a different, unique way. It's incredible, really.
"What did you say?" asks Nihil. I hadn't realized I was whispering to myself out loud.
"Nothing," I murmur. "I was talking to myself.
Alex~
"Yeah, I'm Sally! I'm one of Dusk Sky's AEs, along with my sister. Isn't the ball amazing? Do you like rainbows and kittens? What's your CBer- oh wait, you already told me. Are you one of the energetic ones too, or one of the angsty shy people? But it doesn't matter, because we will be absolutely great friends!"
I grin. I was already excited, and finding out that I was right for once about who an AE is lights me up even more.
"Yeah, the ball is great!" I answer. "Isn't the food sooo good? Kittens are awesome, Vivian wants to get one but Niko won't hear it. I'm so one of the energetic ones! Niko's the angsty one, his only friend is Nihil, Porcelain Dragon's AE. Angsty sides with angsty, I guess. I think they're up there!" I point to the ledge where my brother and Nihil are sitting. "Isn't it weird that Niko's always dressed in almost all black? But I guess Apollo actually dressing in all black is even weirder. Hey, who is your sister? I can't remember. I actually don't remember anyone's names very easily."
Vivian~
I almost flinch as Lux tucks my hair behind my ear, the gesture is so surprising. I look up and realize he's blushing as well.
"You look amazing," he says, and I smile.
"Thanks," I murmur. My face is so hot, and it's starting to make me a little dizzy. There's a balconey nearby, where I could get a breath of the cool night air, but I don't want to leave and make Lux think that it got too awkward or anything.
Apollo~

Lux~
I look around for somewhere we could go to talk. I spy a balcony, and immediately I look to Vivian. "Hey, do you want to go to the balcony? I'd like to get some fresh air." Some tension leaves her shoulders and she nods.
Nihil~
"Mmm." I sit up and check for Lux. He and Vivian are slowly making their way through the crowd, heading for the balcony. I wonder what kind of things he's thinking right now - what he's feeling. It must feel amazing to be chosen out of everybody else in the universe.
"What's on your mind?" Niko's voice brings me out of my daze.
"Hmm? Oh. I was just wondering how Lux is feeling, you know, his crush liked him back and now they're finally able to be together." I unconsiously hug my knees so that they're at my chin and rest my head on them. "It's astounding, the chances. They both could've chosen anyone in the universe and yet they both chose each other. The statistics make it highly improbable - oh." I glance apologetically at Niko. "Sorry, I'm rambling."

Never thought I'd say this, but I'm getting tired. I grab Harper's arm, which immediately turns warm. I wonder why. "Hey, do you wanna go somewhere else? I bet we can find a room with some video games or something," I say as I let go of her skin and feel my hand. I look at her. Wow. I never noticed how pretty and deep her eyes are, emerald with gold flecks sprinkled about. Suddenly shipping comes to mind...

"Sorry, I'm rambling," she says. I wave a hand dismissively.
"It's fine," I assure her. "I've heard nerdy rants eight times worse than that from Nyx and Apollo." The corner of Nihil's mouth quirks up, and I smile slightly, falling silent again. At length I try to break the silence with an uncharictaristically awkward question: "So... do you have any hobbies? Or if not hobbies, than stuff you do a lot?"

I can feel my eyes sparkle. Niko makes me feel so welcome. I love this. "I really like animals, especially hedgehogs and ferrets." Niko giggles. "I mean they're just so - so ridiculous. Imagine what the people who discovered them thought - 'What kind of an animal is this little prickly pig-thing??' 'I dunno, but have you SEEN this floppy Slinky-shaped cat?'" Niko laughs harder and I start to giggle, too. It's an absurd thought, but a good one. "Also, I really like martial arts and music."
"That's cool!" Niko says. I smile at him.
"So what kind of things do you like?"

I turn spin around and see a cute fox and a dog. I think they're a couple. I ask them their names and the fox replies with "Vixen". Oh, I know who this is! It's Rigel and Vixen, from Dolphin's crew. Cool! Usually I would say bye and walk away, embarrassed, but I don't feel that scared anymore.
I catch him looking at my cookie. "Do you want one? They're AMAZING! I think a girl named Sally made them. She's an AE." I place two smiley face cookies in Vixen's paw before he replies. Wow. Where did that come from? I'm lost in my thoughts until Rigel says-

Stargirl puts two cookies into my paws. Rigel says, “I’ll take one of those,” and takes one out of my paw. He takes a bite, and his eyes grow wide. With a full mouth, he says, “fis if fery gofd” I translated. “innnn mouth fulin thatt means ‘thiss issss verry goood’ Rigel swallows and says “ I think Coral will like you. Should we call her and tell her that she should come?” I smack him “shutt uuppp!” She says...

I laugh at Nihil's description of ferrets. Sometime's the AE can be closed off, like when I first met her, but I like her. My face heats up and I make a mental revision to the thought: she's nice. Whew, I've never blushed that easily.
"So what kind of things do you like?" asks Nihil.
"Well..." I think for a moment. "I really like music too, and I really enjoy reading. I think I'm the only one of all my siblings who actually has books in their room, instead of just on the bookcase downstairs. I like andimals too, predatory cats and birds especially, and sometimes help Nyx with her writing, or she helps me with personal writing projects of mine."
"Cool." Nihil smiles again.
Vivian~
I follow Lux to the balconey and take a deep breath of fresh air. "Wow, that breeze feels good. It's really nice out tonight, isnt it?"
"Yeah."

I notice my hands are going cold. Quickly, I sit up straight and massage them, pins-and-needles firing all over my palms. I look over at Niko.
"I'm getting a little stiff, do you want to, oh, I don't know," I look down and my eyes rest on the dancing couples below. I blush a little more than I'd like. "Dance?"

Rigel and Vixen start talking about someone named Coral. "Shut uuup!" Vixen says to Rigel. I interject. "Who the hay is Coral?"

"I'm getting a little stiff, do you want to, of, I don't know..." Nihil looks down into the ballroom. "Dance?"
"What?" I ask, not entirely sure I heard her right.
"Dance! There's a good song playing." My face reddens, yet again. I smile though, and it's genuine despite the heat in my chest.
"Uh, sure." Nihil grabs my hand and flies us down to the dance floor, where a lively free dance is playing. I wince. I'm not as good a dancer as Apollo, and I've always felt more comfortable during a line dance, where no one will judge you for doing something weird. But Nihil starts dancing as if she doesn't have a care in the world, so I do my best, and slowly gain confidence as no one seems to be paying attention. Although I'm positive there's a nosy AE or two somewhere that's paying close attention to all the dancing couples on the floor.
My face flushes. There I go again! I think. Couples, couples, what's a better word...
"What's the matter?" Nihil asks. I look up and realize I've stopped dancing.
"Uh, nothing," I answer. Nice job, I say to myself. I continue dancing, half wondering why I keep blushing and feeling awkward, and half feeling that I know the reason and am not sure if I like it or not.

Niko's looking a bit stiff, but he's an amazing dancer. As for me, I'm just doing what feels right. I smile at him, when all of the sudden the music skips and becomes a slower dance, fitting for the box-waltz, or whatever it's called. The DJ, some unknown being, looks down at who couples with who, smiling like a person in-the-know. I shrug and, almost from instinct, I step close to Niko. Gently, I guide his hand around my ribs and I put my hand on his shoulder. Then, I realize what I just did, and how much we're both blushing right now. We sway and swirl gracefully, looking into each other's faces. An uncomfortable warmth makes itself known in my chest.
